same thing with me man i am so interesting in this game series , and jeremy has done a great explanations and because of them i have had a great time finding out more about the metal gear franchise.
It's never stated outright, so its easy to miss. After you fight Ocelot, call EVA. She explains how one of his parents was a legendary war hero, and that his mother was shot in the gut and forced to give birth to him on the battlefield. When she was stitched back up, she had a scar shaped like a snake. In The Boss' finale speech, she reveals a snake-shaped scar, and how her son was taken away after she was injured and forced to give birth in battle. I love MGS for these minor details.
Metal Gear Rising is definitely a game worth checking out. It doesn't negate Raidens resolution at all, but expands on it very well. Especially considering his very unusual circumstances. It also it's nice to get a glimpse of a post-patriot world, and Sunny makes an appearance, which is nice too.
+TimeKeeper25 not really, in mgs 4 the world is basically broken, so in rising raiden takes over solid's mantle, and uses his body and skills, to help weaker countries that want to become better, normally you assume protecting it from wannabes warlords and the like, but then things get problematic and he is forced to became what he once was... in a way, it less him erasing what he became in the end of 4, and more him, accepting who he was, before mgs 2(something he was really trying to forget), in some ways, its kinda like Rikku in kingdom hearts chain of memories arch...
I know this video is 2 years old and all but I don't know if you were made aware of this, Jeremy, but in 1972 when the Sons of Big Boss were made, he wasn't in a coma. Yes, in MGS1, Liquid tells Solid that their father was in a coma but that was a translation error. In the original script (Japanese) what Liquid really says is: "an injury father sustained in combat left him sterile. So they created us from his cells... with a combination of 20th century analog cloning and the Super Baby Method." Rather than: " father was wounded in combat and already in a coma when they brought him in. So they created us from his cells... with a combination of 20th century analog cloning and the Super Baby Method." So yeah, the coma Big Boss goes into at the end of Ground Zeroes is his first ever. So he's only had two comas in his life time, including his 1999 induced coma from Dr. Clark.
I really appreciate this Jeremy. I don't think many reviewers are dedicated enough to make a video correcting themselves. Please keep doing what you do
I half agree. Kinda ridiculous that Raiden himself is an anti-metal gear weapon (or should be considered one given the boss fight against... Ray?). And the politician at the end is super-ridiculous, in a pretty fun way- but not in a way I can take him seriously...
And those stealth segments were super-tacked-on and didn't really feel functional. Like the way Raiden controlled didn't mesh with hiding gameplay very well, IMO

I'm sure a lot of peoples already said that in other comments, but Rising is really worth playing, it doesn't negate the resolution in 4, it let you see what the world has become after the end of the patriots, and personally i really get that Metal Gear vibe from the story, it's not Solid level, more straightforward, but even then it has a better story than a lot of games, and you can easily see Kojima touch in it. But the means to get the M47 is a trial in itself and thats the thing, in order to realistically beat everything you have to go on a wild goose chase of beating hard missions perfectly to obtain items to beat harder missions perfectly and so on and so forth.

I thought the reason Raiden came back was a fairly decent reason. He joined a peace keeping PMC in order to help the world. The guy was trained to do this type of stuff; he doesn't know much else. Yes, I would have liked to see his family in it but they still keep Raiden's character and his arc fairly consistent.
Jeremy you are awesome but as long as Kojima is directly involved with a MGS game there will be no such plot inconsistencies, and I love the fact that jeremy actually took the time to make a new video about it instead of just "fixing" his older video with silly text boxes. RESPECT man keep up the good work ! oh... and go and play Metal Gear Revengance once its price drops to like 20 or 30 then I would say it is worth getting. Looking forward for more videos C=
A cyborg ninja freak like Raiden won't able to find a job to feed his family. Despite the heartfelt scene in 4, the reality has it that a bit further in his life he's gotta have to go back and do what he does bet. Sure you wanna pause Raiden's story as it was in 4, I could understand.
"Afterwards, Raiden was sent to a hospital where he was fitted with a new cybernetic body that featured artificial skin, giving him a somewhat more human appearance" This is what I am talking about, uh huh he's still a cyborg.
