    Not living offgrid full time anymore but Ryobi saved my butt countless times. I would have killed for this thing last summer. Might still be useful for vanlife/offgrid down the road. Cheaper than the Dometic model a lot of mobile living types use and way more portable. Between this and the "solar generator" Ryobi is really making my year so far.

    The fact that you can use ice too is great because the other electric coolers usually don't let you use ice.

    • @Entropy512
      @Entropy512 Рік тому +2

      Huh? I've always used ice in my Coleman powered cooler. Since it's a Peltier cooler, it can really only maintain ice/slow down its melting, it can't cool things down in the first place very well.

    Just seems like a neat idea for those that already run Ryobi stuff.
    Didn't see it on Ryobi's site, do the batteries charge if they are connected and the cooler is plugged into 110 or 12v? That would be pretty handy for things like solar inverters or solar generators, so that when the sun was out you'd not only power the cooler, but you'd also be charging the onboard batteries for night.
    Would also be nice to not have to bring a separate charger.
    Plus, if it was plugged into a switched 12v like a lot of foreign vehicles, you'd not need to worry about killing the vehicle battery by leaving it plugged in.

  • @603me.
    @603me. Рік тому +2

    It all depends on the use case.
    I was looking at the Makita and some of the other 12v refrigerators for camping. Capacity to price was one of my concerns.
    But then it hit me that I didn't need to reinvent the wheel. The reality is that when the family goes camping, it's not going to be somewhere without electric on site. I don't need ruggedness for going off road/grid. A regular mini fridge would suit me just fine.
    Pack it and pre cool the night before, then it goes into the car last. Add a collapsible hand truck for mobility. And then, of course, it's still a fridge I can use at home.
    But obviously that wouldn't work for somebody else's situation, and this Ryobi might fit their needs.

    you have to season all coolers for optimal cooling. toss a bag of ice in them the night before you load your also cooled items up. get like 2 more days of ice retention in a good rotomolded cooler like a yeti or whichever of the 1,000 versions out there. this isnt bad for $500, a little small id say but if you want such a portable fridge you dont have a ton of options.

    Looks like it was built by Alpicool as it has the same parts. The Alpicool is way less money. I paid $350 for a 50 + quart Alpicool with two independently temp controlled sides that can be used as a refrigerator and freezer. It does not run on battery. But for the extra $150 you could buy a portable power unit and still have a much larger portable fridge.

    I got into Ryobi with the misting bucket fan and the USB charger for camping so it was pretty logical for me to get this.
    I'm hoping ryobi do a slightly bigger one with solar charging, if only one battery is being used to power the fridge, the other battery should be able to charge. when the battery operating the fridge dies it should automatically swaps to the one that's been on charge, giving it the ability to run all day without having to check on it and swap batteries

Some of the portable fridges from other companies allow you to have it so many degrees off level before the compressor gets mad by having it on a hinge. I really want to like this cooler, but $500 for a cool with very little room is a bit crazy. Add to that you half to mess around with batteries and cords.
    I think a good quality cooler and a bag of ice will beat this 9 out of 10 times, at least.
    I can't really dream up a situation where this is a better option than a normal cooler or a normal car powered cooler. Even then, you could use the tool batteries on an inverter to power the electric cooler.... now you have an inverter! For all that other electric stuff.
