Hey thanks for posting this video I have the identical motor. now you pointed out the gear selector I took mine out just to inspect it and look it over but I did not take note of the position that it was at, is that critical.
If it’s not in the correct position it won’t go together or it won’t shift correctly I have struggled with these in the past it’s only a couple different ways it can go. Make sure it goes in the slot and before you put all the bolts back in make sure you can shift from forward to nuetral and reverse with out binding and you should be good👍 thanks for the comment
With Mercury's always put the motor in forward gear when removing the lower unit and when re-assembling to the mid- housing....and turning the prop just a little to align the spline gears above till the lower unit goes all the way up and yes ...you may have to let it back down a little to get those left & right nuts started as this gentleman clearly showed how to do it
Two things, you didn’t say if you replace the metal cup the impeller rides in and did you put any grease in the cup, also whatever you’re using for the lubricant in the lower unit of that motor sure looks thin, what are you using?
I used a quick silver marine gear lubricant I can’t remember the weight right off hand and also I put just a little grease in the cup but I don’t pack it full👍 thanks for the comment!👍
Hey I’m having the same issue and just took out my water pump and need to get a new one. The west marine store doesn’t have a kit. Where did you buy yours? I need to get the whole kit
I’ve owned a few of these and they all give a little trouble but overall not too bad to work on and pretty dependable but just remember there is 2 happy days in the life of a boat owner😂
@@ChristmanGarage yes sir I'm fully aware of those 2 days 😂. Most the reason I've been fishing mostly out a Jon boat with a trolling motor. Don't go far but it goes everytime. But I'm needing to reach some waters I don't trust the Jon boat on. It's a 1436 and I'm a 6 foot 300 pounder. Not comfortable at all for catfishing.
easiest way to do that brother is whenever you want to put the waterpump on you should have put the rubber pump in and then put your housing over agrees your housing and turn your shaft counter-clockwise and it would have went right together and your propeller of been in there the right way I think you put it in there backwards brother have a blessed day you have it counterclockwise when it should have been clockwise have a blessed day and be safe 🙏
Hey man, I took mine down and the tube that goes on that smallest fitting came out with the bottom end. I notice it's just blocked off. Can you tell me what that is my Google fu isn't getting me anywhere
I’m pretty sure that is the line that goes up to the “pee hole” on the side of the engine that pees water when it’s running kind of like a bypass hose it shouldn’t be blocked off??
@@jonboatmorava9115 that’s strange sounds like someone has blocked it off for some reason? It should go up into the top unit and connect to the pee hole
Huge thanks. We did it! Regards from Sweden.
Thanks for the comment👍!
Very helpful video man. But what is that tube you popped off and what does it go to?
It is what the water travels through to get to the engine to cool it.👍
Did you leave it in neutral when disassembling?
What's is the size of the water pump.
That “thunderbolt ignition”on them old Mercury’s is like that cobra! She’ll hit you with the siikkaaaaaa 🐍 got him!
😂😂

Search Amazon my dad purchased this one at our local Marine dealer👍
Why did you drain the oil?
I was changing the oil also
So I'm looking at a 1988 bassmaster boat with one of these for 1700. It runs but no water movement. Should I get it?

This is good advice Iv done it before that way and it’s the easier and fastest way. Just gotta make sure you’re going COUNTER-CLOCKWISE 😂
Do you remember the kit part number for this?
sorry dont know the part number🤔

@@ChristmanGarage there's a fitting at the end that doesn't have a hole in it and it's connected to the small fitting at the front.

@@ChristmanGarage I will be messing with it later in the week I'll figure it out. Thanks 🙏
Maaaaan my half inch rachet piece wont fit in that hole hahaha
