They are diametrically opposed in their approach to Bway music, but that is exactly why I revere them both. Sondheim makes me flex my musical muscles, and Jerry makes me dance and sing out loud right in my living room. Who could ask for anything more?

I am cognitive of the fact that Mr. Herman has contributed greatly to musical theatre in the USA and deserved the honor he received that evening. However, after watching this video several times, it would seem to me that he is unaware of the honor being given to him. His facial expression barely changed. He was completely unexcited. Yes, Sondheim got it way before he did and was the true "genius" of the theatre, but he might have shown some excitement, even if he was nearing the end of his life after having lived with his illness for some decades. Some glint of joy? Maybe? Performances were wonderful, though, and poor Carol Channing being taken out of mothballs for an event to sing 2 lines from Herman's biggest show, "Hello, Dolly"! Anyway....good day.

Look at the obvious disappointment on Herman's face at the finale of this "retrospective". You mean they couldn't (or wouldn't) put men on the stage to sing and dance the La Cage numbers. What are they afraid of? And what a disappointment for viewers as well. Boo, hiss Kennedy Center.

I dislike Jerry Herman, and his (at least seemingly) aloof demeanor during this amazing medley of his work by some incredible performers, further reaffirms my negative sentiments about him. That being said, he's written some of musical theater's most memorable songs and this medley was fantastic! Some of these performers... WOW!
Having watched this again... these background dancers are just terrible. I don't know if they were just hired that afternoon or not but they are not together it's as if the choreographer said well if you want to raise your hand fine and if you want to bend this way okay. Especially weather dancing with Matthew Morrison that's a great example of how off they are. It just looks like a mob moving Any Which Way.
