This video shows the backpacking and hiking gear you ditch or toss out. It also has the backpacking gear and hiking gear you should bring on trail instead. - Розваги
I’ve never understood why hikers need their spoons to fold- it’s a spoon and you can’t find a spot in your pack without being able to fold it 😂
I think so it fits in the pot....for storage and convenience when eating.
It is designed for and marketed to people who suffer from foldaphelia, a horrible, crippling personality disorder that especially affects theater employees whose job it is to fold up seats after each movie has played.
If you have a friend with foldaphelia, do them a solid and stage an intervention. And for God's sake, make sure there are no folding chairs in the room when you do.
@@consciousmachine4138 ok so you are not rifling through everything to find it! But they are so bad! My pot is taller so mine fits right in the sack with my pot
@@chriseidam7319 🤣🤣🤣
@@chriseidam7319 need someone with foldaphelia to come over on laundry day!
I recently upgraded my stanely pot with a titanium pot. The weight savings are great, but there's something special about the stanley. If I'm not hiking a bunch of miles I'll always carry the stanley, pack weight be damned
Sounds great, Kevin
The one benefit of stainless steel is if you’re actually cooking, rather than just boiling water. The thicker metal means that it’s a lot harder to burn your meal than when using titanium or thin aluminum pots.
I’m not sure if my other comment will post because I tried to share a link so I’ll repeat the text of it here. I’ve never had the BeFree love affair that others seem to have. I use the Sawyer Squeeze and the Platypus QuickDraw. The added benefit of Sawyer is their philanthropy. And, yes, the Squeeze lacks a cover for the dirty end but I was able to make one. Take a big plastic pop bottle (2 litre size here in Canada) and cut off the neck just above where it widens to the shoulders of the bottle. Now force the bottle’s cap onto the cut end of the neck. The threaded end of the neck can then be screwed perfectly into the dirty end of the Squeeze. I tried to share a link to photos in my other comment but not sure if it will post.
Both are great :D
I've never been a fan of the small pots. Bigger pots lets you heat up enough water to rehydrate your meal and have a hot beverage at the same time. It's also there if your other water treatment failed. I do have more cook sets than I need, but I don't see the Stanley as being so deficient to require upgrading. Plus the Stanley can sit in a fire whereas the non-stick in the MSR will cook off at higher temps.
I also treat my stoves with the same respect I give a knife. Do that, and the traumatic alcohol stove incidents go away.
Occasionally, I might have to say "Dude, watch out for my stove. Can't you see I'm cooking?", but most people will understand that stepping on someone else's dinner isn't something they should be doing.
I've used all sorts of spoons and sporks ranging from folding titanium to Wendy's plastic to bamboo. A few years ago, it occurred to me that the 95 cent stainless steel table spoon at Walmart has a long handle, is durable and will have people mock you around dinner time. If the difference in weight between a stainless spoon and a titanium spoon is an issue, you might want to see a physical therapist.
I carry hydration bags when I need more water capacity, not to replace a water bottle. If you want to mix something in that will goo up your hydration bag, just mix it in your water bottle. A little known feature about water is that it can be transferred from one container to another.
I did discover another way to retain electrolytes. I buy salt that has sodium, potassium and magnesium in it. Five bucks worth of Real Salt is enough to replace about one hundred bucks worth of electrolyte mix, plus you can use it on your food.
Totally makes sense :D
Agree about the Stanley. I have two different ones that I just keep going back to. Durable and easy to clean.
Good point about the salt.
Am I the only one who uses chopsticks and a regular long handled teaspoon on trail? 😂 I love my Stanley pot but not the big one, but the one with 2 nesting cups, (but I ditch one of the cups unless I’m camping with the hubby).
Haven't taken chopsticks before :)
Completely agree about mummy pads. I too just upgraded from an Etherlight XT large to a Tensor Insulated large wide and its great.
Love it
Ty so much for the lmnt drink mix idea. I'm hiking the FHT this summer and didn't want the extra sugar. Thus is perfect! I will order from ur site.
My pleasure :D Thank you
It’s funny. I’m from Texas so this whole trend of buying clothes that dry quickly and insulate is foreign to me. More often than not, I’m dunking my shirts and hats in water to keep me cool. 😂
From Texas also. I switched out bandannas, of all things, for that very reason. The cheap dollar store ones are synthetic and dry out too quick. I'm gonna keep my base layers synthetic though. I've gotten chilled a few times on some night hikes in sweaty clothes, so I can definitely see the importance of keeping dry.
