Poor Jim lol. I can't imagine how hard it was keeping this all together. I love Cedric. I do. The work and rehearsal time from those that did it the most shows. I still love them, hell they saved me in 2001. Literally. I didn't realize that when I discovered them in 1999 that they were already in trouble. A ton of pressure and raw material made the Diamond that is Relationship Of Command.
Just watching this, that pressure certainly does take a toll doesn't it.
They have to be one of the most underrated bands in history. I know they weren't driven by commercial success but neither are bands like Radiohead and they're massive. Musical geniuses the lot of em. To blend chords like they do so discordantly but sound so epic is so difficult to pull off but they do it effortlessly. Relationship of Command is one of the best LPs ever released in my opinion
Don't agree with your part about being underrated. RoC is widely regarded as one of the best albums of the 00's and the influence that album then had on rock/metal/hardcore/punk is vast. They were very much rated.
Relationship of command is the best alternative rock albums of the world
relationship of command is one of the outstanding rock albums of the 21st century
Tony and Paul holding this whole thing together. Incredible
what about jim? he always plays properly and doesn't jump everywhere like omar... bro gets nowhere near enough credit
Jim too tf lol
Sparta was holding this together musically. The Mars Volta just made it totally unique.
Yeah you can hear Jim play Air just after minutes
Jim is the man although he isn't the performer the afros are he holds it down
Love 59:55 when he just starts singing the lyrics to 'That joke isn't funny anymore' by The Smiths.
The steam coming off Tony. Shows how draining having 2 spotlights on you a entire show.
Invalid Litter Department is such an amazing song
I like that they told the audience not to slam dance or mosh. First off, look at the room and all the people packed tight in there. Shit can get dangerous. Easily!! In the case of a pit, It wouldn't be hard for someone to fall down, get trampled on, crushed, etc. Just trying to breath would be hard enough. I respect the fact that they took that initiative to tell the audience to not do that. They are an "equal opportunity band". They want the experience for everybody to be fun. They wanted everyone to look out for each other. And more importantly, safe! That's love and respect for their fans. Pure class. Think of how many instances they had where they had fans get injured due to crazy audiences. Yes, their music is crazy. Off the cuff. But it shouldn't warrant anyone to just go nuts inside the crowd. Not everyone is there to go crazy. Some people bought a ticket just to watch and hear the band. ATDI were only looking out for their fans. That doesn't make them "pussies". And if you think it does, then you're a idiot that has no consideration for the safety of a crowd.
By the way, The Mars Volta couldn't hold a candle to these, even with a similar line up. Just shows that ATDI were fully collaborative3
Thank you to my daughter, Nat for somehow just knowing that I'd love this band. Shame I didn't have a clue 20 years ago when they first came out. Mindblowing.
It's kind of hard not to mosh when your music is dirty as fuck.
I was there. Christ, this makes me feel old. I was 18 then....I'll be 30 this year...and I still listen to them nearly every day.
You just have a great musical taste ... DON'T STOP IT
Going on 40 now? 😎
@@kodyryan1628 ha, 39 this year! And weirdly enough, for the first time in ages I was just watching old ATDI live videos last night, and then this morning I saw your comment!
@@pejpm that’s crazy man! Welcome back😂 i wonder if i’ll ever find a comment of mine in 10 years.. maybe im not even alive in 10 years scary stuff
Hope you made it to 40👍
I was at this gig and it was glorious. The medium of video does not do justice to how awe inspiring they were live.
Thank you for posting, its nice to be reminded how great moments, if captured, can live forever!
I was there too, and just discovered this vid. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
I was at this gig, aged 15.
me too but i wasn't 15, that night outside was freezing
Why are you guys bragging so much, you lucky bastards...? I consider this, one
of the greatest live performances of all time, which could easily place this,
within my top 100 catalog...
I so wish, that I was at this performance, that I'd probably give up
just about anything, to be there...
Okay, Yo ...STRAIGHT JEALOUS
I was at the Manchester gig on the same tour, same age. I'm nearly 40 now but the impact they had on me will never, ever fade. Absolutely transformative band
hahaha "were going to do up and down, and were going to do it all night until you're tired"
Cedric and Jim singing That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore together just sounds so great and gives me the feels for some reason.
prob the whole "they had a creative connection between each other and slowly lost it over time and split into 2 bands" thing
i go to a show for the music, not for the pits. obviously i love the pits but fuck it, if the artist plays better music when they aren't focused on the crowd beating the shit out of each other, who cares? if they don't want you moshing, find some local noise band to bump up against
I feel fortunate I got to see these guys in 2003 as mars volta but damn, I wish I could have seen them in the early days as ATDI!!!!
That was a crazy tour. For their first album right?
