Most helpful video I've seen. I *think* you can rotate the shaft with your hand in order to fit the bottom half/shaft back in instead of bumping the engine and disconnecting the spark plugs. When I did this I was able to fit the shaft in but running the motor the prop wouldn't turn so have to take it off and try again in the spring when it warms up.
Thanks for the video! Your link to Perfect Seal says Mercury stopped making that product. Do you have a suggestion for a replacement? Also, is all 24C grease the same? I see some with different product numbers. Thanks
13mm trim tab anode bolt. 1/4” drive. Also, the alignment for the gear shift is important. You have to stick your hand in there as seen in video, but not mentioned.
Are you turning the driveshaft clock wise when installing the pump housing with impeller? I’m trying to verify that my impeller vanes are facing the correct direction - as I previously did a impeller install, new gaskets, impeller, only one O-ring as it was the only one that fit. So I’m trying to figure out why I didn’t have any water pressure. Oh and when taking it apart again I verified that the impeller was keyed correctly. This time around I did purchase both O-Rings but outside of that everything’s new so not sure where I went wrong besides maybe impeller canes facing the wrong direction but I would figure they would self align?
So then Im going to start out in neutral? Also I have a 2014 300hp verado.. Would this video be similar> Also The complet kik that I bought, doesnt have the tool for the face seal. I was told the it just needs to be lightly seated...Does that sound correct? Your video was a great help..Thanks
I received 5 O'rings with the Impellor Kit for my 200 HP Opti Max. One is the correct size for the water pump outlet and the other one is too small for the larger end. I assume the larger one does not need replacing. It looks ok. The two yellow seals go around the drain screws on the outside. What is the small orange o'ring for? Thanks for the help, great video!
That water pump kit is not only for Mercury outboard lower units; it also services one of MerCruiser’s stern drives. So, discard some of the items if they’re not used in your application. The “orange o-ring” is used in the MerCruiser Alpha I Drive. It is there to seal the gear lube passage way from the upper & lower drive. The upper & lower must be split in order to access the water pump. In the case of your 200hp Outboard that orange o-ring isn’t used.
Excellent video... I do have one side question: Mine is 2011 XL OptiMax, and in the fall we swap the prop for the pump. It has been done few times by the marine shop, however I would like to do it myself and save a few pennies. Do you have such a video, or a link? The manual that came with the pump is not the best, I rather look than read. Thank you, Claudio
Would this proceedure be the same on a 2009 150EFI? Also I note on my engine there is a flexable cable/tube that runs up to a sensor mounted near the flywheel, are you able to advise what it would be?
Thanks for the video. One question: do you have to disconnect the shift linkage on a 2001 Optimax 200hp Saltwater series with XL shaft? I didn't see you mentioned in your video and was wondering if it require on the optimax. Thank you
I have done all these steps exactly as shown and now my water pump does not put water through the block of taking it apart 4 or 5 times and tried again and again still nothing I put a hose straight on to the water tube and water does come out the tell tale no problem. I'm lost
Hi guys, excellent video, thank you! I own a Mercury Verado 200, does anyone know if there are any major differences between the two? Was thinking of using this video as a guide/tutorial. Any experiences/advice on the Verado?
did that one leak? at 5:30 the impeller sucked the upper gasket up under itself while turning to seat the housing... and it very well could have not made it back to into position to seal.. take a look at it..
This is very common. The impeller is actually larger in diameter than the pump body housing UNTIL you get the impeller installed into the housing. Therefore the impeller tends to grab the gasket as you are pushing the pump body downward. However since you are turning the drive shaft as you are pushing the pump body into place, as soon as you the impeller gets forced into position it allows the gasket to lay back down flat into position. We did in fact verify this as it was going back together. That is a very observant point you bring up though.
Eddie, The water pump replacement kit used in the video is Part Number 47-43026Q06. That kit comes will all new gaskets and wear plate as well as the impeller, new key way and seals. It does not come with a new impeller housing but those typically do not need replaced unless the housing has been damaged in some way. Its recommended to replace all of the gaskets bellow and above the wear plate and the impeller every 3 years or 300 hours whichever comes first and more often if overheating occurs or reduced water pressure is noted.
+Doha Man That. Is really difficult to answer because there are many factors that can affect this. The recommendation stated in the manual is to check it annually and possibly replace it every other year. Therefore based on that the life expectancy could be anywhere from 1 to 2 years or we've seen them last as much as five years.
hi there, when i try to install the gear case it stops with a couple inches left to go. i've tried everything but it just won't go back in. its a '73 merc 150. any help is appreciated.
What about the shift rod ? Don't think it was mentioned during the video. It's just as important as the drives shaft cause it doesn't fall or slide into place. So if the engine is started of course it's going to pump the water out cause the drives haft turns the waterpump, but if someone happens not to check to see if it shifts into gear till they get to their 3 day lake vacation destination their gonna be very disappointed and have to drop the lower unit all over again. And the shift rod is not a one man task.
nice video just remember to put a bead of caulking behind the pump housing on lower unit to prevent exhaust and water to get back in before you reinstall lower unit.
+Branden Collier For a 4-stroke Verado you must drain the engine oil before removing the lower unit for any reason or else it will drain itself when you remove the lower unit. The drain screw is located on the port side near the ventilation fin on the lower unit. Our video is for a Mercury Optimax 200 hp 2-Stroke. Other than the mess I’m sure was made… replace the oil filter, put fresh oil in it, install the lower unit and you’re good to go.
im also having an issue with mine i replaced everything last year but wasnt happy with the water flow at pee whole at idol it will only come out in spurts very low pressure how ever at higher RPM it flows great
@@brucemunro3342 Yes there's a pop off valve in my case its on the side of the motor has nothing to do with the water pump how ever it controls water pressure Mine looked good and a service tec though it was ok when i took it to him but i went ahead and replaced it made a big difference
+Michael Read I think it is safe to say that the shift shaft didn’t get lined up correctly. You will have to drop the lower unit and pay close attention to the shift shaft coupling when reinstalling. You can also tighten one or two nuts then test (not running) to make sure it is shifting correctly.

