1:42 Splash, closed hi-hat, closed hi-hat, tambourine, china, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat. And it all sounds like he carefully weighed up his options and picked specifically those cymbals for each note, almost forming a funky melody. This is why I'll always love Portnoy's drumming

Honestly, going back and listening to that part, I feel like what he played is actually kind of obvious. Like if I had to work with splash, closed hi hat, tambourine, china and open hi-hat, I probably would have done something similar. There's just sort of an order that feels right with those cymbals, and that's what he played.

I'm a keyboardist. A drummer introduced me to this and it's the only Dream Theater song I've heard. I've been trying for about 10 years to understand where "1" is in the extremely complex drum lead-in going into the syncopated intro riff. Listening to this song occasionally has helped me to understand music on a deeper level. It's like rhythmic ear-training and now I can feel the underlying groove of the drum lead-in relative to the guitar riff. Any complex or unusual rhythmic situation that I might encounter is extremely simple compared to this.

I'd say the toms sound great here and on most other recordings featuring Mike Portnoy, but I'm not at all a fan of the snare here. I prefer the snare sounds from the Liquid Drum Theater DVDs. Those snares "POPPED"! This one sounds WAY too thin and has too much "whack" and "crack" in the sound rather than "pop", almost like you'd hear with a snare in some types of gospel drumming or even with just a side snare.
And I gotta say that, although it's not featured on this track, the 26" bass drum on this particular setup has always sounded irritatingly weak and dead to me. Not sure if it's the tuning or just the preference of the mixing engineer, but it's basically disgusting for me to listen to a 26" bass drum that sounds like the one on this drumset. The one on Mike's "Hammer of the Gods" kit sounded a lot better to me in the clips I've heard of it.
All that said, I basically have no recording equipment at this time, and my only drumming video up on youtube was filmed with a camera whose microphone is NOT meant for professional quality, so what I said previously is just my opinion, not any kind of implication of my drum recording accomplishments (of which there basically are none, haha!).
Plus, I'm a big fan of Portnoy, and even got to meet him about 10 years ago, so the above comments on some of his drum sounds do not reflect my opinion on Mike himself. I hope someday he gets to play with Dream Theater again, even if it's just as a special guest for a live DVD shooting or something. And it'd be cool to see him get Liquid Tension Experiment back together for some live shows or maybe even a 3rd studio album!

@@armandoguerrero1946 Mike makes any drums sound amazing, no doubt. His drum tech needs more credit however. You know this when you pay an arm and a leg to buy his signature snare, put the exact heads as Mike, same wires, same setup and tight tuning. Then record it 100 different ways and never get the same cracking tune he gets no matter how you smack it. The EQ, the compression, the effects and delay, etc. That is what makes his drum sound so fantastic, then Mike takes it to another planet with his playing style..

FanaticalDrummer yeah I'm pretty sure when he made this video he had recorded Octavarium, and his snare sound on the albums changes quite a bit... So they may have use that snare EQ from octavarium here... But then again, it may have been a completely detached decision, I'm just guessing really 😂

Fantastic. This is what rock drumming is all about. Having fun and going balls out, it doesn't have to be perfect if the heart and feel is there! I mean, if it were any more perfect, maybe it wouldn't rock..You can only get so clinical, beyond that its just a boring drum machine.