@@RustinChole yes
That first album tour was my favorite
Classic Omar moment at 27:28
Man I went to a technical death metal show back in April and the pits were intense. Women and smaller guys were not excluded. My 13 year old daughter, all 5 feet 100 pounds of her was storming the pit. Good natured recreational violence when done right is for everybody (except me cuz my legs got fucked up in a car accident and my balance isn't good enough for the pit)
I completely disagree. Sparta has always lacked the energy of ATDI. On the other hand, The Volta has put out some decent records (hell, De-Loused is one of my all-time favorites), but has gotten shittier and shittier live as time has gone on. I've heard that their recent tour was a return to form, though.
ATDI was incredible live, though.
Fuck! I'd never seen this. I was at this gig, front row. Memories!
dude they are so high lol
So glad I got to see these guys in their prime in this era. The new shit is tough to compare.
Very lucky indeed.
The new album just kinda sounds like a less potent Mars Volta album but with Tony and Paul.
These guys were high as fuck
This gig made me start a band!
This band can make you push some limits as a guitar player, they have influenced me incredibly.
@@dyr234 this band makes you have to groove all around. I’m trying to record a cover of lopsided but I’m not promoting it... it’s difficult! Every instrument grooves so much especially on in/Casino/out.
@@cuteasxtreme the songs groove harder on relationship of command with songs like arc arsenal, enfilade and one armed scissor.
@@dyr234 I love the songs on RoC dont get me wrong, but the sound of the album is like a brick wall to me. I find In/casino to be an easier listen
@@cuteasxtreme I find relationship of command to be a fucking monument, its so creative and yet so out of the box while still maintaining that punk alternative rock agression. Omar has so many creative parts he did on that record, not that he didn't in the other records, because he did, its just relationship of command to me was at his top level. To put a song together like arc arsenal is fucking incredible, so short yet so artisitically open with a fantastic attack like mc5 meets hundred reasons.
" No slam dancing !!"
I like how you see the band breaking out at the edges and somehow keeping it together, This is really big stuff.
Why the fuck i born in 99!? Why!?
ajajaj, yo el 94 alcance a ver a las bandas del 2006, 2007, 2008
Anyone else think Cedric sounds like Zach de la Rocha
if it was me i would be happy for people to mosh as long as nobody dies or gets seriously injured but if you are at a gig and the band are telling you to not mosh you should respect them because it is their gig
'Echale semilla a esa maraca pa que suene' I love how Cedric and Omar put all this latin music references in all of their music, that influence just gives an amazing feeling to what they do!
Look for Cheo Feliciano El raton, and you'll see :D
SO MUCH BETTER than Coachella, this is what a fucking vocalist does, blows the fucking shit out of their voice!
11:28
A wild Cedric appears!
You can totally see that Omar and Cedric's will to aim for other lenghts
Oh holy shit, look at that hair. LOOK AT THAT BEAUTIFUL HAIR.
Those mic skills tho....EPIC
It's really sad that relationship command was supposed to be the best record of the year 2000 and they blew it with their drug use and infighting. Then would have been great to see these guys during this time. I never saw them when they reunited without Jim. I just wouldn't have been the same tickets to see them in 2000 and they disbanded.
No Jim for me? Then I’m not going. If Sparta re unites I WILL see them check out their live performances of Assemble the Empire it’s like Mars Volta Light but HARDER and immediately to the point and doesn’t let u go til the songs over. Cannot believe I missed out on a live Sparta Jim ward show.
also, not being dependent on herion probably has a lot to do with it being cleaner
Their energy, attitude, and badassnes is just not comparable. Got DAMN they BLOW MINDS!!!
Thanks for posting this - I was at this gig. It was excellent but not as good as their show at the Reading Festival earlier that year which remains to this day the best live performance I've ever seen.
If I remember rightly, I went to see And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead at ULU the day after this show - Happy days!
Why the fuck aren't there more bands like this now? What the hell?
ha ha because the media and record companies have predetermined what is to be popular today, sweaters, intricate haircuts and soft floaty pop rock are the order.
droctagon3k The media did the same thing back when ATDI came out, record companies seek to sell what is selling, it takes somebody to notice somebody else who is doing their own thing, lucky for us, Sonic Youth took notice of ATDI and encouraged others to take notice.
+droctagon3k Implying it hasn't always been like that. There are bands like that around you'd just rather bitch about "real music" not being popular because you're too lazy to bother looking for music yourself.
woobiehastelly i remember times when mtv showed lesser bands and alternative music but now theres the same fucking syntesized beat in ewery song ewery dude got the same beard theres no soul theres just money ..remember the time When mtv showed good bands and beavis and butt head but now theres just some fkn teen agers who get fkn bregnant and that suppose to be cool ?? Wtf!!
Not many band like that then
Fucking obscenely good.
my favourite band until i die
Coke is a hell of a drug
Cedric and Omar were on some good shit
Mannn, Enfilade with Cedric playing the guitar was FANTASTIC
22:18 seeing Cedric with a guitar is so odd looking to me. Rolodex Propaganda is one of my favorite songs
It's so weird seeing him sit still while singing for more than two seconds.
lmao at cedric at 8:18. he sticks a broken drumstick up his nose (after failing the first time) and proceeds to slam it onto the stage as they go into the prechorus. i can't stop laughing. this is comedic gold!!!
