My Mum near the Sea I honour. Who brought me up from the age of two. Bless my Mum Isabella. I am the daughter that was adopted. Susan is my name and I was adopted because of the appalling circumstances that had happened to me when I was a baby. But it's many many years ago. My dad who is in heaven saved me and he adopted me from the age of two. He adored me and my Mum. Kind wonderful parents. I love them so very much
I love Barbara's courage, she is tough in the right, special way, we all learn from her in Her movies and her personal life, what a great classic lady.

writeract2 La Principessa Anne, so sad that it very much seems that way. I keep hoping one day, at least for my daughter she will meet up with someone like Herbert Marshall's character.
writeract2 La Principessa Anne Are you saying you aren't like that and don't know anyone like that? If so, that is very sad. Perhaps if you moved you would be with a better group of people. There are many good ones where I live. They work in the schools, in the hospitals and clinics, in the fire dept, in the businesses,.... They volunteer to help others, give generously to charities and those in need, and can be relied on to do more in an emergency. These people give until it hurts and give some more. In fact, strangely enough, I've found people like that wherever I have lived. Maybe that's because I also give and help. Beware cynicism. It makes you believe that the world is an ugly place with selfish people and there is no use trying to change that. That's what the few horrible people want you to think so you won't get in their way. Find those who are optimistic and caring and your life will be transformed through knowing them and becoming like them yourself.
Its also the story that holds it that way. Lets not forget the director. The script! This is a perfect REAL, human story that was very well delivered, almost without the maneirisms people liked actors to do on camera.
Herbert Marshall, who plays Jim. See if you can tell: He lost a leg while serving in World War I, and rehabilitated with a wooden leg. This did not stop him from making good his decision to make the stage his vocation. He used a very deliberate square-shouldered and guided walk - largely unnoticeable - to cover up his disability. He's almost 50 years old when he appears in this film. Stanwyck was 31.
Have you seen him in "The Enchanted Cottage" with Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire? He plays a similar character, but in a much more limited sense. He plays a pilot who was blinded when he was shot down in World War One. Robert Young is initially engaged to a very selfish woman at the beginning of the film. He enlists in the Air Corps to fight in World War II, and is disfigured when he is shot down. He goes to stay alone in the cottage that he'd originally booked for his honeymoon, and it is there that a friendship blossoms between Young and McGuire, who was done up to be homely in the film. Herbert Marshall, through his blind eyes sees Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire for the beautiful people they really are, and is a kind of guide to them. It's a beautiful film, and worth watching over and over again.
WOW! I am amazed. HM has been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. I never, ever, even saw a hint of his misfortune. Thanks for the info. And the great dialogue belongs to the writers... wish they were around today. Thanks.
I thought I had seen all of Barbra Stanwyk's movies. I loved this one. Thanks for uploading it. The actors and actresses were superb, the story line engaging and, of course, romance doesn't always win out, which makes this more endearing and honest.
What a movie. Just wonderful. I had not seen it before. Anything with Ms. Stanwyck, and Mr. Marshall is a treat. And Cesar Romero. This was one year after Stella Dallas. Her son is delightful. Thank you for this. I'm so grateful I got to meet and talk with Ms. Stanwyck.
Agree. (Maybe if she could tell the truth a little sooner - of being the real mother of the little boy - to the adoptive father, maybe this one would have been comprehensive to let her see the boy every day, like an aunty, for her and Jim to keep their true love too).
I LOVED THE SUBTITLES...it was great seeing french? again. It was wonderful to see how morals were back in days gone by. Self sacrifices above personal gain.

@Kathy: That is an unforgivably stupid comment. 1. Even the US releases dozens of superb independent films every year -- great scripts, actors, directors, and crew -- as does every EU nation, plus the UK. If you don't know about these films, that's on YOU. 2. Generalizations are always more false than true, *and* they're uttered / written by people who are not only being lazy but are refusing to do their patriotic duty, which is to THINK, to use your brain, to educate yourself throughout your life. The world is a bigger mess today than ever before because of the climate crisis, and on top of that many nations are facing frightening challenges to democracy. We cannot afford to carry lazy thinkers; we cannot afford to waste time cleaning up the mess they create by lazily electing grifters and would-be autocrats. So get off your duff, use your brain, make decisions that will strengthen (not weaken) this world, and get INVOLVED in solutions.
