Excellent detailed video.Thank you so much .I just finished mine today. When it came time to put the impeller in I used a tie wrap or zip tie.I got it halfway in then cut the tie.Worked like a champ.I also changed the gear oil. Thanks again!
Hey guys... thanks for the effort here. I have a 45hp that I have to do the same thing to. Not looking forward to replacing the inlet housing way up in the engine. They don't make them any more so I had to pay $45 to get an aftermarket... robbery! NLA Marine sells them. Anyway, thanks again for your work; you guys are a great team.
Glad you fixed it. Parts are getting harder to find on the older motors...buy the parts when you find them. Fix it yourself and save that money! Keith 2guys how2
For future impeller replacement, you install the impeller on to the shaft with the key way, grease the cup, then install the housing over the drive shaft down to the impeller. Then you twist the drive shaft clockwise while pushing down on the impeller housing and the impeller will turn itself into the housing. It takes ten seconds.
Great video guys. I just bought the same motor and I'm having an issue with the overheat alarm. The alarm starts going off as soon as I turn the key. This started on my last test ride. Do you know if this motor has a thermostat? If it does, I cant find it? Appreciate the video about the impeller.
I would check the temp sensor, screwed into head. Check wires and check to see if head is clogged with dry deposits of salt, etc. Most likely the sensor is bad. Keith 2guys how2
No, problem...we ordered our part from a boat place online..Just go online and type in those part numbers, I gave you. Keep looking..type mercury OEM..those numbers and you will find them. Keith 2guys how2
Thanks, its long... but, we wanted to show everything to everyone...not cut out the hard stuff...if you watch this video, you should be able to fix your boat motor and any boat motor. Thanks !. Keith 2guys how2
I got an old 50 hp Mercury thats leaking water from top of the pick up tube. Pick up tube is snug and will not come out. Anybody know how to fix that.? Do you have to removes upper housing to get to it?
Hey fellas, great video! Hoping you could help me out. I need to do this exact repair on the same motor. Dropped the lower unit to check impeller and water pump. I discovered the fitting with the two 8mm bolts that holds the tube under the power head must have rotted, basically in pieces. I haven’t found those parts on any diagrams yet. Could you tell me what those parts are called or where to possible find them? I may try your approach since the mechanics only option is to pull the power head and they won’t even consider the job for a few months. Thanks in advance! - Trey

Double check your linkage to your shift cable. Make sure it is set exactly as it was if you loosened it. If you move the shift cable..you should see it go completely forward and completely in reverse. You can spin the prop with motor off..reverse should lock in and forward should lock in. Keith 2guys how2
I have the same motor and rebuilt the water pump but it still will not pee. I took it apart to check it but didn’t see anything wrong. What else could I do?
If it won't spit water..the seal on the metal pick up tube..could be bad..if you follow the pick up tube up to the bottom of motor..there is a seal there that leaked and let's air in..which makes the lower water pump not able to push water to top motor block. You can blow air into the piss hole on motor..check for leaks on the rubber hose and listen for air leaks from the bottom of motor, where the pick up tube seal is located.. Make sure the impeller is installed correctly, with assembly grease, too. We did this watet pump and pick up tube seal on this video Mercury 35..it had the same problem. Keith 2guys how2
Hi quick question for you I have the same engine before you took the lower end off did you have it in neutral ? Or reverse ? I Have to change my impeller and I’m worried about disassembly and putting it back together and not lining up
Thanks, for watching. On this unit I don't recall us putting it in gear. Neutral should be fine and go back together the same way. Just keep note and take pictures of things as you go. Just slow and steady and keep notes and pictures. Watch our video to help you and ask us any questions you may have. Keith 2Guys How2
Thanks for getting back to me and thanks for your help I will be tackling this project tomorrow.I pulled the lower inlet covers last night and found a small pile of rubber bits do you think that is my remaining impeller ?
I'm sure they are from that dry rotted impeller. You can use compressed air and blow out all debris..the water should flush it out as well..but when you install the impeller, make sure everything is clean and installed correctly. USE SOME WATER GASKET PLUMBING GREASE..FOR WATER FILTER O RINGS.. TO LUBE THAT IMPELLER AT INSTALL. HELPS WHEN FIRST DRY START. Keith...2Guys How2
@@tonywyatt9976 I will check my parts lost...we bought those gaskets from a place online. When I find the company, I will message you the name. Cromwell... or something like that.
You have to make sure the pick up tube is lined up to fit in the upper and lower seal...depending on if your pick up tube came out with the lower end. If the main pick up tube stayed up inside coming from top motor...make sure the lower part of pick up tube goes into the lower end seal correctly. Be patient and if the pick up tube is lined up correctly..then try to turn the propeller drive shaft slowly so it lines up to drop into top engine spline receiver. Be patient and it will go back together flat with no gaps. Keith 2guys how2

Hi Keith its Joe again so I have the lower end off finally got into the water pump impeller cover and the only thing left is the rubber around the shaft so how do I know how to bend the new impeller so it works correctly ?? Thanks
Hey, joe...the find on the impeller should face clockwise..turn the new impeller counter clockwise..spin to the left and it will make fins face clockwise...the impeller spins to the left..so, spin impeller to the left and push in gently...use a rubber band to hold fins down and install..then remove the rubber band...gross everything. Keith 2 Guys How2
Yeah, always a good idea to check first. That way you can fix everything needed, before you put everything back together. Thanks for watching. Keith 2guys how2
The impeller can be installed correctly..but, if that water pick up tube gasket is bad..it will draw air instead of water. We show where it is at the end of this video..this 35 merc was doing the same thing. I would look into the pick up tube gasket. Keith 2guys how2
If you blow compressed air into the water pick up tube, where it comes out of the motor...listen to hear if the air is coming out from somewhere other then the bottom impeller housing. This will let you know if there is a leak.
Thanks, for watching ...our videos drag on, sometimes...but, I purposely make them long for the details...those are the hardest things to learn or fix. So, I try to show exactly what we go through to get the fix done and done right.