Woah that's cool, I never knew they played this venue.
Nobody looks cooler in the post-modern era with an electric guitar than Omar Rodriguez-Lopez during his tenure with AtDI
Oh wow I haven't seen this since I downloaded it off the web like 12 years ago. You know how long that shit took?! Looks like the same copy.
Damn they look sick! I can't wait to see them this November!
At 5:45 is Jim playing Air? Holy shit.
Damn ... Punk AF. Look at that crowd. The BEST.
I was there. I bought a ticket off a tout. The best £50 I ever spent.
Yeah I have no fucking idea why that came up, they put a copyright claim on the video as well and I had to dispute it. I won the dispute but I see it still says DJ Cam is the artist. I'll try and get rid of it.
remember -- this was during their tour in which they played a festival in Australia. They only played 3 songs during their set because the audience was too violent. Four people died during that festival. Now, go figure why they would try and control the violence in the audience for the remainder of the tour.
I was 16 when this concert happened and I would have given 2 left nuts to see it!
Bombastic Bill You could have just said 2 nuts. 2 left nuts makes exatcly zero sense unless you're stealing another mans lefty
It is a little bit dickish but Cedric just really didn't like mosh pits or any of that stuff because he knew people got the shit beat out of them and people die in mosh pits. And if you are a smaller person and there is a mosh pit you can get hurt pretty bad. The thing is they just aren't very safe.
I had an insanely difficult time getting in to this show but near the end of their set the nicest security-dude EVER let us in the back door, straight to the side of the stage. It was fantastic.
Cool, but side to side is a much better experience. Have fun. Don't hurt anyone! Why not?
just shows you how boring music has become that this is actually considered 'good' by some people. The worst amatuer tasteless crap, don your afro and churn out the crap people.
He's just following in the footsteps of Ian Mackaye and Guy Picciotto...:)
Arcarsenal
Pattern Against User
Cosmonaut
Lopsided
Rolodex Propaganda
Rascuache
Invalid Litter Dept.
One Armed Scissor
Enfilade
Quarantined
Catacombs
Napoleon Solo
with some other parts of songs in there
How they were able to make this all work while being on the verge of complete collapse is astonishing. You just had to fucking be there cause they were never able to capture this again.
Hey Cedric! What about all the short kids in the back, who can't see because everyone in front is jumping around like a bunch of fools?
Despues de #Nirvana existe #AtTheDriveIn --> Terrible poder de esta banda!!!
i used to talk shit about At the Drive In because they were better musicianly than me but then again i only know three chords.
seriously? well that's your opinion i guess man, i respect that.. but just watching this video they rocked my fucking socks off
Sparta - Air at 5:43 ?
holy shit!
And you can hear Mars Volts style jam in the middle of a song around 52:45
Totally.
Ha, some of that playing is insufferable and off key, but it looks like the show was a lot of fun.
It seems like an arrogant thing to say, I know, but when I hear him say basically "don't mosh or I'll hit you with my mic and I don't care if you sue me" it sounds kind of dickish. Still love the guy though.
They're only telling people how to dance because they don't want people to get hurt in moshpits.
I was five months old during this show. Still pissed I never got to see them.
No one's given a shout out to Gabe from Murder City Devils running cables at the beginning.
That's your problem and not theirs. It's painfully evident that you're wrong!
oh my fucking god! im so pumped for coachella. i never thought that i would ever see them reunite. i hope cedric gets all crazy like this.
How was it haha
i think the same....i think these guys are awesome....but not this......
Really? You don't hear "Pattern Against User" first? Really?
Wormed our way through distant earth.
wtf im listening... DJ Cam? seriosly, why youtube, why
He's using the vocoder, chorus, and pitch=shifting effects that come with a lot of small synths like the one he used in the last original ATDI shows
I think they had to say that because people were dying at their shows.
Why don't they just tell everyone that if you don't want to take the risk don't be near the front / middle
yeah you should be in the back if you don't want to get kicked in the face... fucking moron
or you should be at your taylor swift concert, and I'm sorry if you ever have to leave your safe space, nothing else should exist in the world. just for you
the band members themselves say "no slam dancing", and you tell me to go to a Taylor Swift.. ok then.
The band went downhill from there. Nowadays they don't say that anymore. They realized that saying that was dumb, and that they are a hardcore band, and you shouldn't have to mess up the experience of hardcore fans so that less hardcore fans can be close to the stage at a hardcore show.
9:38 epic
interlude at 6:15 ish .........
that afro
Cedrics vocals are mixed way too high.
I hate the pit but their music was wild as shit...
Did they go to Franklin High Skool?
sounds like shit but yes legendary
@Tonyfaster Now you can, as they're back together!
What a great fucking racket
Haha, dude, that's disturbing.
No other band moves so frenetic! Love it.
This shit is sucker free!
cedris's got the best frontman moves
terrible set list
@faguilerar Cha ku cha kuchu ku cha ku cha!
rolodex propaganda