It's great to see one woman's pre-manipulation exposed before she ruins a child's life. Then get to see one that will truly love the child (even though it's her own, which when you have a heart to love a child it doesn't matter if its your own or adopted) get to come out on the proverbial top! Win - Win for all involved... A child can be such a blessing... BTW - loved the fashion on both the women and the men! Thank you for the upload! :)
It should, you mis-typed it. Tried to edit and add "spoiler alert"... But also noticed the not so nice notifications of telling me so. Have a good life, with that behavior. Plus, what was "revealed" was not a surprise it's what the entire movie was about. The imagination of the writer was in the "how." The movie is very mush well written, directed, and acted. Could you imagine the "trailer" for this movie!?!? Sheesh... Plus, what a revealing initial comment I've typed. Maybe best practice would have been to be kind. I apologize up front to those who are kind in notifying me of my unintentional mistake. To the rest, you are ineffective. To all - Have a good day... Blessings.
This hit me like a train out of no where . I wasn’t thinking ahead like I normally do ,I’ve made the same choice in my life. My kids always came first and I love them beyond what I thought was possible. But in doing so I missed being with the one person I truly love . It hurt hearing her say “ no Jim I love you “
Yes, but in the hereafter all things will be made right, if we just do what's right in this life, like this mother did. Though she should have never made the mistake of giving up the baby in the 1st place for adoption, then she probably would have had both her baby and the guy she loved eventually.
Christine Dunn Fortunately, the man she loved understood her and her feelings. This was not the kind of film where the heroine gets everything. Romero was here to add some fun, and fun he was!

Phil truly loved her..He loved her enough to let her marry his friend so she could be with her child. :) .
I love them so very much
Thanks for sharing your story, Suzita. Blessings upon you, your Mom, and dear Dad of happy memory.
I love Barbara's courage, she is tough in the right, special way, we all learn from her in
Her movies and her personal life, what a great classic lady.
Johnnie Russell was such a bright (scintillating) child actor; very charming. Loved Barbara Stanwick's affection for him. Nice little film; thanks for posting. 6/2018
What a lovely little gem of a movie and in such good condition. It was fun seeing Cesar Romero as such a young man. For those who remember, he played the Joker in the campy television version of Batman. Thanks for uploading!
Cesar Romero also played in a lot of the old movies he was a great actor
thanks to you PatrioticGlory for sharing stories. i enjoyed Mr. Cesar Romero and absolutely loved the way boy walking down the stairs !!
TY for this wonderful Babara Stanwyk love story...I've never seen it before, and I thought I had seen all her films. Great Cast & Screenplay~it reminded me a little of "Now Voyager," sacrificing all for a child's benefit...the way life should work!
the best film I have found in UA-cam , Barbara Stanwick in a tremendous performance . She was a queen . A film of high quality . A masterpiece . Thank you so much for sharing .
this movie was so amazing. thank you so much for the upload..
I totally sobbed...I have two sons. I gave up happiness for my boys too- a mom's love....it's eternal...and this is for always - thru the ages...hard to every explain to anyone....oh I haven't cried in a long time over movies.
I have just watched 2 Herbert Marshall films back to back. Simply delightful. I have always enjoyed his acting so these rare films have made my winter afternoon a pleasant experience!
Barbara Stanwyck, , Herber Marshall, Ian Hunter, and Cesar Romero are great performers of the Classic Hollywood Movies.
Casar Romero was so handsome i saw him o the Golden Girls he was in his 80 and still handsome
I enjoyed this old film far more than I ever expected to...These kind of lovely old pictures are what so many of us still long for...Thank you so much for sharing & giving me such a pleasant evening...
Whew. What a heartbreaker! Such a good balance, though; almost screwball at times..and three of my favorite actors in one film. Wonderful. Thank you for uploading this!
The kind of selflessness, wisdom and maturity uttered by Herbert Marshall's character is non existent today.
writeract2 La Principessa Anne, so sad that it very much seems that way. I keep hoping one day, at least for my daughter she will meet up with someone like Herbert Marshall's character.
Amen to that 🙏🏾😢
writeract2 La Principessa Anne Are you saying you aren't like that and don't know anyone like that?
@@653j521 AMEN
MELA exactly. In real life men have never been all that gallant unless it served some purpose for them.
Amazing print on this film....looks like it was made last week.
Its also the story that holds it that way.
Lets not forget the director. The script!
This is a perfect REAL, human story that was very well delivered, almost without the maneirisms people liked actors to do on camera.
Thank you. Very enjoyable. Cesar Romeo can move 🕺🏿💃🏿 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😃
I get to relive these times - my dear parents’ times - through each of these marvelous films 💎
Thank you djoi001 for posting this wonderful old movie.
Anything with Barbara stanwyck,is going to be good.and this movie is no exception
Susan, have you seen "Sorry, Wrong Number"? Definitely one of her best performances.