@@DollyTheLlama haha yeah actually I always bring a bandanna with me as well.
I say all this at a time when our weather decided to go ballistic, but yeah, keeping warm isn’t often a challenge.
I knew I’d been in the desert too long when it would be 100 during the day wearing 30 pounds of Army crap, and be fine, but 60 at night I froze my ass off. 😂😂

The biggest downside of alcohol stoves and wood burning stoves is there are a lot of trails where they are banned. The Colorado Trail, for instance, they are banned most years because of fire hazard potential. Be sure you check before you hike.
Very true
Love your vids!!! thanks for sharing. Peach
My pleasure :D
Love my Gram weenie pro alcohol stove, my bud mocks me for it but I aint in a rush to get my food going. By the time my water is boiled and breakfast re-hydrated I typically have camp taken down and ready to go.
That makes sense to me
Good suggestions! I toss & turn at night so like a larger mattress. 😆 I started with an alcohol stove but ditched it pretty quickly for the reasons you gave. I went with s firebox stove because I like wood burning stove but it can still work well with canister stove & alcohol stoves. I usually have the single Stanley cook kit nested in a cup for my kit. Really good video! Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate the love :D
Putting your sawyer in your backpack in cold weather is a great tip... thx
My pleasure
Great video Jeremiah! I have no use for alcohol stoves or folding utensils. I have about 4 large bins of crap I should ditch. 👍😎
Throw them in the trash lol
I’ve also given up on short spoons, folding spoons, whatever. I love the TiTo titanium spoons and forks because they come in beautiful colours, pink, blue, yellow, rainbow. Justin Outdoors finds that they make his food taste better and make his pack drastically lighter via their magical powers. They’re available on Amazon or Ali Express with the option to buy spoon or fork or both together.
Not a fan of them either
That GSI Pinnacle Soloist is an incredible piece of kit - I took it on a 380km walk through the arctic circle late last year. The hard anodised aluminium is actually nonstick and super easy to clean after cooking even the sauciest food...
I absolutely love it
I've been using an Evernew aluminum pot set I bought in 1980. I mostly just use the medium pot, which holds my Esbit clone of the mini Trangia spirit burner and other stove/cook bits.. I use the Esbit triangular stove/pot stand which stores flat. It is also a wind shield. The stand will also take the Esbit fuel cubes. The Trangia design is not prone to spurting fuel if tipped and the stand makes it very stable.
Are the Esbit cubes stinky? How do you carry them?
When hiking in the west you often have long stretches between water and need more than one or two bottles.
Good info
I’m ditching the Be Free too. It worked great but once it dried, I couldn’t get it to work well again. Takes WAY too long to get a liter of filtered water. Now I’m back to the Sawyer. 🦑
I’ll add that I had a purge of gear about 4 years ago. Probably need to do it again.
Trash can awaits lol
You have to soak the filter before your trip. Put it in water for an hour or two before you start hiking, or just fill up the bottle which will submerge the filter. I know it’s an extra step you shouldn’t have to take, but the flow rate is as good as new if you take this step.
My experience with Polartex beenied is that they don't do well in the wind. I found a Mountain Hardware Polartex beenied lined with nylon. Wind resistant and lighter than two layers of Polartec.
Might need the wind protection too
I see beanies as low efficiency. I've been using a Patagonia balaclava since 2005. It rolls up into a beanie for cool temps but also goes down for nose, neck and ear coverage for colder weather or sleep. A wool one would be nice.
Balaclavas are awesome! I think they work great, but aren't really necessary in the warm winters I get in KY
I just chucked my BeFree in the garbage (it froze and honestly I was just tired of dealing with it) and went back to platypus gravity filter (I've got one for filling my hydration bladder (so I don't have to remove it from my pack) and one for camp/cooking. I used the Sea to Summit long handled spoon but the finish started coming off - so I ditched that and started using the polished bowl long handled spoon by Toaks. Totally agree with the wide/long pads ... it's just so nice to have that extra room especially if you toss and turn alot. Lately, I've switched to using the MSR Windburner stove and absolutely love it ... I don't love the weight but the convenience is fantastic!
Leave the BeFree in the trash
Just subscribed to a new channel I really like.
Nice realistic reviews.
Btw the holes in the lids are for the steam to come out when you boil your water. But can be used for draining as well. :)
Appreciate the info and welcome to the channel :D
ive nvr packed so light that i needed to replace my two 25yo whisper lites ..but I do luv window shopping.
