Thank you so much! I am definitely interested in Falling Skies. I was going to order that one, but I preordered Red Dust Rebellion. I do love GMT games.
Absolutely 🙂. I think people should know that there are more options out there. Having read your rules, I am near positive I will enjoy your solo mode. Now to find the time to play...🤣🤣
You must be one of the nicest blokes I've met online, and I've met some really nice blokes, especially in the BG41 community. I'm so happy to know you Daniel - this is a beautiful video too. Well done.
Thank you very much for this video and for your Chanel. I'm new to the solo board gaming community (didn't even know it existed). And I am absolutely hooked. The game that started my research for the hobby was Cyberpunk 2077 - Gangs of Nigthcity - The board game. I played the solo mode and loved it. Then, I looked for more and found World of warcraft (a pandemic system game) and again, loved it. Now, I'm starting my collection for real. This 10-ways-to-enjoy-solo-gaming video showed me a whole new world of possibilities. Thank you again and looking forward to more of your videos.
Great list! I love the way you took the time to explain what makes each type unique. I am definitely going to have to check out the Ark Nova variant you mentioned. I still enjoy in the in-box solo mode and have the materials printed off for ARNO but haven't tried it yet. Thanks again for all you do for our community!
I love all solo modes as well. A lot of people stick with their preferred method but I think they're really missing out. I hope those who do that watch this and are inspired to try something new. Your insight, and especially your enthusiasm (I loved watching you geek out over Turing Machine), could make the most narrow minded person loosen up!
Thank you, Donna. The solo hobby definitely has so much to offer, especially if you are willing to make your own content. I'm glad you enjoy all solo modes, and hope I inspired you in some way too 🙂. Thanks for watching!
@@tabletopforone I don't think I'm good enough. But after watching this vid, I just might write down some of my solo ideas. So yes, you have inspired me!
This is such an awesome, much-needed video! I always think about how many different ways I can play certain games. Thank you so much for the great recommendations and amazing content you keep making!
Thank you so much, Janet! I'm so glad you liked the video and think it's helpful. I honestly almost talked myself out of making it a few times, but went with it anyways.
You may be able to guess (cos of Crumbs! 🥪😅) but I’m a big fan of “for the puzzle” and not a big fan of “beat your own score”. Love your energy and love for games as always particularly the way Turing Machine comes through… may well have to try and get that on the Christmas list!!!
Great video! Thanks for your explanation of different approaches to the solo games. You’ve got such a great point about making your own solo mode. I guess I’ve done that before without realizing it when I’ve played solo in order to learn a new game and how to explain it to others. Falling Skies is great although I’ve only dabbled with it. The box is a great value as it offers campaigns and other ways to play the game. I’ve just discovered the Oniverse, solo games, like Onirim and Castellion. Looking forward to those.
The past few days I have been working on a campaign for Dwellings of Eldervale. 16 different scenarios playing a different faction for each one. I found after my 100 plays that I had avoided the Light Faction because I had a bias to it. Now that I have final used it, I can see the benefits. This was such a great subject and engaging episode. I have used many of your ideas but I can really appreciate how you framed it. I really should finish Under Falling Skies campaign. I just started playing randomly mid campaign. Thank you for such a insightful subject! ❤️❤️❤️
What a fun video - very interesting to watch as I don’t much enjoy solo play. I much prefer 2 players, and will even play true solos this way. I did however play the Gloomhaven campaign on my own with two characters, but only because my other gaming friends couldn’t commit to it 😂. Anyway, fabulous content Daniel - keep it up!
Another great video! What an excellent idea for a top ten list. I enjoy pretty much all the ways that you mentioned except multi-handed solo. My favourite way to play solo games is against an AI/Automa opponent. And I don't mind when it's a complicated one - my most played game this year is Weather Machine; 13 plays all solo. And Terracotta Army is next on my list to learn. I haven't really delved into the world of fan-made variants but my favourite game in my collection that doesn't have a solo mode is Endeavor: Age of Sail. And I saw a fan-made variant on BGG that could actually be good. So, I may try that sometime soon. I will have to look into the Ark Nova variant you mentioned. I've heard of ArnoBot but not the other one. I don't mind Ark Nova's solo mode as it's still a clear win/loss condition but wouldn't mind something that simulates playing against another player.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I wonder if you have yet played Pax Pamir or Pax Renaissance? They might be right up your alley. Let me know if you try that Ark Nova variant. I'll be interested in your thoughts on it. Thanks for watching!
