My grandma made butter like this in a wooden butter churn. My mom often talks about it, and her moms chickens, and i know she misses watching her do this.

Of course, the newspaper advert shown was of a cream separater to get the cream from the milk in the first place. Its the resulting cream that is then used in the churn to create butter. Cheers 🇬🇧

No it doesnt. The process is very similar to yogurt, in that they are using the lacto bacteria to make a good taste. Its hard to imagine how anybody decided to do this the first time, but it works. I think Wikipedia has an article on Making European style butter, or Making Irish butter. Theres alot more information worth reading about this subject.

The milk doesn't spoil because the lacto bacteria from the yogurt out competes whatever other bacteria that might spoil the milk. But I don't understand the process in this video, because I don't think anything was added in it. Just plain curiosity here. Online search results usually link me to modern day butter making, but very little on how it was done (detail) in the past.

That buttermilk is quite excellent added to bread preparation as well as quick breads and pancakes. I have a very good recipe for pound cake that uses buttermilk.
Reminds me of my dear cousin Elspeth back in 1776 when she'd make some of the tastiest butter ever. I'd bring in the buttermilk, cousin Jebediah would do all the heavy lifting, and we'd make a day of it. Such fun!

Butter is getting expensive ! I saw a video from cooking a chicken in 1800, and it sounds great you boil a whole chicken in butter and it sounds good, because the butter with soak all the way into the bones.