It is fun
Can't find gas canister in many countries(eg northern patagonia), alcohol only. Trail Designs 12-10 stove with Toaks windscreen is very stable. Agreed on the rest
That makes sense. I suppose it's not really applicable to you
I love my Be Free. I presoak it before a hike if it's been sitting for a while. This seems to help restore the flow. I also like my MSR folding spork. I've had it for several years and it works fine. My dog chewed the tines off, but it still works fine.
It was frustrating for me to have to presoak it, but that's what they said. Needed to be soaked so it would have a good flow rate on trail
Yep, made the mistake once … never again. Did not pre soak and had no flow at all. Thankfully it was a short overnight.
How long are you supposed to do this pre soak? (is that just put it in the water for a while pre trip?)
@@andycjohnston If I know I'm hiking the next day, I'll just fill up the BeFree bag the nite before and let it sit overnite. You can also just soak it for a couple of hours and that works too. My thought is just that I have to take water anyway, why not make the Be Free bag one of my 'bottles'. It's not a big deal really. I love the Be Free and never cared for Sawyer.
@@dirtribbonaddiction Oh yeah! 🤣 Just fill up the bladder!! Man...that's so obvs now that you've said it!
Yeah, I usually carry 2 water bottles, with the Katadyn in the pack, but I've got a few dry walks planned where I'll definitely need the extra Katadyn bladder full. (probably plus another litre on top of that too!)
That's a super easy thing to do, but great to know as well. Thanks for the info man, much appreciated.
I buy any and all camping gear. Some people collect cars. I collect camping gear. I have a room just with my camping gear in. It's all organized, my family calls the room a store. Everything is labeled and put onto peg board or shelves.
I feel that
I'm ditching most of the pillows I've tried. I'm also going to ditch my Fortius 2P tent for the Durstan Xmid 2P. Nice video.
Love my x-mid!
@@hikingmovie I've got the Xmid 1P. I don't like the Fortius single wall so I'm going back to what I like.
I think both of those are great tents
inflatable pillows suck..I bought a small real pillow instead. The fortius doesn't get a lot of good reviews, and outdoor vitals doesn't do a lot of marketing for it. You'll love the Durston. The only downside is the large footprint.
I have followed and commented with you for quite a few years so here goes! Wife’s don’t bum. We might borrow, we might take, but we don’t bum. You’ll just have to forgive me on that one cause I’m sure you sweetheart will agree. Have a great day.
This granny loves hiking!!!
lol thanks for comment. Love it 😃
And with the flat cat gear windscreen mod for the BRS stove it will out perform a jetboil. Great video!
Thank you :D The BRS is awesome
I've got the BRS stove and love it, but I was gifted one of those beer can alcohol stoves and still need to try it out. I worry about the stability of both the stove and the pot on top of it, but it'd be nice to make coffee in the woods and keep the whole peace and quiet thing going on. As far as the BeFree goes, if you haven't used it for a while, just put some water in it and let it soak for about half an hour or so before you try to filter anything and it works just fine. That said, I've heard that Sawyer is doing a lot for helping third world countries get clean water so they are great to support as well.
It's a great little stove.
How do you get grill searing marks from cooking a steak in a skillet?
Lol sadly I don't
The GSI product is also great for washing rice.
That would be a great use :D
I've got the Lifestraw Flex on my list to purchase and start taking. Heavy metals are a problem where I live and hike, and the Flex is supposed to handle them. Fortunately, I can use it like the Sawyer that I'm used to.
Sounds like a good choice on that one
You might look at the GRAYL water filter. I believe it removes heavy metals. I have two of them, one small, one large. Very happy with them.
I wonder if you rotate the pad if it would work?
Could be. I'm not sure
Outstanding
Thank you :D
Did you have paint thinner or denatured alcohol in there?
Denatured alcohol from Walmart
I completely agree on the GSI soloist pot. Had mine for maybe 15 years now and its still perfect for my use, except that crappy spork of course, lol. I also use the same MSR pocket rocket stove. The isobutane fuel is far superior to alcohol at higher elevations, as well as lower temperatures. As far as water filtration, I would recomend something with a pump and the ability to separate your container further from the source in order to prevent contaminating the filtered end. Katadyn, MSR, and others have good options worth the investment, IMHO. Cheers! :-)
Absolutely love it
+ one for the GSI cook set
Love it
Kojin style alcohol stove is spill proof. You can make it yourself with carbon felt or buy from cottage gear manufacturers. Also more eco than canisters.
