- I recently posted a review and comparison of the new DJI RS3 Mini and the Zhiyun M3, and I got this question from @justinkd :
"Awesome video bro. Love the way you compared them with the oldschool gaming 😂👌🏼 but now id like some help. I'm having a hard time deciding between these two. The main thing I've been having trouble deciding between is that.. with the M3, a big selling point they make on it is you're able to use a camera and/or phone with it.
Would you say I'm able to do this aswell with the DJI mini aswell by adding an attachment of a phone holder on it or something like that?"

I was also curious on using this for phones. The osmo series always seems like the motors are too weak and not smooth - thanks for testing/showing this
Yeah. This is still a little bouncy because there isn’t enough weight for the motors to push against, but it will work. Hope that helps!

Dude - my RS3 Mini came in way earlier than expected and holy crap! It's eons better than the M3 mini in my opinion! I'm so glad I returned the M3. Everything from the build quality, balancing experience, UI, and features. The M3 isn't a bad gimbal but DJI knocked this one out of the park!

In fact i use my DJI RS3 mini with my Sony Xperia Pro i handphone (with Sony Vlogging monitor) and attached a Rode videomic go 2. It's like an all in one set up when i go for a short family trip. It's a small, convenient and easy set up to bring around and can do everything. 👍👍

I'd like to utilize 'the force'. I could see where it could be placed on a cheap tripod and be use as a fluid pan head.
Yeah, that’s definitely doable if you have a steady enough hand. I’ve also done it to film myself and get a motion shot by holding my phone down by my waist just off camera.

Sorry, I’m not quite getting what you’re saying… What do you mean by using it with a phone and a DSLR at the same time? Are you talking about stacking them to get video from both, or controlling the gimbal with a camera on it, or something else?

I don't understand, you made a great video. and still different questions come to you for at least since 3 months. which means you gotta make another video to relief all of us who has questions on our minds.. like should we choose this over an option like smooth 5s or dji 6.. pros & cons.. thank you anyway bc you are the only one on planet who mentioned we can use rs 3 mini with phone. But a lot of points are lacking! :)
For example I did choose rs 3 mini, and bought a counter weight for it, I still dont know whether I should get another little tool to integrate it. What I mean is, some of us really don't have any clue before we buy the product.

I don’t have lenses and filters for my phone to test it for you, but I would assume that extra weight on a phone would actually help it be more stable a tiny bit.

I dont understand, dji says the rs3 isnt able to be use with mobile but i see everyone doing it but how do we use it? Do we need to connect with bluetooth or manual control with the phone? Would you do a video how to operate & connect with phone? Cuz this is the most feq question arnd. Please sir?
It doesn’t connect with a phone via Bluetooth or USB, you’ll have to hit record manually and only use the gimbal for stabilization.

No, the gimbal holds the phone up, but that’s about it… no real functionality in the buttons or tracking.
Do you think it would work well with a GoPro Hero 11 action camera?
Hey Bob, thanks for commenting. I’m sure it would work with a GoPro, because it works well enough with nothing in it at all. Honestly though, I don’t know that it would be worth it, because the Hypersmooth is so good on GoPros now. I might have to shoot a short exploring this :)

A youtuber named TerryWarfield did a review of the RS3 mini using a Panasonic S5 he connected them by usb-c I believe and with no other device he got active tracking, he said that was due the inbody active tracking of the mini and the s5 sharing giroscopic and autofocus data, I wonder if that works with an iphone, maybe there is an app that allow the phone to send the data or something to the gimbal?
Maybe they’ll come out with something later, but I couldn’t even get the gimbal record button to control the iPhone over usb or Bluetooth.
is there an option for tracking loke inst360, hohewm isteady m6 or DJI OSMO M6 and their apps for settings ?
I’ve heard that some of the Panasonic cameras can use Active Track with this gimbal, but I personally haven’t used them. Outside of those cameras, it’s not possible.

It really depends on the phone, but I would suggest getting a phone specific gimbal if you plan to use one a lot.

I’m haven’t found a way to get the gimbal to trigger recording on the phone. You’d have to get a phone-specific gimbal to get that functionality.

On mine, I had to mount the base plate hanging off the front a little bit to get it to balance right. You can also try putting a weigh on the bottom arm to balance it out better if needed:

I would think so. The biggest issue with phones is a lack of weight, so the cage would probably help.

Here's the thing for me: I have the rs3 mini and an Iphone 12 Pro Max. I can get it to work but the motors keep failing if I try to stabilize it resting on the table, if I do it holding it in the air it works, but I can feel and hear the motors working to compensate for my MAIN problem: I can't get it to balance the right way on the third adjustment (the one that's closest to the phone/camera), because obviously the camera doesn't heave an actual lens weighing it forward. Does it make sense? All other axis work, but the last one won't cause the cellphone is already maxed out to the back, but still don't stabilize it for lack of front weight.

