Why Do Australians Love Vegemite?

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Recently my Australian friend had me try Vegemite and I absolutely hated it and I couldn't understand how people actually liked this stuff. On my recent trip to Australia I decided to ask some people to try Vegemite to see if this was just me.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you would like to suggest a video idea please leave it in the comments, and if you enjoyed please like and subscribe! It was my pleasure to add a bit of science to your day!

How to eat vegemite:
1. watch an American eat vegemite
2. don't do it like that
Verity Harcombe pretty much.
I'm American and I know to put butter on it to get the proper experience
Correct.... nothing more needs to be said
Lol
Yeet 200th like (dAbS
I'd love to see a video that got more into the science (neuroscience, probably?) of how acquired tastes work. There's all kinds of flavors out there that are acquired tastes- cheeses, beer & wine, spicy food... how does the brain re-wire itself to think that something it used to perceive as horrible, now perceives it as amazing?
+Mak Leto I will definitely consider that
I love my vegemite on buttered toast with eggs and a slice of tomato. always makes my morning.
Reading the comments . If I have to use it sparingly it's not good enough to eat. Just admit it.
Liking or not liking is just your own judgement and opinion so I have nothing to say against it but judging a food and not eating it correctly shouldn't really be a thing. I think you should really research how to eat the food before you comment on it.
is he saying Umamu?
i really want to taste it with butter and cook with it. but i can't find it.
+Mykasan You should be able to find it online
Mykasan Smear it thin onto buttered toast. It's delicious. It's also great smeared onto chicken skin before you roast the chicken. It's great on any roasted meat, fish and veggies. It adds umami to almost anything. Do spread it thinly though. I buy, perhaps, 2 regular sized jars a year and eat it several times a week. It isn't something that should be slapped on in spades.
As an Australian, I can tell you didn't try Vegimite correctly. You wanna make your toast, butter it and have the butter melt, then spread a thin later of Vegimite on it, its significantly better when done this way.
+martin monis I actually did first try Vegemite like this. It was just difficult to have butter and toast for the interviews.
yeah but you're not giving people the proper experience
PixieBubbles preach!
True
Seems like everyone's first experience with Vegemite really needs to be supervised by an Australian.
Butter the toast first and then spread the vegemite VERY thin...
Freyja Svansdóttir I swear every foreigner that tries vegemite or marmite takes like a massive blob on their knife and spreads it on the tiniest bit of toast then they complain they don't like it, without even understanding how it's supposed to be eaten
This ^
Freyja Svansdóttir Exactly, I hate when Americans eat it wrong
But not too thin otherwise you won't taste it enough.
George Greig how are they supposed to know
Seeing the people in your video trying out Vegemite, I did notice that most of them had put a rather large amount on a tiny piece of bread. So not really surprised that they didn't like it. Kinda like putting an entire tablespoon of wasabi on a single piece of sushi...
Exactly! Or like completely immersing a piece of sushi in a cup of soya sauce for 1 minute and then eating it!
You gotta have butter (and sometimes even a slice of cheese) with it... I never eat Vegemite w/o butter.
Yeah but why dilute the true flavour with butter when you can just avoid it all together. 😩
canadianbeylover why dilute the real flavour of soy sauce with food? Just drink it out of the bottle, and if you dont like how it REALLY tastes, dont have it at all xD
I'm from Austria and I'd use more than they did lol. Just bc it looks very much like Nutella &most people can't get enough of that😂
I'm American and have never had it, but I'm very curious about it. So is it used to enhance the taste of other foods? A lot of people dislike wasabi but I love it with fish; just a dab of wasabi brings out a lot of flavor. Is vegemite like that with toast? Very intrigued and curious
Australians love vegemite because we're the only goddamn ones who know how to eat it. You basically soak the toast in butter (1mm thick) and then spread a super thin layer of vegemite on top (Like 0.05mm thick... or less)
That's all there is to it.
***** YES! You gotta share this secret with your fellow countrymen. We all deserve the delicious Vegemite 👌
I merely put enough to melt the butter and then put a relatively large amount. I want to taste the saltiness.
0.049 is better
I KNOW RIGHT!!!!!!!
The Norris nuts hate it!
Butter Butter Butter
Every time, Vegemite goes with Butter!
Correction, vegemite is found in 10/10 Australian pantries.
12/10
I'm Australian and I can say, even Australians have differing opinions on how much vegimite to use. I personally like it a lot thicker than most, and my wife doesn't like it, instead prefering Promite on her toast. My kids like vegimite but I spread it pretty thin for them. But it does taste better with buttered toast, especialy with eggs or avocado on top :)
Vegemite + Eggs/Avocado?
Haven't heard that before... might have to give it a go :o
i'm reading this with an australian accent.

