About me: Dr Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh is an author, scholar and founder of the Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh Xperience (SMWX), a digital, youth-centred current affairs platform. He holds a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford and is a Lecturer in International Relations at Wits.
Spend few years at UCT and walked everyday past that statue to lectures and back without giving it a second thought. I think for me coming from kasi school I already accepted I was in foreign space, even from the black kids from private schools. The class divide was bigger battle for me personally. Walking past jamie stairs you can see that private school kids found it easier to integrate. Some spaces were less integrated that others. e.g. back then, Glenres was a blacks only. Had fun but was not politically conscious to question the status quo. I was happy to have a room and bed. Living off NFSAS grants didn't leave much for a social life especially if you want to graduate .
RhodesMustFall forced me to look at my campus experience critically, but i dont regret it. I loved every minute of it.
I got Dr Max Price's book as a gift late last year and put off reading it for a while. This interview has inspired me to get back into and finish it. He presents as empathetic, with a sincere regard for the people and bodies he leads. It was a tough role to play and I feel he did well.
I think the country needs more conversations like this. Not shouting matches.

I just saw a comment from a white person saying that they felt excluded at UCT after the fall of Rhodes. I think a lot of white people may struggle with coming to terms with how cultural figures they grew up celebrating aren't as heroic as they may have been taught, they were. Its's a tough identity crisis. My white Afrikaans friend had to navigate this when his dad celebrated Day of Reconciliation as Gelofte Dag meanwhile realizing that for his black Zulu friend it was rather a day of remembrance and mourning and the celebration of his culture might be insensitive to me. Change is difficult but he recognized that it must happen and our mutual understanding of each others history and empathy of how celebrate it is what keeps our friendship alive today. I was understanding towards him by recognizing that this was a part of his history and he was understanding in recognizing that for his ancestors it might have been a celebratory occasion but for mine it was a morbid and tragic one.

If you knew your history then you would know the zulus were at fault for massacring the leader of the voortrekkers and his men in an attempt to negotiate with the zulu king over land.
Wht a weird day to be sad by, when your ancestors caused it and lets not even get into the infighting within the zulu group for power at the time.
The only reason anybody looks up to Rhodes is for his investment in the country and giving of land to uct, the place you went to educate yourself.
The world is not black nor white. Respect him for giving you this opportunity and despise the time he was from.

I was still at UCT when Rhodes fell and unfortunately following the statues' fall I didn't experience a greater inclusion. In fact my experience was that it went worse or by very least, it continued to be exclusive to the black students and that's why today I still don't want to go to UCT for furthering my studies.
Stop that nonsense. You not a victim. UCT is normal as it always was.
I know of many people at UCT who are not black also feel more excluded now, following the Fallest movement, than ever before. I suppose that means that everyone now feels more excluded and alienated instead of fewer people.
I don't think you wrote tht last bit correct.
"Exclusive to" would mean only tht thing benefited. In this case blacks only? Wht I think you meant to say as the general view of the country is tht it's excluding of black students.
In tht case, from a white mans perspective...in highschool people complained a lot tht they needed better grades than their black counterparts to get in and as a student, I have to agree tht black people had it easier in terms of entrance requirements.
So to say it's excluding black students is a blatant lie. If anything it's encouraging black students with affirmative action, grants and scholarships.
Unfortunately, usually these black students take advantage at the cost of others scary to think the next generation of skilled workers are going to be near illiterate in their respected industries.

I enjoyed Max Price's forthrightness, he comes across as a genuine leader and person.
Not being a university guy and not being experienced in the culture, I've always wondered what goes on in the mind of guys like him, when they are being grilled by students and academics, especially when I watch UCT talks and lectures, where he is on stage as well...also knowing how the general white person can be pissed when feeling embarrassed.
I wish we could have more of him on the channel, I also wish to have heard his views on what he thinks of de-colonisation in education.
I would have passed his book at the book store, but I am going to get a copy today.
I can't wait to watch this episode. I know Dr Max Price is promoting a book but I would love to see other VC's being interviewed on SMWX.

It's interesting to note that Sizwe was notably hostile toward Gayton McKenzie yet so calm and passive with Max Price. How did this come about?
5:49 in and I'm already seeing tap dancing....so polite and well-mannered toward Mr Price. Lots of "ja, ja, yes, mhh mhh, ja"..... Why can't all guests be treated the same?
I'm not even Gayton's biggest fan, but there is a clear difference in treatment. There is a lot of Yes-Massah going on here.
SMWX is among my favorite podcasts, I'll continue to support and share because it's local and because the content is relevant.
But the shucking and jiving here is saddening.
He disclosed his relationship to Max in the start, we are human beings not robots. Max played a key role in his education and life. This will be a natural bias, is there no one who has ever uplifted you? Thank you for sharing your comment
I believe it's an ideological bias he has on his channel, Gayton pointed it out very clearly. Sizwe will largely have guests that will pander leftist theory and ideology or anyone who favours the eff. His show on the SABC is where he tries to set up a narrative that if you don't want to blame the West or left wing politics is the solution then he'll grill them, but those that do he is more favourable and becomes the "yes man" he is.
There are far more brilliant people than him who are capable of conducting proper interviews who don't have a name or political connections to set up what he has. Sizwe represents elitism in the left of which the left won't address.

A Great debate needs to happen between all the groups or sides in SA, because what is happening is SA is very dangerous, we are in the cusps of a civil war. Those who have and those who dont have. The'haves are opposed to RET whilst the have-not's want RET. I think the most important election in our history is not being given the importance and media coverage it requires, because the outcome of this election will be the radicals gaining power, but the most important question is which side. The Left or the Right.

Definitely a guy that led the way for subsequent Vice Chancellors to destroy the university and its brand. Just another political establishment that has placed education as a secondary metric.
Misguided radicalism is dangerous as there's always a radical person or group to out radical you. Why can't we learn from our past where exchange of wisdom and debates won the day instead of insults.
