    Nice! I do subassemblies too, but I attach his legs to the base, so I can paint the inside of the robes and then stick him to the legs with Blu Tack to get a hold of the model to finish painting. Then take him back off his legs to do the base at the end! I also leave the backpacks separate to make life easier, they are all unique enough to match them up at the end using the instructions :) Praise the Omnissiah!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +16

      You know, the funny thing is that despite having just done a video on subassemblies, it'd not even occurred to me to just leave him off his legs to paint the inside of the coat! It's funny how many ways there are of getting around the same problem. :D Glory to the Omnissiah, and may your calculations ever be without recurring decimals.

      Irrational numbers are a heretical mote in the eye of our glorious Omnissiah! Tom's comment was exactly the way I did it. Still trying to decide if that means I'm not crazy or if crazy is so commonplace it replicates.

      The Skitarii are a lot of fun once you get into them. The miniatures can be kinda daunting since there's a ton of weird detail, but just going step by step lets you work through and by the time you realise it, that Agrax Earthshade is drying... :D

      There's a lot happening on the Skitarii miniatures, but you can use the fact that they're very busy to your advantage if you're willing to skip a few details! It doesn't hurt the overall effect, I think, and the techniques used are easy to replicate. Just a little water and some paint and you're done!

    I do these guys a different way that really seems to help me out. I assemble everything on the upper torso and leave it separate. Then, I attach the legs to the base, do all my basing, and do all of the priming, painting and detail on the trousers and base. Moving on to the torso, I do the inside of the robe, then attach the upper torso to the completed legs and base. The only thing I have to worry with then is the exterior of the upper torso and it really helps me avoid having to do extensive clean up.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 років тому +1

      It's funny that everyone seems to have a different way of doing it - just goes to show there's no 'right' way of approaching any of this, as long as it works for you! :D Might try your method in the future, to be honest, since it'd probably be a little cleaner overall than having to glue him to the base later.

    Good clear explanation for painting Skitarii. Took me 5 months of trial and error to get the process of painting my first miniature squad down to an art form., which happen to be Skitarii. In the end I went for painting each piece separate . Legs stuck on the base, build the base textures and details around the feet. Only once every part was painted, I would assemble them and then do the shading, highlighting and finer details.

    I've watched 4 or 5 painting tutorial videos and consulted with the GW painting app. Everyone has a slightly different painting scheme for painting Mars Skitarii, but the end result all end up looking very similar. Makes no sense to me that Duncan Rhodes based with Chaos Black, seems silver is the biggest time saver. Of course I based all 36 of my Rangers/ Vanguard and Infiltrators prior to watching this video :-(

      I know this seems like a lot, but I seriously recommend a basic set of acrylics from Reeves, etc. I paint with a combo of GW shades & Vellajo/Reeves acrylics and I can paint almost anything for a fraction of the cost.
      Plus it helped me to learn colour mixing and what matches what, etc.

    • @taserrr
      @taserrr 3 роки тому

      This is 2 years late, however if somebody reads this with the same issues, you really only need a handful of paints to make every colour. Just get normal white and black and the 3 primary colours red, yellow and blue. With those 5 you can make any colours you want. Outside of that you can wash them down yourself for washes and the only thing I can think of that doesn't work are metallic paints like metal colours, gold, silver etc.
      I recommend Valejo, great dropper bottles that are less pricey than citadel and will last you longer. Also don't buy citadel white paint, they dry up way to fast.

    Another great tutorial on what are quite intimidating models to paint. Nice one Sonic! Are you painting full units of these or just one offs?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +3

      I mostly end up doing these as one-offs, since I need to prioritize my time away from the camera to paint as well! In the case of the Skitarii, though, I'll be doing a couple of units of them to support my Mars-aligned Imperial Knight. Nothing huge, but enough to slot nicely on to a larger Imperial force. :)

    Rather than not gluing him to his base, I just glue his legs to the base, and leave his torso/jacket/head assembly separate, then glue that to my 'coatrack assembly' (which is a spare base that I've created a sort of spire of sprue out of ) which acts as an easy spraying platform as well as something to stick into my painting handle. Then it's as easy as cutting him off the coat rack, using a scraper on the paint that is where the glue will go, and gluing him together!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому

      It turns out everybody seems to have a different method of getting to the back of that jacket, and I'm really interested seeing how people tackle it differently. I think yours might be a better idea than mine, since gluing plastic to plastic's a safer bond overall. Time to make a coat rack out of spare sprue, I guess! :D

    • @davidzeile6241
      @davidzeile6241 6 років тому +1

      I use that same stalk of sprue for a lot of stuff actually. I recently had sanguinary guard jump packs tacked onto it so i could get into the fiddly bits, and sometimes stick an odd head on top of it when it's gonna get primed a different way, etc.

    Painting these models can be tough, because most videos you see on how to paint them involve citadel paints. I only own a couple of these paints, mainly washes, so it takes some color matching to get the colors as close as possible.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 роки тому

      Try and lever the foot from near the contact point rather than twisting up higher on the leg. Otherwise you can slip a knife under there, but be careful. I've started using double-sided tape on a bit of cork recently - much easier to deal with!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +1

      Good question! If you're looking for them to be black, I'd probably stick to a dark grey colour on the inside - something like Eshin Grey, perhaps. Then pick something sharp for contrast elsewhere, like a red trim on the corner of the jackets or something? I'd be curious to see what you decide!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +1

      I usually start from Leadbelcher spray. You could just as easily start from a grey or black primer and paint that on, though! The bonus of Leadbelcher is that it's a fairly good mid-tone itself, so all the colours you'll use will cover over it pretty well.

      Not especially? The head and cap are all one piece. It might seem a little fiddly to get to the very back of it for one coat of paint, but versus the time saved in assembling in different parts, painting the heads on a little spike or something... naaah, just knock it on there and be careful when you're painting for literally twenty seconds. ;) It's about saving effort overall.

      It's a bit of a bugger with plastic glue, really; that join's pretty fearsome if it's glued in place properly. I usually end up destroying one part or the other. It's just a case of picking which bit I want to save more, unfortunately!

    • @Caboose816
      @Caboose816 6 років тому +2

      Peninsula Painting Projects With plastic glue, you're pretty much screwed, as plastic glue melts the two pieces and makes them one like welding. If you're using super glue (I use Gorilla Glue myself), pop it in the freezer for a hour or two. The little bit of moisture in the glue will expand as it freezes, making the bond brittle, so you can (normally, not all the time) just pop the piece off.