I only have termite on my toast.
Billy Sanchez lol me too... jk
There's too much Vegemite on each piece of bread. The entire jar of Vegemite should last about 3 months of breakfasts if you're putting the right amount on. Heaped Vegemite is awful, with butter and spread thinly it's amazing.
Its not just aussies that love it, new zealanders love it as well.
Joanne kiwigal parasiting our national food, first Pavlova's now vegemite

Then shouldn't it be rotated 90 degrees and be square? And even so, the Belgian flag is black-yellow-red, left to right.

I'm Australian and I don't like Vegemite.

You gotta use Butter:Vegemite ratio m8 😂 Butter the toast, let it melt, add a very thin spread of Vegemite. Boom. Your taste buds have just been served.
P.S, it also tastes better with a slice of cheese if you ask me m8.
Who else is here because of the song down under from men at work?
Vegemite should to be combined with butter or cheese. I do use in when making/cooking a few other dishes too.
Oh yeah! It's surprisingly(?) good with cheese
I’m Australian and during the pandemic like many people I expanded my dietary choices. During this experience I came across Korean Miso and I noticed similar flavours. In retrospect Vegemite is dark miso spread. And 100% it’s cultural I was indoctrinated with it.
Vegemite is packed with vitamins (A, E & lots of the B group), minerals and helps balance your electrolytes, it also has (Vegetable) protean. if your too ill or hungover to eat something proper some Vegemite on toast will sea you throw till you can eat real food.
the vitamins in Vegemite are good for muscle and neural development, good for Athletes & Academics.
Noooo! You must butter the bread or toast first! I basically don’t feel comfortable if I don’t have Vegemite in my house! Vegemite and cheddar cheese grilled on toast is the bomb diggity! 😝
Triggered....
Non-Australian people who eat vegemite EAT A SPOONNNFULLL?!!!!!!!
Like us Australians never do that?! Lmao
1:49 none of them is bulgarian, im bulgarian and i know that isnt my language
Денислав Аргиров They are Slovenian
My wife was born overseas- when she was pregnant with our son, she became addicted to Vegemite , has it for brekkie every day. My son loves it. Vegemite is part of us, it’s in the air part of the land and makes ya true blue.
Oh no no no. As an American even I can tell you now that you’re doing it wrong. It’s not like a thing I eat often, but I’ll see it and pick it up every few years and have it a few times a year. You have to add a lot of butter and just a *THIN* layer of vegemite. I put 3 small dots of it on the edge of the toast then spread it across.
It’s not bad if you do it right.
Am I the only aussie who actually needs a 2/3 vegemite 1/3 butter ratio on toast to find that perfect harmony?
Vegemite became popular on school lunches before the days of margarine when the main spread for bread was butter. So it tastes a whole lot better with butter.
im from Australia i love vegemite. it can be weeks between when i last ate it and i get a feeling i must have some. on well done toast with real butter and thin cheese slices on it. it tastes so good i can see why people from other countries dont like it. it is nasty without butter. btw marmite is disgusting
Eat it properly and you won’t have to make this dumb video Americans eat a full table spoon like no eat it with a bit of melted butter and a little vegemite
Is also really good with cheese. Also, heard of shapes? We have vegemite and cheese flavoured shapes
Aussie here, man you guys never do the right amount. Lots of butter, VERY little Vegemite... Spread it so thin that its like none is there... However I do eat that much on mine coz i LOVE it
Matt Wilkinson I luve it 2
no spread it as thick as you like I have a fair bit
G'day fellow Aussie
The reason you dumbasses hate Vegemite is because you either eat it out of the jar or put it on bread without butter.
answer: because they force you to eat it in kindergarten :)
i’m australian trust me
I'm American, born and raised in Minnesota. The first time I tried Vegemite was in about 2009 I think, so I was about 29 years old, and I quite liked it. It's definitely true, though, what those girls said: you need a good butter to Vegemite ratio.
Vegemite is yummy🇦🇺
Cadwaladr
Oi, I'm Minnesotan as well! And I've tried Vegemite. Loved it.
No one cares it just tastes good to us and oh my God add some butter please.
What flag is that at 1:58?