Antonio Protonotario Magaña Rising is my favorite Metal Gear...THERE I SAID IT!!!! It's actually a good hack and slash game and it fits Raiden's character like a glove. Now he's no longer in the Shadow of the Snakes and can do his own thing.
+Billy Becks (Cool-Scare-Crow) Big Boss is sterile due to exposure to radiation (I THINK it's mentioned in Snake Eater). The line about him being in a coma was a mistranslation in MGS1
Jeremy Rising is a spin-off so it might not be canon, besides you DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING! Rising is a fantastic game, just check out some gameplay and you will understand! The game is simply, an experience!
There's not a universe in existence where the words "it doesn't represent my idea of a post-Patriots world" mean that it's been confirmed as canon by Kojima.
Instead of releasing Ground Zeroes as a seperate game and making it extremely short, they should've waited, and made "Ground Zeroes" the first act of The Phantom Pain. Kojima has been acting very strangely lately.
He explained that it was the plan but since Phantom Pain is so huge he doesn't know when it'll even be done so he made Ground Zeroes so people kind of know what is to come in a way.
You should totally do a MGS chronology video where you kinda discuss the entire story of MGS leading up to your predictions for what the Phantom Pain will be about!!
Don't worry about it. That's sort of the point of the codec for Metal Gear. You get tons of backstory for when you have time to listen to it. Nobody gets all the conversations the first time, so it helps the replayability.
Now that I think about it, this is pretty common when reviewing the events in any MGS game. There is just so much story, lectures, slideshows, montages... Yeah a shit ton of information that you got to follow not just upon review but actively know! Anyways thanks Jeremy! As always your vids are awesome! Thanks for the corrections?
oh well, I didn't know Ocelot was the son of The Boss, until you mentioned it in your Snake eater review. I hence replayed the game and found that particular line of dialogue, but it is a bit unsettling how easy one can miss such details.
So, I've never played any Metal Gear game ever, but I am extremely interested in the story. I do not have the time to play them, nor will I probably ever get the chance. You should do a video recapping the whole story throughout all the games, going game by game and explaining what happens and who the characters are. Like I said I am extremely interested in the story, but its hard to pick up on what your talking about with all these gaps in my knowledge lol.
Two years ago, I understood nothing what Jeremy said. Two years later, after reading the story and watching a lot of Metal Gear Solid gameplay video, I finally understand what Jeremy is talking about. :)
Jeremy, you have no idea how excited you've made me to think that Solidus might have a part in this game. He's always been my favorite (apart from Solid Snake and Big Boss, of course) and it saddens me that he is so often dismissed as a generic bad guy when there was significant depth to his character. Come to think of it, his role in MGS5 might help us better understand his expressed admiration for Big Boss. Who knows? I am so ready to find out. The release of MGS5 can't come soon enough.
JJ you are easily one of may favourite youtubers you make great videos and admit and accept you make mistakes (you are human) also I recommend you review/play the bioshock series
Well as I understand it, the coma mentioned on Metal Gear Solid was actually a translation error. The original Japanese dialogue only mentioned that Big Boss was sterile when the project to clone him took place. One of the central themes of the games is information manipulation. One can just imagine that Liquid Snake didn't know the truth about his creation. That is for those who may feel the need to have an explanation to the English error.
Hey, Jeremy. This link might help answer some of your questions. It looks like Psycho Mantis will appear in Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain according to the Metal Gear Wikia entry on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
@Kyle Haggerty True , true . As far as I have read Solid Snake took big bosses skills as a soldier and combatant while Liquid took his expertise as a strategist and tactician . solidus the. Is the perfect blend of both
peace doesnt last for ever you know, of course there would be war sometime after. even if there is peace there is bound to be some conflict sooner or later, people just cant live life without having pointless fights.these pointless fights resulting in war and death. after there is peace again someone else will cause an issue. its not to far off reality when thinking about it like this. so it wasnt unnecessary at all. besides, ive liked raiden since mgs2. mgs4 just made him a badass :p
honestly, there is soooooooooooooooooooooo much detail regarding the metal gear franchise that I don't blame or penalize jeremy for not knowing all the information. In fact in his MGS4 review he didn't really know exactly how that theory with Ocelot and his arm worked, but he accepted it as, one theory happened, and now its this theory, when really they both did apply, but it was a REALLLY! hard detail to find!
