Hi, please take into account that Jimmy's voice has developed beautifully over the last 20ish years. In his younger, Cold Chisel days, when they had finally hit success after years of pub gigs, Jimmy was an alcoholic and drinking on stage and yeah, his voice did come across as screamy in some songs, so I think this is where some of your commenters are referencing from. They have not listened to older, more bluesy, more voice controlled Jimmy, who is a long time sober and beautiful family man. He has written a book about his life which I have not yet read. He grew up here in Adelaide, in a tough, low income area called Elizabeth. Hope this helps understand the screamy comments... Hugs!! Oh, and keep in mind he is 65! He started performing in 1973.

@@chisel83 Hey! Great name! I didn't mean to come across as critical. I love Jimmy's voice, actually appreciating it even more since watching some of these reaction vids. I guess I was trying to give a condensed reason as to why some people use the screaming term, as he mentions it every time he reacts to a Jimmy song. Cheers!

Ian Moss on guitar is a great in his own way, guitar and vocals. He sings lead on part or all on quite a lot of Chisel stuff. The whole Cold Chisel band is great. Every member of the band wrote a song that was a hit record at least in Australia.
The US record companies couldn’t do anything with Cold Chisel. Amazing hey?

    • @stevegraham3817
      @stevegraham3817 3 роки тому +18

The US Promoter asked them if they wanted a convertible Cadillac to cruise around in, them asked if they needed any coke or other substances, they said maybe later, what gigs and radio interviews have you got lined up? Promoter only had a small community country and western station booked out in the back blocks who weren't interested in rocking blues. So they basically packed up and came home. I see that trip as a wasted opportunity where they could have done a road trip and played a few dive bars, they did learn their learn their craft in the wild bars of Oz, and I reckon quite a few people would have spread the word pretty quickly over there.

I'm British and live in the uk and I've been a massive fan of both of them since the 1980s and 90s, and it's so good that you can also see what me and everybody else has seen in both of them for decades

The first singer is Ian Moss, the guitarist from Cold Chisel and a music legend in his own right. This song is one of the band's best - and one of the best rock ballads of all time. You should check out the original recorded version to appreciate the full emotion of the song.

Ian Moss could sing for Australia, and then he plays guitar like a cross of Hendrix, Beck and Wes..
That original Circus Animals arrangement is still the best. I love how when they play it now, Charlie Drayton doesn't drum on it, but sits with the guys up the front with a shaker out of respect to Steve Prestwich. Steve was doing just that in the clip here RIP

Also off topic, I highly suggest you watch Jimmy Barnes’ movie about his life called the working class boy. in the movie he covers a lot of his songs with his children and other Australian artists such as diesel and his band members in cold chisel. It is incredibly heartbreaking movie but so well done. He has written two Best seller books.

    info for you:
Cold Chisel's origins stem back to Adelaide in 1973, originally named Orange, the band started out as a heavy metal cover band consisting of bassist Les Kaczmarek, keyboardist Don Walker, guitarist Ian Moss and drummer Steve Prestwich.
Jimmy Barnes was 16 when he joined the group Cold Chisel soon after the original members and Jimmy became their lead singer.
Cold Chisel are an Australian pub rock band, which formed in Adelaide in 1973 by mainstay members Ian Moss on guitar and vocals, Steve Prestwich on drums and Don Walker on piano and keyboards. They were soon joined by Jimmy Barnes on lead vocals and, in 1975, Phil Small became their bass guitarist. The group disbanded in late 1983 but subsequently reformed several times.
Musicologist Ian McFarlane wrote that they became "one of Australia's best-loved groups" as well as "one of the best live bands", fusing "a combination of rockabilly, hard rock and rough-house soul'n'blues that was defiantly Australian in outlook."
Eight of their studio albums have reached the Australian top five, Breakfast at Sweethearts (February 1979), East (June 1980), Circus Animals (March 1982, No. 1), Twentieth Century (April 1984, No. 1), The Last Wave of Summer (October 1998, No. 1), No Plans (April 2012), The Perfect Crime (October 2015) and Blood Moon (December 2019, No. 1). Their top 10 singles are "Forever Now" (1982), "Hands Out of My Pocket" (1994) and "The Things I Love in You" (1998).
At the ARIA Music Awards of 1993 they were inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 2001 Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), listed their single, "Khe Sanh" (May 1978), at No. 8 of the all-time best Australian songs. Circus Animals was listed at No. 4 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums (October 2010), while East appeared at No. 53. They won The Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at the APRA Music Awards of 2016. Cold Chisel's popularity is largely restricted to Australia and New Zealand, with their songs and musicianship highlighting working class life. Their early bass guitarist (1973-75), Les Kaczmarek, died in December 2008; Steve Prestwich died of a brain tumour in January 2011.
    Place Musical Career Began: Adelaide
    Musical Genres: Rock music
    Record Labels: Warner Music Group
James (Jimmy) Dixon Barnes of Glasgow via Adelaide was just 16 when he joined the band Cold Chisel in 1973.
The combination of 14 Australian Top 40 albums for Cold Chisel and 13 charting solo albums, including 17 No. 1s, gives Jimmy Barnes the highest number of hit albums of any Australian or international artist in the Australian market.

Ian Moss and Jimmy compliment each others voices so much. It's almost yin to yang. For that song to sound so aesthetically pleasing it's Mossy's low, to Jimmy's harmonies that make that song truly hauntingly beautiful. Let's also give credit to Don Walker, an absolute guru and storyteller. No one writes lyrics like him. He had the ability to truly encapsulate Australian history. I can't believe I live in the same timeline as Cold Chisel.

Hey my request here. I know you did this song with Jimmy & Farnham, but I reckon it was a trash effort from Jimmy in that song. To me, this is how the song is supposed to be performed, as incredible as Farnham is, Ian Mosses vocals on this song are absolute perfection. There's a vulnerability to them that just didn't carry over.
Then Jimmy comes and kicks the walls down. There's a girl in the audience there (the one that screams at the end), you can see how moved she is by it. She wouldn't even have been born when the song came out.
Cold Chisel is part of the Australian fabric.
Those 11 minutes waiting for the 4 minute mark of the song had me giggling.

It's Ian Moss, there's two singers in it. Ian Moss is also a very good singer. His song Tuckers daughter is good but he hasn't had anywhere near the success Jimmy has had. lmfao I feel like I am responding too much but this is the last one, I am going to address 7:24 .. I could send you 100 tracks where he belts over E5 in chest, the Tina video as I said has a pretty much 90% pure chest f5, which is the note Tina gives a thumbs up to, but I could send you way too many videos. The difference is that Jimmy's voice is heavy, and generally speaking heavy, dramatic voices need to thin a lot more in the chest to hit the notes. The f5 in the Tina video though, is pretty much all in chest. Obviously, you'd pick Johny to cover the high notes in a tenor/tenor duet but he has a light, more agile voice, and he thins a lot faster. Also the thing is with Jimmy's rasp.I have mentioned this before hand, he has cleaner notes in his youth before he started doing drugs; it then developed into the rasp you heard on the Tina video, and then it developed to the harsh drill like sound; and not to say he 'a rock star' doesn't scream on occasions like every other rock star, but he belted a G5 in the bside of 'Boys cry out for war' that is crystal clear, even by John Farnham standards; so the haters can't tarnish his vocal ability because he had Crystal clear belts in his prime from 1978 - 1984 era.