I don't think I'll ever own an alignment pin let alone a fancy bench like that.. manufacturers need to start building impellers out of new better quality advanced materials! What a sham. They know the average boater is going to want to make sure their motor runs before they put it in the water. They know this is going to wear out their garbage last Millennium technology impeller and they know that service technicians are going to laugh all the way to the bank
+edgu71eg Mercury does offer just the impeller but it really depends on the condition of the housing and wear plate. I'd say 95% of people replace the entire kit vs just the impeller.
I took of my lower unit for a 2009 mercury efi 4stroke, and maybe a little over a half quart of motor oil leaked from where the top of the drive shaft goes in, is that normal?
Good job colleagues. Bravo

Great video! Informative, straight forward and to the point. Thanks it will save me time and effort changing the impeller on a 200 EFI.
Very well done video. No wasted words. Very clear

My drive shaft doesn’t spin freely like that, does the bearing housing need to be torqued down first? Or is my forward gear seized up?
did you get that seal on good at 5:28 to 5:30 looks like the seal just pinched up???
Satber Hoxhaj I saw the same thing. The seal folded inward
Good eye, looks like they didn't notice that!
Well spotted. Another thing to look out for when putting it back together.
great explanation on doing the impeller...I'm allover it now

when you have closed the lid of the water pump the gasket has risen and surely you have mounted it badly as you can see at 5:29
If you look REALLY closely , you will see that that was the IMPELLER blade jumping into place inside the cup

Does the throttle have to be. Fully open?
Very informative, is there a special torque wrench used to torque the lower unit to 55 lb
+Jesse Gallet You sometimes have to use the correct crowfoot in junction with your torque wrench.

What size threads are on the line up pins?
Why mercury does not have a impeller repair kit for this model? Is recommended to replace the complete water pump kit or just the impeller?

also will I lose my engine oil when I drop the lower end of my 2014 300hp verado four stroke to replace water pump? Thanks Again
I have a 2010 175 Pro XS Is there any difference between it and this one ?
Also looking at your site I don't see a kit only individual parts.

It should be the same. What is your email and I will confirm and find you a link to the water pump kit?
Very nice video. Thanks.
Thanks for your feedback. We are glad the video is helpful!

since you are an expert
what is the live expectancy of the brand new water pump impeller in the extremely salty water ?
thks

+DroneXFun I The big three things you should check are 1) splines on the driveshaft 2) water pump tube 3) shift coupler
did anyone notice when he installed the impeller the gasket was pulled from its location he never corrected it
I cringed at that...