Yea, when you think about it it makes since. He was turned into a cyborg, he couldn't just stop being a cyborg and work at White Castle. Yet still, in Rising Raiden kinda reverts into a bloodthirsty stage he was in before we met him MGS2. He also up's and leaves his Wife and son, only really mentioning them once in cut scenes (unless there was more info in the codex) I'll say that any progression or regression of his character in Rising fits with his mind set of running away from his past.
I respect you opinion Jeremy on Rising but i feel after playing Rising that actually it doesn't negate the resolution of Raiden, after all he is just working as a bodyguard in the begining to gain money for his family. The thing just get complicated, is not like he desided to go war just for it its that he was trapped in the work. Also what else could you see Raiden working on? He is 90% a machine of war, that make it pretty dificult for him to chose. Anyway good video as always.
Lol, this is why I love you Jeremy. No homo. I can tell this bugged you to the point where you felt you needed to make this. But thank you for updating this for us. 35 hours. Lol
Jeremy, I don't know what you heard but MGS the Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes are basically put together to made Metal Gear Solid 5. Hideo Kojima specified this in an interview and presentation of a game. They aren't two separate games!
Big boss having a prosthetic arm would make sense because if you look at his hands in MGS 4 (and character profile in MGS 1), he has his hands covered up with gloves so you cant see it.
Please kind sir, could you explain to me how he plugs a machine in his chest? It's been bothering me since the first time I saw it. FYI, I am not a Metal Gear player, so I now nothing of the lore.
There is second continuity issue. Big Boss allegedly wakes up in 1983 from this second coma, 12 years before Zanzibar Land. Problem is, he was saving Grey Fox a second time in Mozambic in 1977.
Well said. That and Raiden needed a job. I don't know what everyone expected Raiden to do to survive after MGS4. The man has a family to take care of, so this is just a natural progression of the character. The best qualifications he has for a job is personal military service (PMS...yeah they don't call it that, but a joke is made about it in a codec conversation) which puts Raiden's cybernetic body to the best use. I consider Metal Gear Rising a on the job side story for Raiden.
@JeremyJahns on a different note. Are you going to do a preview video for Injustice Gods Among Us? Just curious as I know your a fan of MK but I figured you might have more vids on this new fighter. Can't wait though it will be awesome.
Yep, ever since I first saw one of his reviews I started watching another and another and by the time I looked at the window it was dark outside. He has the exact same thoughts as me on most movie/gaming related issues. Like his magnus opus review about ME3's original ending.
What was Big Boss's first coma? I don't recall him being in any others than the ground zeroes helicopter explosion coma and Solid Snake severely burning him in MG2.
HairyHog Correct me if I am wrong, but after Snake Eater and before Portable Ops, Snake joined the Patriots and he meets Eva again and while on a mission he was badly damage and went into, I believe, a one year coma after he woke up, he learns that his blood was taken from him and they used it to make clones out of him. That is when he goes his separate ways from The patriots or Zero
Don't feel bad about missing that conversation with Miller. You have to S rank every single mission (yes, including the extra ops) in order to unlock it. I did it, but I'm sure most people wouldn't even bother, to try and do that. It is mentioned in 3 however, before the credits role when it lists the events that would happen later and that the sons of Big Boss are born in 1972 and PW takes place in 1974. MGS4 mentions that that was the final straw that caused BB to leave Zero and branch off.
I played Rising and in all honesty its a good game. I wouldn't say it negates the ending of MSG4 it actually starts shortly after MSG4, so in a way its a continuation. But if you don't want to play it I can totally understand and I wouldn't be surprised if they continued Rising as a Raiden story arc, not giving any spoilers though, but he does change. A lot.
