- I decided to have a go at making a spring swage for making acorns on the power hammer. Turned out pretty good if i say so myself!

While it was in the lathe, you should’ve ran a knurler on the cap of the acorn to give it some texture. It would’ve transferred just enough into the tool to give it a little bit of character.

Can you talk about your leg vise? I saw it in the background and have been trying to work out the best way to mount mine. I want it to be somewhat portable and seems you might have cracked that nut. Would you mount your vise the same way again? Does it move around on you, if you were twisting or pulling? Hammering I assume it is good, but does it bounce?

Unfortunately it’s not portable, it’s bolted to a cast iron bench which it was designed for, and is bolted to the floor. So no, it doesn’t bounce and you can twist and pull easily.
That was neat. Do you need to relieve the edges of the die a bit so it wont chew so much? or would it be better to make a "rough draft" version of the die to neck it down closer to near the size of the acorn first?

Yes, as I mention in the video I took off the rough edges with my Dremel. Shoulder is doing great thanks!👍🏻
@@garyhustonAnother great choice for the die set is S5 or S7. Shock steel. Jackhammer bit. Fully anneal and heat to about 1,400"f and try to work fast enough so that you don't have to anneal and go again. Remember that all your efforts will smooth out after using it about fifty times to work out the transitions. Then you can do a full heat treatment at 1700"f, soak five minutes, oil quenching. Do twice then draw back 450"f in a toaster oven for an hour for stress relief. Works with D2 Tool steel also. It's some gnarly stuff to forge
How long will it last?
I have no idea i've never made one before, but judging by other spring swages I've seen used in the past, a long time! Then you simply use the master to make another!