He preferes Nutella, so he must be German :D
+Manu _ Your actually right!
ScienceC while I like the looks of this alternate version, our flag is black red gold/yellow from top to bottom as others pointed out
it's the manGerny flag
This seems like a typical school project
I love Vegemite so much I put a shit ton on toast. If you’re trying it first time put nice buttered toast with little vegemite.
Vegemite and butter pasta🤤🤤🤤
I tasted it once and I swear I almost vomited

Hot Toast With Butter With A Thin Layer Of Vegemite!
I'm Australian And Used To Love It But Kinda Grew Out Of It!
Some People Hate It Some People Like It But Some Are In Between!
You Did A Great Job Explaining All The Past History!
But Remember Every Country Has There Own Special Delicacy!
Like America Has Jelly & Peanut Butter, We Have Jam & Peanut Butter!
Jam & Jelly Are Completely Different But Taste The Same!
For Anyone That Does Not Like Vegemite Remember To Try It With Butter!
They Have A New One Called Vegemite Cheeseybite It's Basically Vegemite & Cream-cheese!
So My Recommendation For People Who Don't Like Vegemite, Just Eat It With Cream-cheese:)
I'm American. The first time I tried Vegemite I really didn't like it. But over the years I would occasionally try it and each time liked it a little more each time. Now I love the stuff and use much more than a scraping. It's really an aquired taste.
ur video is deviating.. im unliking it... its not the way how u eat it... make more research
Change that americacentric map with a less arrogant one that doesn't split continents in half...
I love vegimite, it's best on toast and butter (of course), and also on a cheese croissant and actually white castle burgers.
I think it's an acquired taste.
I'm half Slovak/half Croatian and I love Vegemite. Now I'm not sure, by your logic, does it mean both nations love it, or is it just half of heach nation that loves it (since I'm half and half)? Oh and also, if you're an American, and your logic is clearly nonexistent, does it mean it's the same for all Americans?
I'm Australian. And I think Vegemite is bad. Like it's disgusting. I can already hear the angry Australians furiously typing on their keyboard lol.
You aren't eating it right. First, you toast some bread. Second, while the bread is still warm, spread a bit of butter on the bread and make sure it melts. Third, spread a thin layer of Vegemite (the most beautiful spread on the planet) on the toast. BTW Don't compare Vegemite to peanut butter. Eating peanut butter will never be patriotic. Also, I am from Northern Italy and moved to Australia when I was 2 and looooove Vegemite. I've been craving it for over a month. And you put too much on when you tried it in the beginning. It was too thick and was visibly as black as beyond a black hole's event horizon. AND Vegemite to me has a sort of sweet taste to me in conjunction with the saltiness.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Marmite in the UK was around a decade or two before Vegemite. However, even the company marketed it at some point in the 2000's with the slogan, "You ever love it, or you hate it." It's very split in the UK (being a hater myself, whereas my wife loves it)!
They love it because they eat it right. Imagine I went in to the store, bought concentrated fruit juice and drank it just like that then said I don't like it... That's Americans for you. The bread is best toasted and buttered, otherwise the literal tip of your knife amount of vegemite/marmite/oxo will stick to the patch of bread you put it on and will be hard to spread and mix with the butter. If your bread or a patch of bread is dark like you did there, congratulations you did it wrong.
Vegimite and Marmite should both be on the list of illegal bio weapons and subsequently outlawed.
Feeding either to anybody should consist of violating sombody's human rights and be punishable with a lengthy prison term.
It's the stuff of nightmares.
Wrong! All the foreigners ate it wrong. You can't liken it to peanut paste or jam lol, it's more like spreadable soya-sauce if you want to compare it to something that people know. You need butter and way less vegemite unless you are a seasoned Aussie who likes it thick, some do. That was like offering someone a tablespoon of soya-sauce straight off a spoon. A lot of people like soya-sauce mixed into their food, but they don't normally drink it neat.
LOL I'm an American and I love Vegemite.... but my Kiwi friends taught me how to not eat it like a fool with heaps of something creamy (butter, cheese, avocado). See also by proxy, NZ Marmite, although that, Vegemite, and UK Marmite have different flavor profiles. Kinda like sriracha, it's something I buy one jar of in my local import shop, and have it last the majority of the year....
New Zealanders also like it, as we also have our own version of Marmite. However, given the rivalry that exists between Australians and New Zealanders (to the point where, during the Korean War, other participants on the UN side seriously wondered whether the Aussies and Kiwis were even aware that they were on the same side, and weren't just using the Korean conflict as a convenient excuse to bring their respective militaries within firing range of each other,) very few New Zealanders are likely to publicly admit it.
