Thanks so much for a great video. For YEARS, one of my favorite things to do is collect glass from the desert. I'm forever asking my husband to "stop the car"!. I'll get out and just have a ball collecting glass. It also helps to clean up the desert. Some I want to tumble, and some, I just put into jars to display. I think I've finally found something else to do with my glass bits! Thanks again
@@UpcycleDesignLab That's funny as I've always wanted to try fusing glass, and making my own glass beads from found glass of course. Retirement is only 20 months away, but who's counting! So many projects to try.
Thank you! I'm thinking of trying out a beginner lamp work kit and need a kiln but didn't want to spend too much until I'm sure I'm going to pursue this as a hobby. Wanting to design and create my own beads. This will be perfect until I'm sure of myself. I'm also wanting to learn about fusing glass.
Hi Carrie - Thanks for watching. There is a lot to learn about glass fusing and I am certainly a beginner myself but this little kiln makes it very easy to get started.
Thank you for this video. I've never done it before and I was only interested in doing it if I could use recycled glass. It's great to see you doing that successfully. Thanks for the video
You did a great job. I have so many questions. I really don't know where to even begin. Is there a iln that you would reccomend? What kind of a microwave do you get??? Does the kiln tell you how long of time do you cook it. Some of my questions are silly sounding and I apologize. You do such a great job. Keep up the good work.
Hi thanks for your questions. I can recommend the fuseworks kiln brand but it is the most expensive one. I also have a very inexpensive klin that is similar but it does take a little longer to heat up. I believe any microwave will work but the higher the wattage the faster the kiln will heat up. Your kiln should provide some guidelines on heating times. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for all your teaching, My question is I bought a kiln and all the pieces keep breaking, I am using the glass that came with my kiln, any suggestions on why this is happening? 😊
Hi - thanks for watching. Sorry you are having trouble with your kiln. I haven't really had a problem with pieces breaking and I have only used recycled glass. My only thoughts are that you might be mixing glass with different COE you could also trying varying your fusing time. I would recommend shortening the time a little if you can. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the video. What wattage microwave do you use. The first microwave kiln I had broke the turntable in my microwave and something happened to the kiln itself. I purchased a large microwave kiln, the microwave didn't melt the 90 COE glass. Your insight is appreciated. 😊
Hi Maggie - Our microwave is 1000 watts. I don't have any experience with the larger kiln. Mine is the smallest version I think. But I have heard that the larger kilns do take a lot longer to heat up so it might be harder on your microwave. I don't know a lot about the COE of the glass I have fused since I use recycled glass. Sorry I can't be more help.
Thank you for a great video - I appreciate it very much. Could you please tell me if there's a way to stack separate pieces? Any tiny shelves for a microwave kiln? Is this a terrible idea? Thanks again.
Hi thanks for watching. I have never heard of anything like that I think it would be difficult to find a material that would be safe for the microwave and not melt in the kiln. Hope that answers your question. 🙂
My dad does stained glass art, so if I get a chance to try this technique I'll probably use that, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know the COE or viscosity of anything, so I'll be in the same boat as you 😂
What can you use to shape your Jewlery let’s say a heart ♥️ when the glass fusing be processed in kiln? I want to make heart shape and other shapes using the melted glass but I’m not sure you can use cookie cutter pottery shape for the glass melt into creating the shape disered from the mold
Hi - thanks for your question. I am sorry but I don't have an answer for you. I am not aware of any molds that are suitable for the microwave kiln. I have tried to make some shapes by arranging the glass before fusing but they normally do not hold their shape and the temperature in the kiln is too hot for any materials not made specifically for kilns. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Hi I haven't ever used it and none of the kilns I have say to use it. I have heard of kiln wash but I don't really know what it is for. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I must have the wrong coe, i recently got into fusing and used 2 different bottles, but when they got down to around 140 degrees, the gladd blob i made cracked apart.
Thank you so much for you video :) You mentioned not knowing the COE. Have you experimented any cracks on your pieces because of that, with time I mean, not directly after firing. I heard that with time cracks can happen when you fused non compatible pieces and I’m worried because I have made some :/ thanks!
Sorry I don't have a definitive answer. I have had some pieces break but they were outside and they were all the same glass so there was no conflict of COE. Most of the items I have fused have been a single color or they have been tack fused so the glass isn't really mixing together. I do have a few pieces that are mixed color and fully fused and they are a couple of years old with no cracks so far and of course they are very small pieces of glass. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Hi I just finished your video . I’m needing to know how do I make the hole when I’m melting the glass bottom of a wine bottle . Do I keep it in the microwave for a few minutes then push a nail through the melted glass . Then put it back in the microwave kiln ?
Hi Cynthia - I am not sure that I understand what you are trying to do but I don't think what you are suggesting would work. First I am afraid you would damaged the kiln and given the temperature of the glass there could be a lot of heat transfer to any metal object which could be dangerous. I also don't think the hole would remain as the molten glass would re-level itself if you put it back in the microwave. Sorry I know that is not the answer you were hoping for. I am sure there are folks with more experience that might be able to help you. Thanks for watching.
Hello Cindy, Thanks for this video, I've been wanting to make glass windchimes for a while and will definitely use the kiln for my projects. I read in a few websites I should have a dedicated microwave oven for glass fusing, however non of them mention anything about what the risks are. Do you know? Thanks.
Hi Axel - I am sorry I don't know the answer to your question. The only thing that I can tell you is that the instructions that came with my kiln said to clean the microwave after using the kiln. Thanks for watching.
Kiln paper is made of ceramic fibers, which become airborne in the kiln and microwave, you don't want them in your food. Washing is insufficient, because you can't be sure you'll get it out or just move it around. Well worth buying a cheap or used one.
I just started today and my Kiln shelf turn black and the glass did not melt together I put the paper on the shelf like it said need help is the kiln bad now ?
Hi Stacy - I have never seen my klin change color. The fusing paper can turn a dark brownish color in the early part of the fusing process but as the glass continues to heat up the paper turns back to white and the glass begins to turn yellow/orange. Are you saying that your kiln base is brown? I don't think that should be happening. If the paper turned brown and the glass didn't fuse but your kiln hasn't changed color my guess is that you need to heat the kiln longer. Check your instructions for heating times. Some kilns take longer than others to heat up. Hope that helps. Let me know if you still have questions. Thanks for watching.
Hello Cindy! I'm an archer. I flintknap my own arrowheads from glass bottles, and they work really well! Problem is, there's a LOT of glass which gets wasted along the way to making a usable arrowhead. What I want to do is crush the waste glass from my various projects and fuse them together into a usable ingot. Basically a zero-waste process for upcycling my glass chips. Does that sound like something I do by utilizing your method?
Hi Robert - yes you could used this kiln for small projects. If you have a lot of glass or you want to fuse larger piece you might want a larger kiln. Thanks for watching.
