You're welcome! Definitely use long cabled circular needles for that sort of thing. You might want to consider making the blanket modular and then kitchner stitch it together. In other works. Knit large fabric panels and sew them together to complete your blanket. Kind of like how you would do granny squares only on a larger basis. Knitting a full sized blanket is a HUGE undertaking in terms of the size and weight. I hope that helps!
I was going to see how long the duvet cover is, then use a measuring tape as a guide. I am knitting a twin size long for my wonderful husband for his birthday. He doesn’t like the insert that he has now in the duvet. So does your advice still applies to this idea? If so is there a video that maybe you can recommend that can help me in such a short time? @@BeautifulByInspiration Gosh, that's still pretty big! I don't make knitting videos anymore so I don't have that on my channel. But however you would sew crochet fabrics together, you can do it similarly for knitting. I definitely recommend a chunky yarn and just do garter stitch with is knit every stitch so it will lay flat and be faster for you to make. But that's not a fast project. I'm not sure how many 100s of stitches you would have to cast on for it to be wide enough, but at least 200. That's if you make it in one large fabric. Are you sure you don't want to make him a nice scarf instead? I do have instructions for that. pattymacmakes.com/easy-scarf-knitting-pattern-for-beginners/ If you make the scarf it could be ready by Thanksgiving. I hope this helps!
Great video! I was having a bit of a quandary because I've only started knitting a while ago and doing the math for how much it would cost me to buy individual straight needles AND circular needles of varying lengths... yikes! Suddenly those interchangeable knitting kits look like a bargain. Also appreciated the bit about your knitting style. I love the internet because it's allowed me to learn to knit, but speaking to people who learned from their grandmother or whoever and learned continental knitting - I've actually had someone argue with me that throwing the yarn is a "bad habit" and not a legitimate style of knitting. It was enough work programming my brain to understand how to hold my needles, and I'm perfectly happy to knit this way.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Megan!! Oh yes, throwing yarn is a legitimate style of knitting and nothing wrong with doing it that way. People are extremely opinionated about knitting, so take stuff with a grain of salt. We all knit in our own way. It's like handwriting and we all hold the pen differently and form our letters in a unique way. Knitting is no different. Good interchangeable sets are definitely worth it. I personally knit using the same couple of sizes because I like certain weights of yarn, so my needle collection is not huge. I have straights in a couple of sizes because I like knitting scarves on straight needles. I think it's a neater finish. And for in the round, I do magic loop and that needs a long cable. So, don't feel like you need to buy every needle size in every conglomeration. You might find you only like one weight of yarn and then you don't need all those needles. Focus on finding what yarn you like the best and what projects you like to make. Not everyone knits everything. I only knit accessories so I don't need things for knitting sweaters. And I prefer a heavy weight yarn to fine, so mostly I have larger needles. We all like different projects. So find what you like to make. Don't feel like you "have" to knit sweaters and giant shawls out of fingering weight yarn. You can knit chunky cowls or hats and it's perfectly fine.
Sometimes. It's so helpful to knit larger flat pieces like blankets this way. You really can't get the stitches onto straight needles past a certain cast on, anyway. I would recommend you give it a try with super bulky weight yarn and see what you think. Casting on say 50 stitches and knit back and forth just like any flat fabric but with the circular needles to get the hang of it. If you continue, it will make a very nice baby blanket! I hope that helps.
I didn't get it at the point you were finished demonstrating BUT I listened to the end and you did pick up the work on the circular needles knitting flat. Thank you I did get the visual I needed! I'm making an egg apron!

Annette Hachey I totally understand Annette! I started out knitting my fingerless mitts with ribbing on the ends and stockinette body. Then you are basically knitting the same glove twice. So I would suggest making a few of those first. The cable pattern I have is designed so that it’s one pattern but works on both hands. ❤️❤️ I’m knitting new mitts right now and they are the basic robbing and stockinette. I like to knit a few new pairs for myself for each fall and winter. I need to get back to tutorials and walk people through making that transition from flat and seam to knit in the round.

They are tricky on fingerless mitts because of the thumb gussets, but a scarf is pretty easy. I have a pattern for a cable cowl and some video instruction here. I'm a little nervous about switching to circulars knitting flat fingerless gloves with a cable where your having to knit a right and left glove.
