  • The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is almost 5 years old now, but can you still use it in the year 2023? The answer is yes. The BlackBerry KEY2 is running Android 8.1 and has not received an update in several years, but most apps still work for it and the keyboard is still top notch as long as the phone is well taken care of. The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is the flagship BlackBerry Mobile device and one of the last remaining remnants of a physical keybaod phone to use in 2023. Sadly they KEY2 doesn't have 5G support and will only work for a few more years until 4G is eventually shut down.

I'm still using my key2LE. MOST apps still work but I'm noticing that some are becoming incompatible. They tell you that you have to update, then the play store won't let you update. The phone is so well built that it's out living all its software. Its frustrating how we are forced to keep upgrading phones when new ones really aren't better or even offer what older ones do.

I wish they would do another phone just like this and just up the CPU and RAM. its been my daily since it came out and i've been through a couple of them. So so good and fast for typing with, those that are all touch screens will never understand. I really hope they can come up with something to keep this going be it either outsourcing or crowdfunding related (for reference, i did try the unihertz but it just wasnt the same and the camera on the unihertz was awfull for snapchat + similar apps)

The biggest mistake I think BB made was to partner with Android and not continue to develop their own secure OS. There's more demand for software and security now than ever and many consumers would love a phone that's not android or apple to run the latest apps.

Yeah, I feel you. I miss my old Torch 9810.... Just wished Onward Mobility actually did something... It 'COULD' have been great if BB gave the contract to Unihertz, THEN, maybe they could have changed the physical keyboard to the proper BB layout, multiple years OS support and stuff like that...
I've also contacted another great physical keyboard phone manufacturer of old - Nokia, to try and persuade them into making a physical QWERTY keyboard phone like the old E63/E71 (they were great phones) as, my complaint with HMD/Nokia is that they're releasing these 'Classics' like 3310, 8110, 8210, 2720 flip, 8000 4G, 6310 etc etc, but, some of them run KaiOS (and so can run WhatsApp/Signal etc), but, WHO THE F, is gonna want to type texts/ instant messages/emails out on an ancient T9 alpha/Numeric keypad system?? ESPECIALLY, when STILL TO THIS DAY, one of the TOP THREE uses for phone is texting/messaging/emailing??? Planet Computers with their 'Astro Slide 5G' is another potentially useful phone (though eerily similar to the old (but also at the time great) Nokia E7... In my view, and from what I've researched, physical QWERTY keyboard phones CAN STILL have a place in the phone industry.... I mean Christ... I'd LOVE to buy a modern updated Torch 9810!!! or even a Passport! 😎🇬🇧

@@TechOdyssey Very Durable devices. I had my BlackBerry classic go flying out of the "cell phone pocket" down in the leg of my pants, when I was running to catch a light rail train. I didn't even know it was missing until it was too late, but a girl found it and contacted me. I got it back from her and it was just fine. The screen was not broken and the keyboard was not damaged. All it had were a few insignificant dings on the frame. Even after I got a Keyone and Key2, I still used the Classic sometimes, up until they cut off 3g and it didn't work anymore. I still have it, but I can't use it anymore cuz of 3g. The BB Bold series, which the Classic was modeled after, were probably the best built, sturdiest phones ever made. They also had the best call quality. BB Bold 9000 had the best call quality of any cell phone, ever. It sounded like a landline. The built in stereo speakers also sounded exceptionally good for phone speakers.

I'm using the KeyOne Black Edition, it's still fully usable in 2023 and I use social media apps on it, what isn't useable as much is BlackBerry Hub as that integration with Gmail died a few months ago and I only noticed when I changed my email password and couldn't get it back into my blackberry hub. I was using the Classic until February when things started going wrong, the keyboard wouldn't work replying to texts but was fine with emails and notes then the network connectivity dropped and never came back so I replaced it with an iPhone 7 because it was cheaper than replacing it with a Priv and I wanted a similar sized phone for when I'm outside, I do have a tendency to drop things and I do not want to have to replace the KeyOne there is very little in Europe with QWERTY keyboard and buying from the UK will make it very expensive with import fees.

@@ColinsCity I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a key2/LE for a while now but they are so rare overhere (Netherlands) I've never even seen one irl. My classic had to come special order from UK back in 2015 bc by then already nobody sold BB's anymore. That was a risk I was willing to take bc that was a new phone with reasonable specs for it's price then, but dropping so much cash for an obsolete/eol device I've never held in my hands makes me hesitant even when I know BB build quality (my 9700bold also survived way longer then a smartphone should).
Fun thing of using a classic in 2023 is people either go 'hurrdurr crackberry' or they think I'm some hardcore criminal bc of some publicity round encrypted BB's a few years back :D

I just rebuilt my key2 le. Running like brand new and the outter shell is mint. :) my screen busted in 2021 and I let it sit.. I found an entirely brand new casing with wiring, screen and internal components minus motherboard.
It cost me 100 bucks.... Versus the msrp of the titan slim... i cant do it... the cost and the look is hideous.. Eventually, i will have to upgrade, but that day is not TODAY. :)

ALSO...

Now it has dawned upon me that I need a suitable backup phone if I want to extend my Key 2 for a few more years. The only phone I see that comes close to being a backup is the Unihertz Titan Slim with the Blackberry launcher and Hub installed. Now going to have to drop several more hundred for that!
