The big trick with this challenge is to throw the shuriken into a 1500 point box, then cast Windstorm on that same box. It will explode and deal massive AOE damage to the boxes around it. Also, retrieving the shuriken causes Yuffie to fly into the targeted box, dealing big damage. I can't help make the camera any easier to contend with, so that will be your biggest learning curve. String both these tips together and you'll finish this challenge with plenty of time to spare!

COMMON FAQ - Where'd that time box come from?!
At 2:10, I get a time box in the distance. It's not intentional, my shuriken flew off into the distance and ended up breaking a stack of boxes. The boxes are blocking the cubby you see at 2:32. Additionally, I hit a time box at 2:28 - same thing happened - my shuriken flew off and hit a box I wasn't even close to targeting. That time box is normally on top of a stack you'd see at 2:44.
I'm not getting any secret time boxes or anything that you can't get on your own. They just got broken out of order, unintentionally. Yuffie's targeting is on drugs.
I don't get any time box behind the big stack at 2:45! Is it possible?!
Make sure you do not have your shuriken out at that time. You want to do a windstorm without targeting anything in particular.@@DavideBattisti

So for this section, what you have to do is point the camera at a box, point Yuffie at it, see the target highlight the box you want to hit and oh no Yuffie's decided to target something off screen about 20 metres away

@Tanjiro That is exactly how I beat it and I wouldn't be surprised at all if I played it over 100 times like you said too. This one mini-game has the ability to ruin the entire dlc experience it's that awful to me.
The targeting machanism is what makes this challenge most challenging in this game.

@@metalcactuarjumpman7605 This video + Parry + equip skill master and ninja canonball material. Ninja canonball will destrow both purple and orange regardless and all you need is to alternate your abilities to trigger the skill master. Parry will cancel faster any movement.

To anyone coming to this a year and a half late, just spam Triangle/Y nonstop and do the throw+Windstorm combo for white boxes when available, especially on the ones you can only hit at range. Throw+Windstorm on the middle box for the ones in a big clock formation, hits all of em and only takes one more throw on each to break. Beat it with ~15s to spare.

@@Jibb_Buttkiss Practice more I guess? You'll have to know where every box is and figure out a good route to them, the teleport from hitting y/triangle after a throw helps but avoiding backtracking is still ideal. Also, there's one box that's just evil, there's a part where you turn a corner I think left to continue but you need to go around a corner to the right instead to find it. I don't remember if the minigame normalizes your damage but if not, try coming back to it after a few levels or with a stronger weapon.

I couldn't agree more - there are plenty of games that manage, FF7R really has no excuse - basically just put a pointer in the middle of the screen and use that to determine what's being targetted - not only is that easier programmatically, it's MUCH more user friendly - so they've made everyone's lives more difficult lol
This challenge was harder than it needed to be and I literally spent a good 2 hours trying to get this done. Now I got a headache but I finally did it, all for that Exp Materia baby.

I got a nosebleed immediately after defeating Bahamaut with Cloud Tifa and Barret slightly underleveled on Normal. My first play through and i didnt want to backtrack. Every guide I saw said I wanted to have Aerith. But once I figured out how broken Tifa is, it was actually easy but I spent so much time on the boss leading to that point my brain was fried 😭

Little precision that I just noticed : in order to get the hidden time boxes in the 2nd big area, you need to use NORMAL windstorm, not the enhanced one that triggers when the shuriken is attached to a box.
The trick is that normal windstorm is weaker but wider, which allows you to get past the wall to break time boxes on the side. Enhanced windstorm is way smaller so you usually can't these boxes with it.

This was SUPER helpful, the major problem for me? Sometimes those hidden time boxes just aren't there. sometimes I break those boxes and get like 20 seconds...and sometimes I clear the whole area and don't get a single extra second.
Yuffie's broken targeting and the lack of time box consistency makes this the single most difficult challenge for me, even more so than the box challenges I did with Cloud.
Quite literally the worst FF mini game ever made, if for no other reason than the horrendously glitchy targeting system. Absolutely terrible.