Look into it I have a vid of the two I have on my channel.
I also swear by my buff merino wool beanie. Keeps you warm even when wet.
Great stuff!
For a beanie, I use a marine surplus polar TEC beanie. Easily found, cheap, and incredibly light.
Sounds awesome :D
Fleece military style beanies from Condor Outdoors are cheap and warm.
LMNT actually works and tastes great !!
Love them

Welcome to the adventure :D
Great video Jeremiah! Love that beanie with polartec. Crow
Thanks, Crow :D
Don't think you were using or comparing to an actual Stanley cook pot. The Stanley Adventure Two Cup Set (the size most likely to be used backpacking) has a lid, a similar locking handle to the GSI, and it has volume markings in the pot.
The Stanley without the cups is only 220g. I don't have the GSI, but someone on the questions section of the Amazon listing says the pot itself weighs 200g and the lid weighs 10g. So, that just does not seem like an obvious swap.
Ditching the spoon you say to ditch leaves the cup. it is nice that it fits inside and the pot lid can fit on it. The cups that come with the Stanley are not that great (in many people's opinion) but one could buy the Stanley and a preferred cup (popular to use a Sea-to-Summit X-Cup that fits inside or a metal camp cup that fits outside around the bottom) as replacements for the cups and it would still be cheaper than the GSI but still possibly around the same weight. Of course, the GSI has a larger volume (so that is a pro for GSI if you need to cook with that much volume at once) which is probably why the weight ends up about the same. But, the GSI seems to be less durable with aluminum and a non-stick coating. The non-stick might be helpful if you're doing more than boiling water, but it can get scratched and probably shouldn't cook on an open fire (but could with the Stanley if you ended up needing to like if you ran out of fuel or something).
Switching to a similar sized titanium pot does make sense. They are pretty much equal (even in price if you find it on AliExpress or similar sites like you mentioned) but with weight savings.
Good info 😊
Aw…don’t kill the Platypus… Love LMNT, time for a refill 😊
Lol I still like Platypus
I haven't confirmed this, so take it with a grain of salt, literally lol
I've heard it said from personal trainers and some others that electrolyte mixes, such as Gatorade, don't replace what you lost in sweat, for if it did your drink would be so salty it's unpalatable. So here's what they recommend, and what I recommend as well after doing it a few times and seeing great results. Take half a teaspoon, about 1000mg of salt, and drink it down with a few swigs of water. Do that once or a few times. It works wonders and actually replaces your electrolytes. Plus there's no sugar, no artificial cancer causing sweeteners, no food dyes, etc. etc. etc. Just pure electrolytes and salt. It's a hell of lot cheaper and it's a lot faster than needing to drink a liter of water for just 1000mg of salt with those LMNT packs or Gatorade. You can do 2000mg of salt with just 12oz of water, which is great when you're really sweating, like in our southern summers.
That makes sense to me. I really like the convenience of just tearing open a pack and pouring it in with different flavors. I think it is just what you are willing to pay for vs not. No wrong answer there
@@JeremiahStringer I think you're spot on. Both have their pros and cons.
I use cream of tartar as (what I hope is) an absorbable form of potassium, and Redmond Real Salt 50/50. Sometimes I throw in some potassium chloride. All three are cheap.
I made a stove out of an altoid tin. I can use 3 different fuels in it.
That sounds creative
Nice video bud! I HIGHLY and angrily disagree on the alcohol stove 🤣🤣🤣 I prefer alcohol stoves if you're just boiling water and have a vid comin out soon on a new contender! One that if you knock over you won't set the forest on fire!
Lol that's okay. I'd like to see the new one
Recommendations for rain gear, your link for the Patagonia jacket has only smalls left. I was just wondering about pants more than a jacket actually. Price is definitely a deciding factor. Ok, GO!!
Which pants, Mike?
A good rain pants? Recommendations please.
@@mikeghost7788 I don’t wear them very often. Just extreme conditions. Little Donkey Andy has an inexpensive pair online. I have a sponsored video coming out this month with their rain jacket and pants. Maybe check those out
I do like the tapered sleeping pads when bivy camping as they fit inside pretty good. The folding flatware is wierd, I do have some for some kits but for actual backpacking I have a long handle spoon. Meh and no thanks on your cook kits, I'll take a 750ml titanium mug with bail handle or my silicon collapsible kettle (yea that is overkill but I love it!). Haven't EVER had an issue with the Katadyn BeFree personally but know a few have had issues with Sawyer or Platypus.
