Absolutely fabulous! Just wondering if you're able to do a traditional firing in a microwave rather than a raku or is that the only option for firing because of the temperature
Great video! Im a total beginner with clay and this overview of raku was very helpful. The only thing I suggest is NOT leaving your hot kiln in the microwave to cool down, that heat coming from the hole can damage the microwave.
It’s a really good video to show the traditional firing techniques. And I’m wondering if the object under the kiln is what? Could you share the information? Thank you.
that's correct! So for bisque, it's exactly the same technique but just without glaze, heat it until you see the glow. It doesn't have to be glowing hot though
the temp of the body will probably be 1200 as it's stonware, the glaze is raku so 700/800 degrees is where it works best, and yes you are correct, carbon trapping!
Hello.....fab video you make it look so easy and fun.....im getting together the kit the only thing is Adam was holding quite a large glass basque kiln which i cant seem to find on the info anywhere, as the amazon one is much smaller ....would you have a link as to where i could find this please. Thank you best wishes
I just did my first raku in the microwave! Some of my glazes have little puckering marks. Any suggestions on what to do differently? I’m guess I maybe put the glaze on too thickly or left them in too long because the sunlight made it harder to see the glow. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
@@kourtneyswholesomelife thank you! I put photos in a raku group and found out the pockmarks were because I had pulled them out of the kiln before the glaze had fully matured. It’s not enough for an orange glow. Gotta check the glaze for a smooth glassy texture first. Not sure if my microwave is one of those that has a way of keeping the temperature in the microwave below a certain level, but it took a whole 15 minutes on full power for them to get to the right smooth mature glaze stage.
@@small_ceramics do you notice much difference with red iron based clays and white clays? i have a lot of red clay i am digging up here in Cairns Australia.
Hey, the clay is a white stoneware. Any clay can be used in a microwave kiln. The glazes are more tricky, some will be very temperamental in the kiln. The ones in this video are raku specific but if you want to use regular glazes, I would suggest trying Mayco Jungle gems! they seem to do well in the kiln!
I’m inspired to try but know nothing! Once you’ve thrown your piece how long do you leave it before glazing & firing? Can it be done on the same day? Thank you!
You can get lower temp clay that vitrifies at lower temps. I saw a lady on Instagram talk about it but it going to test it myself to see because I’m skeptical
I studied Ceramics Art in College and did a number of Raku firings. I didn't know it was posible doing Raku with a microwave. I was surprised with dunking in water I hadn't seen that done before. Those are nice looking examples you made.
I want to make cylinder shapes as high and as wide as the kiln oven that goes into the microwave. Is that possible or do i need to leave a bigger gap inside?

Hey! Yes you are.... some glazes work better than others, it's all about trial and error. Mayco jungle Gems fire really well in the kiln
I loved this tutorial so much! Jumping into my garden to do this today. I really can't wait. ❤
let us know how it goes!