At 2:49, your Windstorm attack activates where your shuriken is at so if you throw the shuriken first and then use Windstorm, it produces a bigger and stronger Area-of-effect attack and takes out all of these boxes with the single Windstorm. This was definitely a useful guide, and was able to complete this with about 20 seconds to spare. The biggest hurdle really is dealing with the damn targeting system but I had to practice each room til it becomes memory.
Just a heads up, that giant stack of boxes doesn't have a ton of extra time boxes, you're actually destroying a stack with box on top of it through the wall in the final zone, that's where some of the extra time comes from. Video was great though, helped me get it.

Some advice for something that took me a while to realize (sorry if I’d just skipped over it in the video), it’s not enough to turn the the camera to aim, yuffie needs to be pointed at the target too. In fact I think this is more important, once I figured out how to aim properly I did it in 2-3 tries. Only other advice is don’t over spam the throw in rooms with the magic boxes because sometimes you hit your target right away and you don’t want the shuriken coming back
What I did:
Spam Triangle for orange and purple boxes
1 air dashes for orange boxes
2 air dashes for purple boxes
Saves you a lot of time instead of doing combos on these smaller boxes.
Everything else, just do what he does for the big boxes.

Great guide!! Late to the party, but I have a few insights I’m not sure I saw, sorry if I’m redundant:
1. parry materia really helps with zippier movement
2. Using the menu (X) to slow time allows you to patiently and calmly select your next box target
3. Double triangle (PS5) is the quickest way to move between groups of boxes, and 5 sets in a row is the best way to break single 1500 boxes without ATB and which Yuffie can reach; pair with using menu to slow time to keep the weapon or Yuffie from flying off and try not to hit an extra triangle
4. It’s definitely stated, but I would emphatically agree, especially for purple boxes: get used to cancelling actions after throwing to keep Yuffie grounded and in ranged elemental mode
5. This will likely take you many many attempts to learn the path
I want to make this comment for people like me who watched this guide but still seem to struggle due to her quirky targeting system and this is why: Even though something may be targetted, Yuffie will always throw her shuriken at whatever SHE HERSELF is facing unless you're fully Locked On. For example, at the start of the run, all you have to do is turn Yuffie to the right and you can throw the shuriken, you don't need to turn the camera.
Also, ROLLING IS SUPER IMPORTANT since it summons your shuriken back to you. I tried it for 2 hours with this guide, then just said "fuck it, I'm going to roll after almost every box kill" and then I got it in 2 tries. Basically the pattern is: look at box -> throw shuriken -> do action until box is dead -> roll -> look at next box -> throw shuriken -> do action -> roll, etc. Also that Banishment near the end that clears those six or seven 1500 boxes is really important; without that it's an extremely tight run.
It’s honestly just better to always use the enhanced windstorm instead of an art of war. The animation is quicker and does bigger aoe anyway

Finally did this. This guide really helped. I forgot to do the level 3 Banishment. Still pulled it off.
Of course, my Yuffie and Sonon are already max level, so the Exp Up Materia is totally useless. But, I got my Trophy, and can not just play the game leisurely.
This was one of the most frustrating thing in gaming, ever. And it was all because of the stupid targeting -.-
You are da man. Is still took me some tries. I realised that Yufi’s targeting depends on her movement rather then camera - so one need to move toward the boxes one wants to aim at. Playing on PC I switched to M&K - a bit clunky but found it much easier to turn around quickly.
Thanks! I kept getting sooo close but running out of boxes, started to think it was impossible. I was completely missing the tucked away boxes at the very start and that one tucked away big box in the middle. That made the difference
I swear, some of the 100 boxes act like they're glitched because they just don't break even after I beat the shit out of them.
Some things that could fix this mini-game: Add a damn retry, not that difficult. Fix the stupid targeting system ~ it's god-awful and I don't want to see it in future titles. Make the score requirement 48000 or something. No point making something unbearable for some players and then slapping a bronze trophy behind it.