My favorite way to enjoy solo gaming is probably for the story and destinies is perfect for that. I use the casual mode so I can get lost in the story. even though it is attached to an app, I feel like I unplugged for a bit. I need to try sleeping God's for the story element as well. I was shying away from it as I thought it would have too much reading for my poor tired brain. I am relieved to hear it isn't too much.
Oh yeah, I've heard Destinies is great for the story telling. As for Sleeping Gods, the story parts are usually 1-3 paragraphs long. It works so well, getting you back to the game, and providing story in bite-size chunks. Thanks for your thoughts!
Great video! I really dislike playing two handed, only when I must to learn the game. Also I just got Pax Renaissance, let's see if it changes my mind. I like the Uwe solo system more than I like the Uwe games. But I need to play more Feast for Odin. I'm also looking forward to start a heavy campaign game, I don't have those yet but they are coming. The best solos I enjoy are against an Automa that is smart and easy to manage. Rarely I enjoy games ONLY for the puzzle, Ark Nova is a fantastic exception. And I agree, scenarios, even if they are not a campaign, greatly enhance solo games. Really good insight here!
Glad you enjoyed the video. The nice thing about the Uwe solo system is that it can be adopted to many worker placement games (with adjustments of course). That's what I started with my Argent the Consortium solo mode, but it has morphed a bit beyond that. Let me know what you think of A Feast For Odin, or post it in the group. 🙂 Have a great week!
I've done the same creating a solo mode for a game or made updates to an existing mode for enhancements. I agree with David T. Solo modes, for me they are either a hit or miss. Yes he's a good solo designer. I also like the automas by stonemaier games and Alexander Pfister. I prefer playing against an opponent. BYOS game I actually enjoy is Underwater Cities but majority are just ok. I need a ranking system or objectives to beat in order to make those type of games interesting. Two handed just not my thing. Coin games with flow charts driven opponents are a major turn off. Card driven [solo deck] to determine actions are my preferred method. Great video... Until next time!
Thank you for your comments. I agree about Stonemaier automas (Automa Factory). I love streamlined automas like that, because it lets you get back to the game quickly. I don't blame you about Coin games. Pax games have the same flowcharts. That's why I play multi-handed. I do hope someday to play them multi-player, because I think they would be great that way. Hope you have a great week!
I was wondering, when you create your own solo mode (say for a multiplayer game with no solo mode), what is your thought process? How do you figure out what rules to change and the way to do it? I would love to try that, but I don't know how to go about it.
I start with identifying the key points of interaction between the solo player and an opponent. Then, I create a method by which to simulate those interactions (either by ruleset or automa cards). Then, I figure out how the AI scores, whether following normal scoring rules or AI specific scoring rules. Then, I spend the remaining time balancing the scoring and interactions. It takes time to balance it all, but it's quite fun and you spend a lot of time playing games you love.
I have friends to play board games with...but between work, school and family it's hard as heck to meet up. And of course, our 'days off' never match up >.
Hi you say it's possible to make solo versions either. I would like to have a solo version of the game Fika and hanamikoji but I don't see how to make a solo. I love these 2 little games :) have a nice day 🙂
I haven't played Fika, so I don't know where to begin with that one. However, with Hanamikoji, I would start by playtesting a random selection (cards and actions), and then modify the solo mode from there. As with any solo mode, it takes time, testing, and balance. But I do believe it is possible to make one for this game.

Thank you! So, for Marvel Champions, I'd recommend the Red Skull Expansion and the Sinister Motives Expansion. I think those are the best bang for your buck and add a ton of really good content. As for Sleeping Gods, it does sound like a good fit. You may want to wait until the new one comes out (Distant Skies) which has you managing a smaller crew (6 I think).
