I think for most Australians it’s a comfort food cause it’s usually given to you very young, when my children were bubs and just starting to eat food, I would often give them a little bit of toast with a thin smear of vegemite on it, so it’s one of their earliest food memories. I think this is quite common here

Hi. I'm from Poland. In Europe we have something called Maggi. Originally it was made from herbs, but now it's made from yeast extract like your Vegemite, but it comes in liquidised form. It's mainly used as soup seasoning but you can also sprinkle it on bread and spread some butter. I used to eat that as a kid :-)

Its a beautiful delicacy. Butter the toast, spread the vegemite not too thick or thin - there should be marbelling, then take a small nob of butter or margarine on the end of the butter knife and spread that over the middle of the vegemite to seal it over locking in the flavour and toning down the salty bitterness at the same time.

Toasted Vegemite and melted cheese OMG! 2 slices of toast, butter or marg, Vegemite, tasty cheese, grill until cheese melts, then put both slices together and cut in half. Or you can do triple cheese, put another cheese on one toast, stick together, put back in grill or oven, cut in half, should be melted cheese slightly coming out over the line of the black gold.

Vegemite originated in the UK where it's called Marmite, Australians changed the name and claimed it as their own. Basicaly the same but Vegemite has an easier consistancy to use. Best recepie for Vegemite : Planters dry roasted peanuts, three tblsp (American), one tblsp Hellmann's mayonaise (American), one large knob of Vegemite (British Australian). Mix in a small bowl and eat as is or between two slices of bread.

Give a try and you will be surprise about the excellent taste of Cenovit. And since now vou can easier get a yeast extract in Brazil, São Paulo, you can abuse and use it in your recipes ... beside using it on a buttery toast ! Enjoy the new Cenovit.

Of course other countries like it, they even love it, many many countries. It didn't originate in Australia even. You will find mostly it's ex-English colonies that love it for the simple reason that it's a British product. It all started with "Marmite" (yeast by product of making beer) which is basically the same thing as Vegemite both are meat free, yeast protein spreads. Used as stock in dishes or as a spread its almost 100% umami flavoured and entirely vegan. It's very good for you particularly if you don't eat meat as its packed with the B complex vitamins essential in our diet but lacking in vegetables.
The Australians after years of importing Marmite from the UK developed their own brand (as did a few other countries) and they called theirs "Vegemite", a play on the word Marmite. You can even get both of them in Hong Kong for example, South Africa however just Marmite, New Zealand its Marmite and Vegemite, Canada just Vegemite, almost right across Asia, India, Malaysia etc it's British Marmite........it's always one or the other, or both. English Expats like the stuff so it's often exported for that market elsewhere too like Dubai etc. America is probably the only English speaking country on the globe that don't eat either Vegemite or Marmite or even know exactly what it is.
For Americans who are puzzled as to what it is, it's just like a spreadable bouillon cube, or stock-cube without the bad stuff. So when ever you need umami to flavour something even your toast, soup or stew there it is. The British even use Marmite as beef tea but Oxo is more popular, Oxo is the meat version of Marmite or Vegemite. Not many people truly dislike deeply savoury even though it can be strong in excess, so I reckon people who claim not to like the taste are probably just being pretentious even if they don't exactly know why. Chefs use a similar product called glace de viande or just glace in French, its a very thick Marmite like heavy reduction of beef or chicken which they add to meat dishes or as a glace on roasted meat etc. In fact "Marmite" means a heavy cast iron pot in French one used for making stock.
Which do I prefer? Vegemite everytime. Marmite hardens and is difficult to spread and use it's also even more salty.

As long as you understand what and why you are putting it in your mouth, you're fine.

Plain and simple you have to be a born and bred Aussie to like it, it's as simple as that.

Had an Aussie recommend I try it in a stew. It can work, though you still have to be careful with it

I am Australian and I hate the stuff. If I do eat it, which is very very rare then the only way is toast, butter and a tiny bit of vegemite.

I am an American. I love peanut butter. On bread with sliced bananas. Or sour cream, or cheese, or cream cheese, or CHEETOS!, or yes even mayo (ok shoot me).

My mom was Australian, she would give me Marmite as a kid. (Vegemite was not as available as Marmite in the 'States back then.) So it actually like a little on my toast.
Cheesymite scrolls taste good to me.

My school canteen fostered Vegemite appreciation; their hot cheese and Vegemite scrolls. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