Nope, do not care about Sawyer's supposed humanitarian work.
That makes sense

A Trangia alcohol stove is pretty safe and a good backup stove
Good stuff, Nick :)
It is hard to get canister stoves to a low enough temp to make rice. This is the only time I use white gas stoves, they are terrible for everything else.
My deluxe can do a pretty good simmer, but some stoves won't really turn down at all. They are all or nothing
Polartec for the win!!
Great stuff, Richard!
I'd go further, if it gets really cold, with a Smartwool hat.
Prefer taper at feet, but square at head (so air-pillow doesn't fall off). Unfortunately, nobody produces such an item. Reason tapered foot-end is better is for cooling when it's too hot and also when hips are shifted facing down, hanging toes are more comfortable.
Time for you to start producing them and making some money off that idea. I love it :D
The true ultra lighter only carries a knife and some paracord. Ditch the backpack and sleep system.
And after some practice just make your own cordage from nature! 😂
XD
The lmnt mix is like drinking straight sea water. I know I did salt however you have to want to drink it. I had 5 packets and I used two and other 3 went in a hiker box. I have the pocket rocket deluxe and it’s great however for reasons unknown to me once I got above 10k the striker didn’t work so bring a lighter. Forget the bladder just have a few smart bottles and a cnoc bladder for filtering water. Not that I’m an expert I just learned a bunch on the trail or I learned what works for me. See Y’all on the trail.
It is very salty
I listen to the MindPump podcast and they call it literally "elementee." Which one is really right?! But a real question, when do you use electrolytes when you're hiking? Only when it's really hot and your sweating a lot? Or when you're hiking for a longer distance?
Element is how they told it was pronounced lol You can use them anytime you are dehydrated or on the verge of it.
@@JeremiahStringer that's hilarious, no more linguistic racists should critique you now!! 😂
Disagree on the Canisterstoves, they end up being heavier bc of the fuel container, and they produce a lot of trash.
The problem with the alcohol stove is it's an UL one, so it's not well engineered for safety or stabiliy. It does fine for narrow pots, to boil water, and that's about it. Anything other and you have to get a pot stand, and a windshield. Instead just buy a premade kit - the Trangia has been known to overlast their users. You also have multiple knockoffs fyi
Yeah I don't like carrying the extra stuff with me, but I know others love it
I use Element too and the watermelon is my favorite! “You know your boy is putting in the work” LOL
Watermelon salt is delicious
Love you Taylor S. 😍

You’re going to trust the Piezo on your stove? Those things are prone to failure, and work like crap at higher altitudes. You definitely don’t want to “leave your lighter at home” if you have one of these.
I usually have 3 or 4 lighters with me at all times. Like one in my toiletries. One in my pocket. One with my cook kit
I have had the same pair of MSR spoons for a decade or more. Never and issue.
That's what I'm looking for. Something that just works that I can use for years
Those folding utensils are idiotic! Food would get all gunked up in the hinges! HOW did that ever pass from idea to actual production?? I use MSR Dromedary bags, not the light ones. They last forever and don’t leak and pair well with the MSR Guardian filter. Titanium cookware is great! I have other options depending on what sort of food we’re bringing. I’m not a long distance hiker so we tend to actually cook so those pocket rocket styles aren’t always the best, depending on where we’re going. I like alcohol stoves because they’re so quiet! But I don’t have idiots stumbling around knocking things over.
Yeah I just don't get it
It'll just go limp on ya 😆
XD That's right
The katadyn filters are very easy to back flush and clean with a small glass of white vinegar. Let it sit for a few hours and it will start flowing in no time. SO wait... you hiked the Long Trail? Are we still waiting on videos??!! Come on man... Thanks for sharing this one at least. Maybe someday you'll share the LT vids. Be good bud.
Lol someday
Nothing wrong with acrylic beanies. If it’s so wet outside that your beanie is going to be soaked, chances are you’re going to be wearing a hooded rain shell over it. Your head also generates a ton of heat, so that beanie is going to dry really fast, if it does get wet.
There are a lot of thru-hikers hundreds of miles into their hikes still rocking their acrylic Carhartt beanies. If they sucked, they would have ditched them in the first 200 miles.
Whatever happened to cooking food over a wood fire? I'll see people with these jet stove things going, and they're sitting next to a fire pit.
Love it, but some pots aren't really made for it. It blacks the pot and can damage the coating
