My first ever SNK game. As a kid back in the day I LOVED this game, still do. The music, the presentation, the graphics, etc. FF 2/Special was amazing man. This is the game that made me fall in love with the company.
When I got my Neo Geo, this was my first game that cost $200. It's still in my small collection, after over two decades. The game is brilliant.

You should listen to his themes in Real Bout Fatal Fury and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, they actually added lyrics to it and it's glorious.
Those times... When each character had its own inputs and they were secret and difficult to perform.
Tbh most arent even difficult. They are just strange, and only if you look them from a SF bias viewpoint. It was SF that made super commands more natural for each char and similar to each other. I.e: 2x qc, [b]fbf, delta, 720... Few things in SF go beyond those commands.
But many those early FF Dm commands are less complicated than the regular kinds of Dm commands in Kof for example. Also no charge char in early FFs have a command like the delta, and no grappler in early FFs have a command like a 720.
So theres nothing particularly difficult about that, mostly. At least compared to the early SFs with supers. Again, it's just a kind of strange feeling for being different from typical SF commands.

I wouldn't really say secret either; by arcade flyer, home console port manuals, or cabinet art, it would show each character and there respective command inputs. I'd say secret would be more like selecting Akuma in Super Street Fighter 2 turbo.

Yea I hate how a lot of fighting games nowadays have generalized inputs for supers(usually double quarter circle forward plus punch or kick). I’ve always liked characters having their own unique inputs. I’m glad most SNK games kept that

Yes, Fatal Fury introduced stage-related features in fg's like stage intros, stage variations and interactibles of different kinds (in Sf2 It was only plain breakable objects at the corners of the stage)
If I remembered right, this is the first fighting game with 2 lanes and super move. The pioneer of its kind.
The first fg with "supers" and a meter (for supers among other functions) was AOF If im not mistaken. Shortly later FF also brought supers but with a different system and no meter yet. The FF series would gain a meter only 2 releases later (RB series).

Yes, the first Fatal Fury was the first fighting game with a two fighting lane system. That's a good way to avoid projectiles and add some more standard attacks!
Such gorgeous and detailed backgrounds, and day/night interchange made them look even more nuanced.

Big bear always reminded me of Vader from the wwf back in the day so I was scared to fight against him as a kid lol.
It was a mind blow finding out Raiden and Big Bear are basically masked and unmasked Vader, because he became really popular in japanese wrestling
I when I think of Raiden, I think of NJPW, AJPW, and WCW Vader, the 1987-1994 version says his first WCW theme song.
Fatal Fury Special would be considerated like the origin of King of Fighters, cause its was the first time a fighter from another fighting game made a apearance here, namely Ryo Sakazaki. After that...King of Fighters 94 was born.
It was the first crossover. Shortly later Capcom was going to put Akuma in X-Men COTA. Which worked similarly to Snk, anticipating a future big crossover project: putting together the Marvel and Capcom worlds.
Ryo was in a few Fatal Fury's iirc. I wouldnt be surprised if he's DLC for the rumored upcoming Fatal Fury game.

Regardless, Ryo could - or should - be in the possible future FF reboot. No more "functions" like Marco, even though he is cool. He has a purpose in Motw just because of the story theme, but that has no place in the context of a normal FF, i.e that isnt intentionally keeping away the veterans.
Even better if the devs appeal to the "lore accuracy" and, instead of a KOF/AOF copy paste, bring a mature Ryo along the lines of NGBC and FFWA.
Canonwise AoF 2 is the first KoF tournament...

Back then we call those death moves, they were so fucking hard to pull off but you feel worthy at the end
Back in the day, none of my friends could do Duck King's because it never occurred to us that the crazy motion was a grab move.
The first FF to have supers was still earlier than the first SF to have supers, so without having any single reference content from Capcom to help, the devs made a good job definitely.
Since the first games the devs showed a much superior creativity than the SF devs. I see that the best minds of Capcom (in terms of fg's) were definitely busy with Marvel and DS rather than SF. Many early FF supers (and also early AOF, early SS and early Kof supers) are not just a plain multihit enhanced version of your special (Shinkuu Hadouken) or a "multiplied" version of your special (Shoryureppa and lots of other SF supers).
SF only started using more creative supers for more chars in SF3. In the same level of the supers seen in Marvel, DS, and the Snk fg's.
A little off subject but the noise Cheng makes when you KO him is my favorite in all fighting games. It's like he starts going into one death yell then interrupts it with another more exaggerated one.
My favorite is Guile's in the original World Warrior.

Some moves are a little tricky to input on a normal controller but FFS is such a great game and my favourite of the Fatal Fury series!

I just had to replay from the start to confirm if I just saw an invisible Power Geyser 😄
It would of been nice to actually see the Power Geyser and the Kauser Wave. It would of been a good idea to allow us to see how much life each move takes away from a opponent with full health. It also would of been nice to see the power difference and range some attacks have like Jubei's throw, or Billy Kane attack with him twirling the stick or just tossing the stick.
Kaiser Wave on FF2 and FF Special nearly kills you. 68% of your lifebar.