Yo, the windstorm knowledge helped a ton. I wasn't understanding the different forms of it and peaked at like 46k. 100% made it easier when you know which windstorm is which

Somehow managed to clutch this with 20 seconds left out of nowhere. I think the trick is to not let the timer pressure you into button spamming. Taking a little bit of time locking and swapping targets can really speed things up in the end. For example letting the shuriken drill into white boxes while you ninjutsu down purple ones. Also Cactuar Caper is nice for that too, since it counts as a throw, but it's AoE.
I just realized that that hitting the orange boxes with physical attacks are effective, whereas spells are effective against purple boxes, as indicated by the sword and wand icon plastered on them.

This is by far the most frustrating trophy I've ever gotten in a Final Fantasy game. Yuffie just did not seem to hit the boxes I wanted her to, and it ultimately felt like I just got lucky on my winning attempt. Your guide was invaluable.
Holy crap. After about 45 min straight of trying to beat this S.O.B. I finally did it with about 5 seconds to spare. Biggest thing to remember is to press Triangle at the silver boxes to keep your shuriken spinning on them and use windstorm to destroy them quickly. Also equip the steel reaper with power wrist guards. Good luck!

You can do it, but not like in this video. You have to return to those boxes in the corner, I managed to do it with like 0.5sec to spare, because they patched it! Nuts

I was using deadly dodge materia to attack the purple boxes.
My tips for completing it was this.
1.Have Deadly Dodge and Parry Materia. Parry Matreia allows Yuffie to do bigger dodges making her go just slightly faster, and the attack out of deadly dodge destroys orange blocks in a quick two hit.
2. Don't even bother with ninjutsu for the purple boxes, the purple boxes break in two throws and retrieve attacks (the oranges break in one).
3. If the lock-on hits the red box on top of a couple of orange ones and comes back, or you only break the top purple box instead of both the top and bottom one, don't throw it again, just deadly dodge attack.
4. Always destroy white boxes by using the shiruken-enhanced windstorm to weaken or destroy all those around them, if the enhanced windstorm doesn't break every box there, hit the leftover box with either a throw and retrieve or a deadly dodge attack and it should will destroy it.
Thanks a lot; the windstorm tip does help a lot, although it would’ve helped to clarify that it doing it on her shuriken seems to replace the normal large AOE around Yuffie’s body. It also helped me to figure out that just repeatedly throwing the retrieving breaks the big boxes faster than just whaling on them with Yufee’s melee attacks; and there are a couple parts where using her magic wave attack (hold down attack while her shuriken is thrown) can quickly break a bunch of little boxes at once, if you aim it right.
This was a big help. At the start, I hadn't yet found the time box off to the right. That sealed it for me. I did it a lot like you did but I used windstorm on all the big boxes.
For everyone struggling with the target lock, don't bother aiming with the camera. Instead, turn Yuffie to face the direction you want her to throw the shuriken. For example, at the start, if you hold right on your left stick and spam triangle, she will go to the hidden boxes immediately. Once you start to know the layout better you barely need to use the camera at all, though be careful what you have line of sight to because if you throw too early and you can't see the box you want to hit, you'll go to another one or just randomly across the room.

That windstorm tip is the game changer. For the life of me I couldn’t understand how to destroy them efficiently.
My route was a little different. I used Wind Storm for most of the boxes. As needed, I built up my ATB gauge by spamming attack twice and dodging to reduce recovery time. For the 100 point boxes, I targeted them to instantly break them. For the 200 point boxes, I just attacked them after throwing my shuriken, in which I used dodge rolls to approach them faster. Then I finished off the last box with a banishment. I also did take advantage of breaking boxes behind the wall, as well.
FINALLY got it this morning. This challenge was pissing me off so much. I kept comparing myself to where you were at the same point and wondering how the hell you had so much more time than me at certain parts. Just beat it with 1.5 seconds remaining because even though I finally managed to make it to the final room and do Banishment 3 on the group of 1500 boxes at the same time you did, I somehow screwed up on that 1500 box behind the moving barriers. I must've missed my throw and not noticed it, casting Banishment I, which missed... but thank God I had another ATB left so I threw again, landed it, used Banishment I, and just got to 50000.
I hate this challenge and never want to see it again.

Literally did both Cloud box smash challenges on my first try. I hate the targeting system in this game. Looking right at a box and she throws her weapon at one off camera.
Finally got it. Though not with seconds to spare, literally last second.
An additional tip, it helped me at least. On the big pile combining red/blue, I also use windstorm but I follow up with throwing it out, rolling then attacking with deadly dodge equiped.