I’m Australian and when I hear you say I hate vegemite it’s like hearing I hate Australia and so as payback I’m gonna say I hate peanut butter and jelly and stop eating it with a spoon, you want to get that piece of bread nice and brown out of toaster as quick as possible spread a lot of butter on it and a medium (because I’m hardcore og vegemite eater) or a light amount for you Americans and you’ll find with enough butter and a little bit of vegemite it tastes amazing
I'm Australian. Personally, a healthy and tasty way to eat vegemite is to dip cucumbers with vegemite.
I might be a bit weird cause sometimes I just take out a jar of vegemite and start eating it.
it's great
We like vegemite because it's good. My favourite way of eating vegemite is with fried eggs on toast: spread toast with butter (butter is important to tone down the taste of vegemite), spread a thin layer of vegemite on the toast, place a slice of bega cheese on the toast, spread cheese with a thin layer of Rosella Fruit Chutney, fry an egg with a slice of ham and place on top of toast, salt and pepper to taste (probably don't need the salt though). You can eat it with a knife and fork or between 2 slices of toast and eat it like a sandwich. Wash it down with a nice cup of hot water with a teaspoon of vegemite stirred in, yummmeee, the best breakfast ever!
HAHAHA! hilarious. They had to get an American scientist to work out our food habits...
Americans are both ridiculous and adorable.
As a Brit, I find Marmite awful. It's very much a love it or hate it thing. Another similar sort of love it or hate it thing we have is Bovril. It's basically a more awful Marmite.
Australians are probably wondering why American food is overloaded with sugar. Even bread has sugar/corn syrup in it.
1:57 I never in my life saw that flag. I don't even know if it's real...
I'm Australian and I don’t like vegemite but my family visiting from another country don’t know that so here I am with like 5 tubs of vegemite
no one likes Vegemite when it's lathered on like that, Australians included. I'd have the same reaction if there was that much on my toast. It's supposed to be a paper-thin layer on top of melted butter on the bread. Sigh
Apparently there is a similar spread in Switzerland called "Cenovis" which is quite popular especially in the French speaking part, and then there's another slightly sweeter spread than Vegemite called "Marmite" in New Zealand. Also, anecdotally it seems like a lot of Australians hate Vegemite, but I love yeast extract spreads and I just can't understand how people could find them disgusting. Of course there is a very precise way of serving them (NEVER WITHOUT BUTTER/MARGARINE).
The toast has to be hot so that the butter melts through and the bread thick to hold the melted butter then enough vegemite to cover from side to side. Thats the only way to eat it. Or very fresh thick slice of white bread preferably from an unsliced loaf of bread covered in butter and then a good even spread of vegemite. Absolutely lovely. Also good on rye bread. Also vegemite full of vitamin b. Keeps the mosquitoes from biting.
I'm Italian and vegemite it's one of the best things in the world. Plus I'm vegan, so i spread a thin layer of vegan butter on bread and on top a super thin layer of vegemite i guess the ratio butter:vegemite it's 2:1. People they think it is similar to nutella and eat first time a spoon!
This annoys me. Both Marmite and Vegemite taste good and I'm not even Australian. U just dont apply it thick like peanut butter.
(I’m from Australia, vegemites amazing”
Next title: why do Americans hate vegemite?
It's because Americans only eat fatty and/or sweet shit for breakfast and on bread, that's why they're not accustomed to something like this
A lot of it has to do with what you're raised eating, and many other factors. There are plenty of things Americans eat that other cultures can't stand too
False title, I’m Australian and I fucking HATE vegemite. You didn’t even eat it correctly either.
There is no food in the US that only tastes good in very small amounts. This is part of the reason Americans always screw it up. It doesn’t make any sense that you would use such a small amount.
I’ve been having the stuff my whole life (I’m half Australian half american) and the saltiness has gone away for me if I don’t think about it
what's this nationality? red-black-yellow horizontal stripes ... at 1:58
Oh my! You get a butter on it, then you spread the smallest amount! SERIOUSLY A LITTLE BIT!
Americans always eat vegemite in ridiculously incorrect ways. It's not nutella.
I'm american and I love both marmite and vegemite and those who dont like it need to understand that it should not be compared to pb and jelly or nutella cause they are sweet and vegemite and marmite is not sweet. When they tasted it they must have a clear expectation that they are not going to taste sweet notes, but savory. Butter is also a savory spread for toast and everyon eloves that but it is very bad for health, vegemite and marmite are good for health.
Filipino here who loves vegemite. It really goes best with peanut butter or nutella. One should only put a little bit of it on bread. For Asians, the taste is quite similar to soy sauce.