So much fun filming this! Come over and microfire any time 🎉❤
Thanks Adam, it was a great pleasure!
Hi Adam, can you tell me what clay you used? Is it low firing? Thanks in advance
I'm in Canada, so this kiln may not be available, but I LOVE this!! Thanks for sharing!!
try searching for 'Professional Microwave Kiln for Glass Fusing Small Kiln' on Canadian amazon!
@@small_ceramics Thanks!
It’s a really good video to show the traditional firing techniques. And I’m wondering if the object under the kiln is what? Could you share the information? Thank you.
Yes the object under is just an up-turned dish that covers the rotating element of the microwave, to keep the kiln stable
Nice work, cute pots, thanks for sharing some of your microwave raku knowledge, great to watch😊
You are great teachers!
Think someone already asked about clay body and bisque. I don’t have a kiln and found this to be fascinating
the clay bodie is just a regular stoneware!
Does it matter what clay you use with the raku glaze? Or is there one that you would recommend? Excited to get my wheel and kiln 💖
It doesn't matter! Any clay works. With stoneware, you might need to heat it for longer is all!
@@small_ceramicsthank you!!
Interesting concept.
Great video!
And I loved your work on Throw Down!❤️✨✨✨
I live this, Loved you GPTD. What are you using to place your Kiln o the table to insulate the heat from the table?
you can use a stone slab, or a kiln shelf which is what we are using here! Anything that is really impervious to heat!
Sorry for my grammar and spelling errors...
I use fire bricks, you can get them from the hardware store and they're cheaper than kiln furniture 😁
Can you show us the timings for bisque firing the stoneware clay? Do we put it in the microwave until it glows, like when glazing?
that's correct! So for bisque, it's exactly the same technique but just without glaze, heat it until you see the glow. It doesn't have to be glowing hot though
These guys are awesome!
So interesting! Thank you for sharing! :)
You guys have inspired me to make my own mini-pottery.❤❤❤
Great video, thanks. Questions: what cone temp is your body and glaze, and is the black due to iron reduction in the clay or carbon from the ash?
the temp of the body will probably be 1200 as it's stonware, the glaze is raku so 700/800 degrees is where it works best, and yes you are correct, carbon trapping!

yes search for Mailin on insta, she makes and sells them bigger!
What size kiln would you recommend? And do you use raku clay or can you use any clay? Thank you.
I would probably start with the small if it's your first time, and I use regular clay (ash white stoneware) you can use any clay in a microwave kiln!
Hi Adam! I loved watching you on the Great Pottery Throw Down!
love this guys thanks for making this channel, cant wait to try it myself

I’d say the glaze is too thick

@@caitlinbattersby4645 that sounds about right, 15 mins! Mine is the same, 800W
Nice! I was wondering why you didn't get any raku craquelure. And how a large a piece you can put in the microwave kiln, too.
it's about 4cmx4cm!
@@small_ceramics Thank you!! And the glaze wouldn't actually work at only 1000 degrees, right? It works because of the raku fire?
@@melody5437 Some glazes do actually work that aren't raku glazes!
Whats inside the microwave? The thing you are putting the kiln on...love this💜
it's a little ceramic dish turned upside down, to stop the spinner interfering with the kiln as it heats
Does it matter what kind of mucrowave you use? Will an 1800w microwave fire higher temps?
it won't, it will just stay hot for longer. I would use an 800W microwave, any will do!
@@small_ceramics do you notice much difference with red iron based clays and white clays? i have a lot of red clay i am digging up here in Cairns Australia.
What clay and glaze are used please, this information seems impossible to fine 😞
I have scarva earth stone and Botz oriental blue glaze and it's been a disaster

I leave it for a few hours in the sun, and then use the heat of the kiln to really dry it out before putting it in for its bisque firing
Hi what did you have in the microwave that you sat the kiln on? Thanks
a small ceramic dsih
Do you bisque this way too?
yes you bisque in the same way :)
I have so many questions. If I use my regular cone 6 clay, will it fire to vitrification or will a vase leak?
it depends on the glaze. I would say not...
You can get lower temp clay that vitrifies at lower temps. I saw a lady on Instagram talk about it but it going to test it myself to see because I’m skeptical
Can you do this without glazing?
can you make larger pieces with this method?
I think you can if use a larger kiln. But as Adam says in this video, the larger it is the longer it needs to fire for
What finish does the black part have? Matte?
that's right, matte, it's just the clay but with carbon trapped on the surface
What clay do you use
Can you do gold lustre firing in a microwave kiln? 😮
you can! 30-60 seconds only in the microwave
Is the water room temp?
it is! it cools the pot very well
yay
❤❤

why is this so awkward .....
what do you mean lol
I want to make cylinder shapes as high and as wide as the kiln oven that goes into the microwave. Is that possible or do i need to leave a bigger gap inside?
it's best to leave a bit of a gap around the pot so it doesn't get too overheated in one area and not the other
