- Hello Everyone I'm Back! After weeks of gathering information, recording and editing the final completed video is here! Although I haven't been uploading I have still be working on this video since my last upload nearly every day. A lot has also happened in the last few weeks for me, including leaving my job, so I have also been busy with that. But I'm back with hopefully a informative video for all those interested in finding out who John Nathan-Turner was!
If you have enjoyed then please do leave a like, it's taken a lot of effort and I would love to know people have enjoyed it! Thank you!
It's great to be uploading again and hopefully see you in my next video soon!
One thing that was admirable about John Nathan Turner was his sheer determination. Very few producers would have the tenacity to keep going like he did, especially if they were losing their enthusiasm for the job.
It's clear that John loved Doctor Who, despite what his arsehole of a partner says. If he didn't, he would have simply surrendered to the BBC but he kept fighting them tooth and nail, despite wanting to move on to other projects. His exhaustion with Doctor Who towards the end of the Classic Era was sort of like when a married couple lose their enthusiasm. There's a period of wandering "do we love each other anymore?" and sometimes that can break a marriage but other times, the couple realise that they still love each other but it's not the same as it once was.
Thank you for commenting! 💙 I completely agree with you! He was very determined and did love the show which is why he kept on going, not wanting to see it cancelled. But like you said he got exhausted at the end being stuck with it and his enthusiasm for it did wane over time. Also that analogy sums it up perfectly!
@@Omnicient. Then you must not know about Chris Chibnall or Russel T Davies. They ruined Doctor Who FAR worse than John Nathan Turner did. Davies in just the last year has reaffirmed all off Chibnall's terrible writing choices instead of just admitting that he fucked up and deleting them. At least when Doctor Who died under Nathan-Turner, it was still undeniably Doctor Who. Now it's just a sick joke made by people who want to push a political agenda.
I just wanna tell you: this is an amazing video, keep it up :)
Woah thank you so much! 💙 That means a great deal and has definitely made my day! I really appreciate it! 😄
Good to see JNT getting some love. Thanks for making this video 👍
No problem at all, thank you for commenting! 💙 Glad you liked it! Most people recount how thoughtful and caring he was and you can tell everyone was against him near enough towards the end of Doctor Who so I thought it was only fair to show this and give more of a insight into the man himself. Seeing the vast majority of videos on JNT are just criticisms and what he did wrong.
JNT broke the news to Colin Baker regarding recasting the part of the doctor over the phone and not over a meal as you stated.
Thank you for commenting and clearing that up! 💙 Yes of cause, I think I was getting mixed up with another time he took someone out for a meal and broke the news early on and had to face a rather awkward meal for the rest of the time. That's when he learnt not to do it over a meal so therefore didn't for Colin, to the best of my knowledge? Thank you for pointing that out!
Nice video! I must confess though, i was utterly mesmerised by your moustache.
Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you liked the video! 💙 Not entirely sure if that's a good or bad thing? 😂 but nonetheless I'm trying out a different style now!
When a friend of mine and myself interviewed him back in the day, we found him a nice enough chap, but quietly guarded about future developments. I lost contact with that fellow interviewer of so many years ago. What happened to Tom Abel I wonder?
Woah thank you so much for sharing your own experiences of interviewing him! 💙 It's great to hear from someone who has actually met him! It doesn't surprise me in a way to hear he was guarded about future developments. Maybe it either had to do with him hoping he would be leaving soon and/or wanting to keep it secret from the "Barkers" who would find out. He did apparently become very conscious about leaks. What happened to Tom Abel indeed, maybe that's a video idea for me to do another time!?
@@TheBlueWhoReview Tom was a splendid chap. He was at college - about a year behind me - and his abiding interest - if I remember correctly - was film and television. Like myself, he'd be in his early sixties by now - if still around of course. One needs get used to these things as we age. He also had a massive collection of Heavy Metal Sci-fi-Fantasy magazines. Of course, like myself, his plans may have been cast asunder. That's the way of the world sadly. We met JNT at the crossover point between Baker and Davison. My own illustration of him appears in one of the Peter Haining books, looking at a sheaf of papers with 'Season 22', the Black Dalek peering over his shoulder.
@@josefschiltz2192 You both had a lot in common, shame you lost touch and your plans been cast asunder. It's very interesting to hear about your illustration though, I'll have to keep a eye out for that! Do you know what the book from Peter Haining was called? 💙
@@TheBlueWhoReview The Doctor Who File and it's at the top of page 222. 'Sepp' is the shortened version of Josef. Those were the days I could still draw. I have an essential tremor now.
@@josefschiltz2192 Thanks for that! I will definitely go and have a look! 💙 Sorry to hear about your essential tremor.
"Who was John Nathan-Turner?" - He started well, but should have left after about 4 years. The show went download slowly under his control; then off the cliff before coming back slightly; by which time it was too late and it was cancelled.
Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts on it! 💙 I agree in an ideal world he should have left and it should have been taken over by someone else!
@@TheBlueWhoReview - He just made too many bad decisions. The Colin Baker version of the Doctor, (See "The Stranger" BBV which would have been better); Season 22, the violence, paper thin stories, form over substance. I was glad when it ended in 89.
@@Phase52012 It's true the more the show went on under his reign the worse I would say it got unfortunately. But that was also due to external factors like Michael Grade and Jonathan Powell.
Man he's like thr Rian Johnson of Star Wars. He was willing to do something different and it caused controversy.
Thank you for commenting! 💙 True, but after all it's what Doctor Who needs every now and again, a different take on it.
thank you for this!
You're Welcome! 💙 Thank you for commenting!
I like John Nathan-Turner
Thank you for commenting! 💙 That's great to hear, it's nice to hear someone say they like him for a change !
@@TheBlueWhoReview I liked him too. It's intriguing that, for a series which encompasses the juxtaposition of far flung realities to such a degree can have such torsions within it's fan base that some versions are just simply loathed. All those comments achieve is not a portrait of the personage or production crew attacked, but more an observation of the critic's own biases. Even the slightly dubious question marks were relatively likeable in the end.
Great vid
Thank you so much! 💙
The brutal truth is that JNT wasn't given an improved budget because he practically destroyed the show over night.
Thank you for commenting! 💙 The ones in charge of the BBC at the time could well have thought that as well which like you said is why he wasn't given a better budget. He wasn't controversial for no reason.
@@TheBlueWhoReview Dr Who was always made with budgetary constraints. The poor decisions JNT made were down to his appalling taste and bad judgement. YHis predecessor like Hinchcliffe and Williams were much more stylish. You only have to go as far as the JNT star spangled title and dreadful electronic music to start with. Hardly up to Bernhard Lodge's masterful work.
@@Quietstormusic I do agree with the budget constraints and his not so tasteful taste. But I do feel his budget just kept getting slashed and slashed more then anyone else's. In terms of his title sequence I do tend to like it but I do see why it's not to everyone's taste especially due to what come before. It's great to get a different perspective though! 💙
Eric saward destroyed drwho, not jnt
Thank you for commenting! 💙 Yes I do agree JNT did not ruin Doctor Who. Would you say it was anything specific Eric did to help end Classic Who or several things?
@@TheBlueWhoReview Only episodes from Eric era in classic who are shit. He didn’t understand this show
