When a general manager tweeted something like "Freedom for Hong Kong", Lebron said he should be more careful about what he says. Why? This is America, not China. We have freedom of speech here. I stopped watching NBA games a couple years ago. They are self-censoring each other now just to appease China. Sickening. Good for the WTA for standing up for what is right.

I used to teach little kids in China. Once a girl came to my classroom, and she was sobbing. Her sister came to me and said that her mom had punished her. And she showed me her sister´s legs, full of bloody scratches, looked like scratches of tree branches, but they were so many. I took the girl to the assistant of the headmaster. And what she said shocked me. She asked the girl - "Oh, I see. So what have you done?" The girl said that she didn´t want to do her math homework. And the assistant just nodded. I was so blown away that I had to go to another room and started crying. The girl's sister came to me and tried to calm me down. After the class, I went to the headmaster and told her about the abuse. She said the mother probably used a tool to make the marks. And that she will talk to the mom. In some time after that, she said that she spoke to the mother and told her that her foreign teacher was so horrified to see this that this could not happen anymore. I hope the kids are fine now, but I doubt that. 😞

The sad reality about how this happens is also directly to do with entrance exams. One of my Ex's sons was being beaten by his tennis teacher. He is an under achiever due to the tiers of schooling that he made it into, when his mother confronted the school she received threats from the coach that she has the power to grade him out of being able to access highschool. They use this to get students around academically passing and also as a base for bribery of the heads of the schools, institutions and training centres. It's gotten worse since they removed English from the curriculum and banned out of school English training centres. Now it's easier to pay somebody for the grades and there's A LOT of students that don't pass the entrance exams as a result. China wants labourers, not intelligent students.
Just to add, and I'm not being sexist. The coach is a woman who works in Chongqing. So this poor dude has some demons to slay if he makes it out of the system. His mother was never abusive towards him. Good luck 🤞
Reminds me of something that happened in the U.S. where I live. A man from the Middle East who lives here -- the family had immigrated shortly before this -- found out his daughter had been going out with her boyfriend unchaperoned and that his wife had allowed it. He stabbed his wife and daughter, though not fatally. When the police showed up, he said, "But she dishonored the family!" He couldn't believe the police would take him away in this circumstance, and he was even more stunned when the prosecutor took the case to a grand jury, which indicted him. Since he had admitted that he had done it, there was guilty plea and a plea bargain, but he did a lot of time.
He deserved to do time for stabbing his wife and daughter. The USA cannot put up with the kind of family abuse practiced in the middle east and south Asia.
@@todddanforth8853 The D.A. we have now even more strict on domestic violence. My wife did poorly in primary school, she has a rare condition where she will fall asleep, the teachers were not happy about that. I’m glad you mentioned the people who like to bring up the problems that our countries have too. The difference is, it’s OK when it’s in China. However, rarely is it looked over when done in other countries
When people abuse children in the US, they go to prison. Even the criminals in prison consider child abusers the worst kind of scum. When people abuse children in China, no one does anything against it because abuse is acceptable in China. What does that say about the culture there?
That's why comparing Chinese and Western statistics are meaningless. In the West it's more likely the acts of abuse will be reported and in most Western nations matters of the court and police are public record so of course per capita there's always going to be more if something that's reported than not reported. I don't know if the people using these so called statistics are just plain stupid or they actually believe there's more abuse in Western nations?
It's not that it's ok when it's in China. It's that other countries don't have the moral, legal, or physical authority to do anything about what's happening in China. It's a lot like, the wife-beater accusing you of merely yelling at your wife. It might be wrong for you to yell at your wife, but where does the wife-beater come off telling you it's wrong?
@@unskillfullymasterfulHonestly….. think maybe that’s one reason why so many young Chinese don’t want to have kids, because of inter generational trauma.
This is sad but true. Tiger parenting is just glorified child abuse. Even when Chinese people immigrate to western countries, many of them still follow the medieval mentality. My mother (a communist and Mao worshipper) constantly told me that girls were worthless, a waste of resources, deserved to die etc. I was sent to classes for 15+ hours a day, 7 days a week. She’d brutally beat me if I didn’t excel at piano or whatever (which is ironic because even if you do excel, you are worthless because you’re a girl, so what is the point?) We are treated like objects, a future retirement fund, a study machine, instead of a child human being with limitations and emotions. I escaped at 18 and haven’t spoken to her in years. But I still have scars and permanent injuries to this day that start to feel sore during rainy days. I was not allowed medical treatment as a child because she feared social services would take me away and she’d get in trouble with the police. Chinese parents constantly believe they have “superior” parenting methods and that the country wouldn’t “understand” their culture. But abuse is NOT culture. Not all Chinese parents are like this, and many younger generations are starting to realize the negative effects of tiger parenting. But I don’t know if we’ll ever see significant change. The worst part is that I knew many girls who experienced even worse, which makes me feel guilty for complaining sometimes (social services back in the day were not concerned about helping the kids of coloured immigrants). I remember one of my neighbours in the ghetto was “murdered” by her father… I believe the poor tiny girl was accidentally beaten to death when his rage went too far one day. But of course the news doesn’t cover the toxic culture aspect and didn’t care about a coloured child being killed back then. And thanks for mentioning those narcissists without empathy who keep claiming that other cultures/countries also have domestic abuse. Trauma isn’t meant to be compared. It’s not a competition. At the end of the day, abuse is wrong and undeserved.
As Winston said here there is domestic abuse everywhere in the world, and in the US and in Europe there are huge figures that do not go reported, HOWEVER, there is no government acceptance of these figures and attempts to sweep them under the rug. That is what happens in China! The cops will not get involved unless there is a local drive to crack down on it, and as domestic violence is not a very visible crime that drive will never happen. Only obvious issues that will gain the local police force face will get that focus, and it is often completely trivial things. In the city where I live there is now a huge effort out into making people bicycle on the correct side of the road! Cops and retirees with red flags standing at various intersections telling people where to go and being arseholes about it. Pointless you might say? Now wait until you get the next bit: only in certain junctions and during rush hour. The rest of the day people will run ebikes against traffic and be as menacing as they absolutely can, but during rush hour they have to obey the arbitrary rules.
Not only is it not accepted by the government, but the general population isn't going to stand by and do nothing if you try to do something like this in public. I know here were I live in the US, a father beating his teenage daughter would likely result in him being knocked out and the "good samaritan" aspect would be those keeping the crowd from beating the guy to death until the police show up.
That was awesome! It would be great if you could get someone from the WTA to be on your China show. The next time the WTA has a major event in my local area I will be buying a ticket.
I´m glad you spoke about this, what´s more, I´m glad another child abuser is behind bars. My grandparents beat the ever living shit out of me when I was in China, and when i spoke to anyone, even my own mother about it, she said it´s just their form of love, or worse, that I made it up.