I was able to make it work by moving that arm as far forward as possible, and then also having the base plate as far forward as possible - even hanging off by a little bit if necessary. If that doesn’t work, Smallrig makes clamp on weights that can help you balance it.

Vertical is possible, but didn’t work as well as horizontal. If you’re wanting to do a lot of vertical, I would probably stick with a phone specific one like this: amzn.to/3tWkIZr

You have to find a Jedi, become a Patawan, and devote your life to learning the force.
Jk, you just open the Ronin app, click Create, click Force Mobile, and then click the red record button and it’ll use the accelerometer in your phone to move the gimbal.

The M2S is £160. The RS3 mini is £340. I have a ZVE10. Is it worth buying the RS3 for my ZVE10 or go for the cheaper option?
I would say that the M2S is more than enough for a ZVE10 with the small combo lens and nothing else.
If you have a cage, microphone, Arca Swiss mount, or a larger lens, you’ll need the DJI. Overall, the RS3 Mini is the superior gimbal, but it might be overkill if you only use a stock ZVE10.

Do all versions of the Ronin RS3 line do the mimicked phone movement? Where you moved the one phone to move the gimbal?
Yeah, it’s called “Force Mobile” and all of the RS3 line do it. Actually, I’m pretty sure every DJI gimbal back to the Raven S all do it.

No, the Bluetooth record button doesn’t even work with a phone. I would stick with an Osmo mobile if you plan to use a phone a lot, but the RS3 Mini will work in a pinch.

Creating is more fun than having something
Anytime I spend money on things like this, I ask myself which is more likely to help me make money in the future. If you can use the gimbal to get work making videos, do that. If the desk increases your productivity, do that. If the watch gives you the confidence to do better, do that.

I had gotten the zhiyum crane m3, but none of the buttons work with the iPhone. So I just got the Zhiyun Smooth 5S Gimbal. It’s just I really like that DJI mini, but thank you for replying.

@@YaleWall So it's just a cold shoe mount for the phone onto the gimbal? I was trying to figure out what mounting options there were. I'm new to videography, and couldn't tell exactly which hunting system was available. I would potentially use a Rode Wireless Pro Receiver, and Aperture MC light both cold shoe mounted along side the iPhone 15 Pro Max when released. The smaller Osmo Mobile gimbals aren't up to par to use with the Max devices and a case with Moment Tele Lens. and these other attachments. This Ronin seems legit. Thoughts?

I honestly don’t know because I don’t use a phone cage, but I find that the biggest issue is the phone not weighing enough, so I think it might help.

As far as the vertical goes, I’m almost positive it would work because the vertical mode on the gimbal is pretty stable. Worst case scenario, you might need to add a bit of weight with something like this: amzn.to/43clJbG

@@YaleWall I have an FX30 (for long form) and a ZVE1 (for low light, vlogging). But I still shoot on my cell as well, simply because it's always with me and it takes great video in good light (yeah, it has drawbacks, but I'd rather get good-ish impromptu footage rather than think to myself "damn, wish I brought a camera with a world class sensor in it, we'll just let this moment go I guess".
@@gabriel-mckee okay, that makes sense. The RS3 mini might be a good idea then, because it’ll handle all 3 of those easily. I use it with my ZV-e1 and a7c all the time, and it’ll even handle my a9iii with a 16-35 gm ii.
There’s also not much need for tracking in my opinion… If you have a steady hand, you can get a better shot than the active track can get you.

Does anyone know if you can pair it to iPhone with blu tooth?
I don't think so... I just tried it so I could give you a real answer, and it doesn't seem be be working. My phone is able to see the bluetooth signal from the gimbal, and it is even able to connect to it, but the screen never shows the phone as an option, and even after connecting, the record button doesn't seem to do anything.
I also tried connecting it straight via lighting / usb to the gimbal, and there was no luck there either. You'll probably need to get a phone specific gimbal if you need record button functionality.

Sorry it took me a while to respond… I had to track down an RS3 to try it. Yes, it did work better than I expected it to, but it definitely wasn’t perfect. It shook a bit and got of balance, but it did work more or less. If you added weight, it would work well.

There’s no tracking on this gimbal with a phone or a camera. You’d have to get this one for tracking: amzn.to/3mdXVEz
DJI always make the same design mistakes. Oversized mounting clamps for the camera. There is no reason it has to be this tall. Just make it flat and trow in a simple arca swiss clamp
The reason it is so tall is so you can carry it vertically from the top. It has to be tall to clear the top of the camera. That’s actually one of my favorite parts of it.

@@OneShotFilmmaker ohhh, vertical! Your comment said “virtual.” Yeah, vertical works but it’s a little shakier. I would suggest a dedicated phone gimbal if you want to do vertical.
@@YaleWall sorry about that. Meant to say vertical…. The thing I don’t like about phone gimbal is it only has one axle the gimbal you’re talking about has three. It’s just stronger for iPhone 15 Pro Max.
