  • Don Allphin is learning a new way (for him) to target large lake trout. He learned how to rig the Lake Trolls from Colton Christenson, of Lakeshore Tackle and decided to try it out for the first time. Don shows how he was taught to rig the lake trolls, and amazingly, he immediately began catching fish. The tackle seen here can be purchased from Christenson's Lakeshore Tackle. Lake Troll, 30-pound Vicious Monofilament, 6.5-inch Lakeshore Tackle Tubes. 2/0 Maruto treble hooks, Shakespeare Ugly Stick.

      I am happy to do so. I know it makes a difference. I've never been about the trophy... I would rather help people learn new ways to catch fish. Thanks for watching

    Hey Don, when we use the Lake Trolls, we actually connect them directly to the downrigger's ball, then run a release clip off the Lake Troll, and use a very small set-back from the release. This eliminates the drag produced by the flashers, and makes getting the fish in the boat much easier. Give it a try.

      That makes sense. I will give it a try. What a fun day.

    I have a pontoon like that boat that went by, great fishing platform!

      That was Colton Christenson's boat. They are great fishing platforms but they seem to be tough in the wind. Colton does a great job handling this boat though.

    What pound test are you using?

      Also what size/weight downrigger ball?

      I use 30 to 40-pound braid with 30-pound Vicious monofilament leader. The leader is 5 to 6-feet long. I tie the leader to the braid with a double uni knot.

    Don, what was the color name of the grey tube jig?

    • @doafish
      @doafish  Рік тому

      James, I truly cannot remember. I believe it is grey sparkle but I cannot be certain. I know it is a Lakeshore tackle color.

    How far behind the ball are you setting back? Thanks

    • @doafish
      @doafish  Рік тому

      Roughly two feet. And the tube is 14 to 16 inches behind the string.

    What lb test line do you use

    • @doafish
      @doafish  Рік тому +1

      I use 30-pound-test monofilament. There are a lot of companies that make it. Just make sure it is a good brand.

      Lucern Bay.. consisting of antelope flat ( the J run ) and Linwood Bay..( mile long run )..then swim beach across the Utah ..Wyoming border. About the only places you need to be for Lakers. I done this for 38 years the old great lakes methods

    Nice, but you might want to calibrate your scale.

    • @doafish
      @doafish  11 місяців тому

      I won’t dignify that with an answer. Scales can be wrong. I use scales and girth and length measurements AND I have a chart on line that gives you a pretty good way of estimating weight. If you are 6’4 with very large hands fish appear smaller than they are. Sorry to you have a problem with how I do things.

    First, the DWR wants fish over 25 inches to be released. And they want us to keep up to 12 fish shorter than 25 inches. However, I literally catch hundreds of fish like the ones in this video. There are many days I choose NOT to keep any fish regardless of size. It is a larger offense in my book to “waste” a game fish rather than choosing to release the fish you catch on a given day. There is no rule that we MUST keep all our lake trout.