"tunring a blind eye to something because "its not your buissness" is evil" people often call that a western view and brush it off, but i got that from japanese literature,
Whenever someone pulls the whataboutism card with me, I usually say "We are talking about the problems in __(place name - Canada for example)___ right now. If you want to have a discussion of how this issue is being dealt with in _____(place name - USA)_____ why don't we do that after we finish our discussion about the issue in _____(place name -Canada)____ first". This usually shuts them up because they have no response. It is just an avoidance strategy for them to not address the issue critically.

Punched her, slapped her and kicked her in the face. He's serving a whole whopping 10 days in jail. It's truly disgusting.
Oh man, your ads are just brilliant :) Besides the comment you made, which is very valid, bringing up statistics is pointless. In a culture where DV is accepted as norm, the cases reported to the officials are the exceptions. For every reported case, there's at least 2 more that go unnoticed. I should know, most of eastern Europe has the same problem. Hopefully, we will grow past these primitive behaviours, but in order to do that, we first need to acknowledge them, not deflect and point fingers at others.
Unending respect to you for being a real man. Going to interfere this horrible crime in a foreign country (with different laws) takes great courage! You could have easily been beaten up by 2-3 family members or worse! Thank you for restoring some humanity out there. We need way more of your kind sir.
The root of this problem is more basic, and it exist across the entire World: it is viewing women and children as property. Thus, the abuser has the right to do what they want with their "property". What seperates the countries and cultures, is how the society views or enforces those "property rights". China's society protects the abuser, and thus enforces their "property rights". Yes, western countries use to, and often very recently, also did this. Anyone know "the rule of thumb"?
I agree that it was accepted to a degree in the west too. But the rule of thumb reference is actually not real. Domestic violence has been outlawed in western societies for centuries.
Having authority over someone doesnt mean they are property. You westerners have taken it too far. No responsibility in regards to your own family. But beating a child is something else
Rule of thumb is commonly used in Islamic cultures. It’s the rule that you can beat your wife with a stick, as long as you don’t hit her face, and the stick is not thicker than your thumb. Well, that’s what it means in terms of beatings, anyway. I’m not certain what it means outside of Islamic cultures, and in the Hadith.
@@pommiebears that is symbolic for a wife that is disobedient/defiant... theres no actual beating for wife or kids. If it happens, its due to culture rather than religion

I was an NBA fan for over 30 years. Specifically a Los Angeles Lakers fan. My team currently has Lebron James on it, who has been very sympathetic towards China. When a general manager tweeted something like "Freedom for Hong Kong", Lebron said he should be more careful about what he says. Why? This is America, not China. We have freedom of speech here.

When an old friend of mine was murdered by her husband some years back, this D.A. not only got an indictment for the maximum charge possible for murder, but also for domestic abuse, and she refused to plea-bargain. She was ready to go to trial, and the defendant, who wanted to plead insanity, had had two psychologists tell him they didn't believe he was insane by the law's definition. He had to plead guilty to second degree murder (it was uncertain whether or not it was premeditated) plus the domestic abuse charge. He's been locked up for 11 years now. I'm proud of our D.A.

That was the common punishment, physical abuse, then there is the verbal abuse.
Yep, and two wrongs don't make a right.

Happy to see Dr. Hu again even if it's just an ad. I hope she restarts her videos.

You and wife must have had fun making the commercial.
how can they even talk about domestic violence stats when they dont keep any
Oh man, your ads are just brilliant :)
Besides the comment you made, which is very valid, bringing up statistics is pointless.
Yoooooo, glad to see your wife being part of your video even if it's just for a moment.
The rule of thumb is a myth, sweetheart. Just like socialist prosperity and unicorns.
