A full compositing shoot would be nice..could be a simple one..but to show us the right steps to accomplish the final shoot specially prespective of elements in one shoot..and some of gizmos you usually use to make it fairly easier..so simple composite scene could be nice
It’s great when you find someone who knows more than you and teaches in a way that you resonate with. I’m excited to get this project file and follow along. Thank you for making it.
Pretty useful and a great video! Got a question about the Gizmo. Where can I find "ColourEdge", does this one belong to a Gizmo pack or something? I couldn't find it... Cheers!
I believe it's from nukepedia although if you can't find it maybe it's been deleted. There are plenty of others like colorSmear etc or even the default one in nuke called edge extend.
Haha! Thanks dude. It's all fairly universal. Different softwares just have the buttons in different places 😉 the approach is always basically the same
Thanks but did you miss the part of the video where I talked about keying hair for 4 minutes at 11:20? 😅 What else do you want to see that I didn't cover here???
thanks for sharing these great tips, was just thinking wouldnt the edge extension trick also eliminate the need to do the edge painting if you extend the edges far enough? Also do you have any tips for blending edge and core mattes such that the transition is smooth between the two mattes?
Thanks, glad you liked them. If you push the edge extension so far it covers all the motion blur it would be way too strong on the rest of the subject. So you'd have to basically keymix one with and one without and then paint in the mask to reveal it which is essentially the same process as what I did anyway. As for blending them, the core matte shouldn't really need blending in. Both alphas should have a value of one and you should erode it to the point where it doesn't go over the edge anywhere. You could try blurring it or using an erode with a mask so it only erodes soke areas for more control. But generally they should go together pretty easily
That edge painting tip is so useful. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience! Quick question for you, from your experience, what's your opinion on green tracking markers on a green screen? I heard recently that that's the way to go, and after dealing with some footage with a green screen with yellow tracking markers, I'm definitely sick of the way that that combination screws with hair. Any strong opinions either way?
Thanks! Yeah it's a super handy tip. As for the markers, I think it depends on the shot. I mostly see red markers on screens just due to contrast. I think if the camera isn't moving much then green markers are probably quite helpful as they're less of a nightmare when passing behind hair etc. But if the camera moves fast or there's camera shake, green markers will get lost in motion blur very quickly. So it depends!
Not really as far as I'm aware. Just a different way to get the same result. I'm sure when I was learning I saw a tutorial of someone stacking them so I've always just done that
@AlfieVaughan Ah ok, thanks! Just another question, and I think you sort of answered someone else but I didn't quite understand; how would you clean up the grey around the hair and glasses after using colouredge/edgeextend? And how would keep or add the reflective quality of the glasses? Thanks again!
@suzelise the hair can be tricky. It would probably be a case of eroding it slightly and merging a hair coloured constant into the plate using the alpha so it maintains the hair outline of the key. Then you can mix that in on the edges to remove the grey edge. For the glasses, I'd probably roto the bit that couldn't be keyed and just despill it so the green highlights became white
Edge extensions don't really work on hair as it's so fine. I usually just put a constant that's the colour of the hair though the alpha and blend it in
That's more of an editing thing than a compositing thing. I'd also say it's more about your PC specs than how fast Nuke is. I work on EXR sequences not prores
@@AlfieVaughan I've just barely dipped into your videos and I'm learning a lot! and I've been doing video / compositing for 15 years! I've never tried ACES going to try it today

About Gizmos and where we could find them, the best ones
Thank you so much for this series! One of the few truly concise introductions to Nuke.

Hello @Alfie Excellent video. why did you stop with just one video. please continue the keying series.
Thanks! I'm slowly adding to this series over time
Is it just one video or are there any other about keying, anyhow would love to see your videos regularly

I've used colorSmear before. They all do the same thing really. I prefer the controls in ColourEdge but it's all personal preference

is anyone else having an issue were the sliders on the keyer node has no effect on the image on viewer1 (all nodes are connected)
