I think a big misstep a lot of VFX artists make is thinking the more tracking markers there are, the better the track result will be. This is only partially true. The number of tracking markers there are only has little to do with the solve error. Yes, put a heap of tracking markers at the start and so there will be a better chance of getting a bunch of solid tracks, but after that, delete all the not as solid tracking markers that are driving up your solve error. Blender only needs 8 tracking markers to make a track. So place a lot of tracking markers in the shot, and delete all but the few with the best results that you actually need. In the end, you only actually need the base amount you need to keep a track. Now yes, having a lot will help you place a floor, walls etc. and so I don't suggest actually doing that, but I was just mentioning that you don't (in the end) need heaps of tracking markers. P.S. Please don't take this as me bashing you in any way Alfie. I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot from you! It's just that I used to think differently and when you actually think about it, you don't need your scene filled with tracking markers.
That's not entirely true but I know what you mean. There's more to it than just the number of trackers. Also blender and nukes tracking is a bit different so i don't know if the minimum of 8 really applies. For example, a solve error of 0.1 with 10 trackers will probably be much worse than a solve error of 0.4 with 500 trackers. Even though the overall error is higher, the computer has a better understanding of the scene in general. So it really depends on more than just how many you have
Great tutorial! But I wonder if you need to add the distortion back on top (to the patches) before merging to the mainstream since you tracked on the undistorted plate.
Technically it's probably best to do the paint on the undistorted plate and then redistort. But in this case I tracked the undistorted plate but then did the paint work for the patches on the source plate so there's not really any need to redistort the patches
i am not sure to understand something. You have undistort your image for extracting your camera. but under you scanline you don't put back the distortion ? before merging ?
@@AlfieVaughan I understand that the difference is minimal, but without the distort node applied after the scanline render, the patch will 'slide' against the plate. Think about it: you're using a 3d camera and the result is undistorted. It is best to apply a distort node to ensure no sliding, no matter how minimal.
True but the distortion is only really visible at the edges. These patches were almost all in the middle of the frame. It's not perfect practice but I'd challenge you to see any of the patches sliding in the shot
@Alfie Vaughan I believe keying video specially for hair detailed keying... then you can do a full 2d compositing shoot like those in movies... also screen or sky replacement...then would be nice to do a general video on the most used effects/gizmos for compositing in nuke
You did a tutorial on a round trip from Nuke NC to Blender and back, with the tracking in Blender. Would you envisage doing the track in Nuke (non NC) and then shifting that to blender? Or does blender work best with it's own tracked scenes? And totally off topic, reflecting HDRIs in Nuke. Let's say you added a card and wanted it to be a window etc. I haven't seen any tutorial on that yet that seemed to give me the answers... ta geez.
Unfortunately you can't export tracks from nuke NC to blender as the writeGeo node doesn't work. I use nuke indie so I do about half my tracking in blender half in nuke depending on the complexity of the shot. In nuke there's a reflection node and then you when you plug it into the renderman render node you can see proper reflections from that surface. That would do what you're after. Not entirely sure if its disabled in non commercial or not though...
hello, i exported my video, the photo stuck to the wall, but as i watched it i noticed it kinda glides along with the camera a bit? like its not completely stuck on the wall if that makes sense
Sounds like your geo for the wall might not be in quite the right spot in 3D. Make sure you create the card based on where the points of the wall are in the pointcloud so you know your scene has the correct depth
You use a write geo node :) but you can't do it in non-commercial. Exporting cameras is limited. But if you have nuke indie or the full license then you can
It's a legacy node that's been replaced in more recent versions. To access it you have to press X and then search the legacy nodes for "LensDistortion" and then press enter. It's case and space sensitive so make sure you type it correctly. Then it should work 👍