Thank you it was a nice film.
She was so beautiful and a wonderful person .
Thanks.
I think this is one of the best among Zanuck's productions. What a lovely story!
Herbert Marshall used to visit service hospitals during WW2 and talk to the guys who had lost limbs giving them tips about getting around etc.
I thought I had seen all of Barbra Stanwyk's movies. I loved this one. Thanks for uploading it. The actors and actresses were superb, the story line engaging and, of course, romance doesn't always win out, which makes this more endearing and honest.
Thank you for uploading this movie!
What a movie. Just wonderful. I had not seen it before. Anything with Ms. Stanwyck, and Mr. Marshall is a treat. And Cesar Romero. This was one year after Stella Dallas. Her son is delightful. Thank you for this. I'm so grateful I got to meet and talk with Ms. Stanwyck.
The ending threw me for a loop, but this was a great story with superb acting. Thanks so much for uploading this movie.
I concur (-_-)
Agree. (Maybe if she could tell the truth a little sooner - of being the real mother of the little boy - to the adoptive father, maybe this one would have been comprehensive to let her see the boy every day, like an aunty, for her and Jim to keep their true love too).
Totally - I'm trying hard to think of an ending with a better distribution of pain.
Thanks for the fine movie and the note about Herbert Marshall. This makes a very good actor great. Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful actress. Kept us guessing til the end.
Great move 👏👏👏👏🎥🎥📽️ .. Thank you for sharing..
I LOVED THE SUBTITLES...it was great seeing french? again. It was wonderful to see how morals were back in days gone by. Self sacrifices above personal gain.
@Thia: That's a ridiculous statement. For as far back as records exist (and probably for centuries before that), humans have been driven by the same emotions, and have grappled with issues surrounding how we live with others in society.
In addition, anyone who thinks that the often preachy and moralistic films of classic Hollywood are at all reflective of society needs to get an education; the two-dimensionality of mid-century HW characters, and the falseness of the plots, is no more real than, say, today's reality-TV participants are.
Throughout history, some ppl have been bullies, some have been targets, some have striven for a better world in which people treat others well, some have been grifters, etc. Human nature hasn't changed, and societal values haven't changed since this movie was made. Human rights have been expanded, meaning that women are no longer relegated to wife-and-mommy-only -- which is a good thing for everyone, including the children who suffered bc their thwarted mothers tried to live vicariously thru them.
Finally, the steady no. of people who continue to choose helping professions that pay very little is proof that plenty of contempo humans are more selfless than selfish.
PLEASE don't make reductive statements. PLEASE use your brain; we're facing existential problems today (the climate crisis; the attacks on democracy in many nations) bc ppl do not use their brains!
@@dw999 Oh DW: many points you've brought to the table I agree with.
Re-reading what I wrote.... Mmmm-sigh; you put your twist into a projected assumption, of far more than was written...
So, if there is any disharmony being broadcasted, it's by your brains.
2020 was an eye opener for me also: to see the sea of masked unthinking lab test subjects, actually lock themselves into a pathogen breeding environment (indoors vs outdoors- the Sun's UV rays KILLS ALL PATHOGENS, therefore OUTDOORS is the HEALTHIEST place to be- the PATHOGEN FREE ZONE) and be labeled NON-ESSENTIAL and >this is the part which blew me out the water< compliance was the masses reaction:
My my my my my: brought such a bitter taste in my mouth: it still seems as if there isn't a mouthwash strong enough to wipe that NASTY poison out the mouth!
And to WITNESS people line up BELIEVING, an experimental human-made message (mRNA) to our DNA operating design is the SANE thing to do; cuz thee INFERIOR CREATOR's design just ain't worth saving lives-only Science knows that formula-😜. Parents brought their children to get the patented pricks experimental serum, cuz SCIENCE SAID SO!
Line up they did! Jab on down was done.
So maybe ya think manners have IMPROVED the last half century, and the society we, 60's generation of FREE LOVE and little to zero accountability for the family unit's compensation for the amoral actions taught to our youth, maybe you think manners have improved, but our society's customer service, professional policies, & public transportation patterns simply doesn't jive with your conclusion.
Nah- FalseFauci & Friends would NEVER HAD been able to pull off the global vaccine scam before WWI occurred, because people abided by COMMON SENSE rather than this media-made madness the masses complied with for these two years!
And -sighing a big fat sigh-stupid is as stupid does is still being done! Granted there's a tad bit of a hiccup in the scammers plan of vaccinating thee ENTIRE WORLD, but that's still only a hiccup: these gross crimes against humanity is still the order of our political arena's agenda.