Windstorm is always a better idea than art of war, just make sure you throw her weapon at it first. The animation is faster and you don't have to be near the block to use it. It works off of where the weapon is.
After some weird targeting and rotation struggling, I finally finished with 13 seconds left. Thanks for this video, man.
After I finally got the hang of it, I got so close but my final banishment came out right after the buzzer. My second full attempt after that got me a clear with only 3 seconds to spare. 😅

At the very last box of this guide, I would recommend to just use a windstorm when the shuriken is on the box. Using level 1 banishment costed me to fail it a few times when I was stressing about lack of time in a pinch, since it does really low damage.

Thanks for the help! Made it much easier! One important note… there are no time boxes hidden behind the other boxes at 2:42. It’s on the other side of the wall, and it’s only 1 of them. It’s very difficult to position the windstorm just right there.

I’m not getting anything behind that wall unless they beefed this up and without that extra 20 seconds it’s impossible literally I tried 50 times I’ve platinumed like 20 games so far and I just started a few months ago so I know it’s not my skill I just don’t get them boxes he does. They're hidden and wonky asf, I think they're below ground. You have to target the bottom box at least two boxes in or something for the ability to reach those boxes.
Actually, rather, you need to go into the area as far as he does in the video before using windstorm
@@ericforsyth they’re on the other side of the wall. The side that you use banishment on. If you use wind storm on your shuriken’s target it does more damage but if you use it while it’s attached to you it has a bigger radius.

Edit: it's the time box on the other side that gets blown up. I was finally able to finish this.

I don't think you notice it as you don't mention it in the video, but at around 2:09 you throw your shuriken off screen and hit a time box that isn't shown anywhere that you can see.
You're not the first person to mention this, and I hate to say it, but I have no earthly idea where that time box is. Sometimes I hit it, sometimes I don't. I just did this challenge for someone last week and couldn't find it. It's annoying because if Photo Mode was allowed during this challenge, I could find it easy.

one tip i have for people struggling is if you miss a few towards the end areas, dont fixate on them and just go onwards first. there are alot of time boxes at the final area so once u clear the final area there should be enough time for u to get back for those u missed
took me 2 hours, after 1 hr i found your video... 15 minutes later i got to 48500 and the last banish was blocked lol so i used windstorm and had 4 seconds to spare! Thanks man

Its behind the wall around the corner I think past the big group of 1500s. I never get the time boost there either

Alright I still haven't succeeded, however I found out the missing crate have been moved to the final zone instead of being left where they were behind the big stash of mixed boxes. So there's the same amount of time but dispatched in a more difficult way :(
The weird thing is I was getting time boxes but now I’m not and I’m not sure what happened. I’m not doing anything different.
Did they patch this cause I'm constantly running out of time and it is quite literally impossible now? Why would they do that?
One extra tip I found is to throw the shuriken on the first side boxes and while the shuriken’s hitting them, use ninjutsu to destroy the purple boxes in the hallway. Once the side boxes are destroyed (you’ll see your points hit 1200), follow this guide from there and you’ll have over 40 seconds out the first room!!

There was one or two small things that I would do differently, (doesn't matter since you still had 8 seconds to spare) but the way you handled the third and last room was way better. I didn't realize how wide and powerful the fully charged Banishment was O_O nice vid 👍

This video helped a lot. I had to do it maybe around 15-20 times? To get close to it then it was a matter of doing better w my aims for "throws". I think locking targets in the beginning (very first hall at start) can cut a second or two.
This only helped me, so I knew where I needed to be time wise when it comes to finishing each room. That being said, I'm still thankful. Yuffie is fun, except for this shit. I didn't hate her battle style until this box shit, because precision doesn't exist for her. Even using lock on doesn't help. She does whatever the fuck she wants half the time. If her head is facing one way, but you have the camera facing where you want her to attack, she'll aim towards where her head is pointing. Making camera angle nearly useless during this mini-game. It's not fun, it's just a miserable time suck. At least clouds version was fun.