And what's really being done? -truckers zooming the Capital-
The rest of the citizens just keep trucking down the tyranny line, with barely a notice being a non-essential lab animal is what we have become!$?
What, how could've this happened?
Thanks for uploading this wonderful movie! A great cast, and amazing fashion.
Absolutely brilliant film. Thank you
Love love love this film. Thank you for uploading ❤❤❤
A golden surprise - recovering such gems out of the blue is triple rewarding - for me, for my Mom and for a couple of friends to whom I will recommend this "goodbye".
Herbert Marshall is one of those rare great actors.
Kind of overlooked but very solidly good
Christine
He was a very nice foil for Bette Davis in 'The Little Foxes' and a devoted husband in, "The Letter'.
Yeah ~ There’s something soft but sexy about him I thoroughly enjoy!
@@jeffmay7358 His performance in TLF is brilliant.
This is one of the best movies out of Hollywood...... very entertaining.....!!!!
This was a really good movie. Thanks for sharing.
Merci pour le partage ! quelle belle histoire émouvante...
That was great and thanks for posting them. I love Babs' movies. That was so bittersweet.
I love this movie! I have watched it a few times over the years. I truly wish they still made good movies, with good acting, directing and values!
Must learn to look at Comments first it helps you decide whether you want to waste your time LoL Janice Harley Thanks
Kathy H. Good conversation
Richard Todd ,Herbert Marshall, . Claude Rains, Paul Muni... Actors of substance. Movies worth seeing again and again.
CR = substance too never got due credit always in backdrop
As someone studying French these are great subtitles to a great movie
Wow! I almost passed this up. I wasn't expecting this movie to be so superb!
OMG Cesar Romero is so light on his feet, What a dancer!
I agree. I wanted to take a twirl on the dance floor with the Count. And oh, how He and Barbara did the tango !
He was so dashing too. Quite a figure.
Excellent film love the end was a surprise
.....what a lovely accent he has. Always attractive. And they didn't marry... What a beautiful beautiful movie. So touching.
I love this movie! Third time watching it!! I only watch movies from this time period. Nothing but excellence!!
Thank You, that was a touching movie. I really enjoy watching Barbara Stanwyck she was a great
actress with a lot of class.
Another great, dramatic Barbara Stanwyck performance that they somehow never told the movie going audiences about.
Stanwyck and the director are really in tune with each other. The moments...
thank you for revealing part of the film--an important part
Hey Tawyna, ever heard of a little something called a spoiler alert?
Blessings.
shhh
Excellent movie,,intriguing ending, A MUST SEE MOVIE
The best and only way to end it.
I disagree
She loved jym and could still be a part of d kids life
Watch this movie 🍿 so many times!

Thank you for uploading this movie.
Love these classic movies!
I thought i had seen every Stanwyck movies. Glad i saw this one, it is so adorable that you half to watch it
Please tell me you've seen Sorry, Wrong Number.
@j.j.cagney There's a good one here on YT called Lady of Burlesque 1943
This hit me like a train out of no where . I wasn’t thinking ahead like I normally do ,I’ve made the same choice in my life. My kids always came first and I love them beyond what I thought was possible. But in doing so I missed being with the one person I truly love . It hurt hearing her say “ no Jim I love you “
Yes, but in the hereafter all things will be made right, if we just do what's right in this life, like this mother did. Though she should have never made the mistake of giving up the baby in the 1st place for adoption, then she probably would have had both her baby and the guy she loved eventually.
Very good movie! Storyline was quite Avant guard for 1938. Good quality too.
She could have married the man she loved . Also, why was Romero in this film--??
Christine Dunn Fortunately, the man she loved understood her and her feelings. This was not the kind of film where the heroine gets everything.
Romero was here to add some fun, and fun he was!
If you're referring to unwed pregnancy, fairly common theme in the early '30s.
avant garde
What a delightful movie ❤️
Excelllent! Loved every minute of this wonderful film!
Cesar Romero was hilarious! Enjoyable film.
CR reminded me of a persistent talker I couldn’t wait to get of. In a sweet sense of course💃🕺
Oops rid of
OMG - Barbara Stanwyck, one of my favorite actresses ever (her and Bette Davis) - god, she's so good. :}
Hello Alexa,
How are you doing ?
Excellent depiction of how life can really be most of the time. I love old movies and have always had an attraction to Ms. Stanwyck.

Merci encore et je suis vraiment ravi de trouvé cette belle film.
Fabulous wardrobe..Caesar Romero seems to be on speed however....wow, thanks for this
10 thumbs up and beyond. love it
Some real words of wisdom from the character Jim when he's parting company with Margo at the end of the Film.