I had no idea of that either. I thought the most important tape was the one from Eva explaining the Boss's life story about her going into space. Gonna youtube it now lol
The metal gear timeline goes like this: 1972-Les Enfants Terribles project 1974-Peace Walker Incident 1995-Outer Heaven Uprising So ground zeroes most likely happened in mid-1970's or later. And then the Phantom pain in the late 1980's
Just worked out what was missing for this Metal Gear game; it was the sneaking. There are a couple of times in Rising were you do need to sneak by but man they make it hard to do in this game. Yeah you get cardboard boxes and drums but almost useless sometimes and its a pain to have to hold the button rather then in the old games were you just have to equip them.
I have no idea what you're talking about, but I do know a Tsuchinoko is a legendary snake-like cryptid from Japan often known as bachi hebi. Tsuchinoko are described as being between 30 and 80 centimetres in length, similar to a snake, but with a central girth that is much wider than its head or tail, and as having fangs and venom similar to that of a viper. They taste outstanding & will recover your stamina, so do you fancy a snack? (response to your last comment, too good to waste). =D
I'm kinda bummed that hes not going to review or even play Metal Gear Rising.because i found it really fun even though i was skeptical at first, but I'm going to respect his designation for not playing it
If I may say so Jeremy, Metal gear: Rising doesn't negate the closure from 4 in any way, Raiden's story overall isn't affected, its completely and utterly separate from the rest of the franchise, it is its own thing, you should play it, its a very good game.
the whole point about big boss's story (mgs games where you play as big boss) is about heroes and villains and what the true beliefs of big boss were. A bunch of people can try and summarize this for you but its better and more entertaining if you play or re-play the entire series to understand if you still dont understand then all i can say is that metal gear solid may just not click with you which is very agreeable because the overall story throughout the entire saga is over convoluted
I read a theory that "Ishmael", the Kiefer Sutherland figure is Big Boss. It explains the fact that while Big Boss is on the ground crawling, Ishmael does nothing to help him because he is part of his own mind. According to the theory, Big Boss has been reliving the trauma from Mother Base's destruction for 9 years, and Ishmael is a character he created in his mind to help him cope. Also, if you listen to what BB says at the start of the gameplay, it sounds like Kiefer.
The weird thing about the "the sons of big boss" is that it will be Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus snake and all of the forms were produce by Big mama cause we all played MGS4
I'm sure Snake capping his skull in front of Big Boss' grave would've gotten the "closing circle" point across as well, and edited out 30 minutes worth of cutscenes. Snake got his resolution. He gets to live in peace. Raiden was supposed to have his resolution, with him returning to his family. Even Kojima said Rising conflicts with what he had in mind for what happens post-MGS4. Search "Hideo Kojima Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Interview - Raiden, Open World and Assassin's Creed."
I like Metal Gear Rising. It's not like the other Metal Gear games and yeah you feel like Snake's words to Raiden at the end were kind of nulled but thinking more into it it's more like after Solid Snake's gone there's no one else that can protect the world save Raiden. And him clashing with enemies of peace and learning more of Raiden's past is also awesome. Plus getting to play in Gray Fox's armor and use the FOX Blade is epic as hell :D
Kind of funny about missing the dialogue in Peace Walker, Kojima does this kind of stuff all the time. Like in Snake Eater, he totally jammed the fact that The Boss is Ocelot's mother into enough of a peripheral part of the game - that somehow I missed it.
Except for the fact that you see Mother Base from Ground Zeroes burn to the ocean floor. You see Miller and Boss all fucked up in the helicopter. And you see them on the operating table post helicopter crash as Boss goes into his coma which leads into Phantom Pain, but it's one narrative.
I have never played a Metal Gear game in my life, so I have no clue what Jeremy is talking about.
Still had fun with the video…

Jeremy, i'd love to hear your opinion on Bioshock Infinite. In my opinion, that game is fucking art.
Rising does explain why Raiden goes back to the battlefield. Did you expect him to be a stay-at-home dad after MGS4 ?
I heard kojima say the other day in an interview that there is only 1 coma that snake goes through and that it will all make sense when the phantom pain comes out
Maybe the coma thing was another lie. Wouldn't be surprising in a game about espionage and conspiracy.
Allen Babylon no he really went into a comma - just one comma.
RedNosePitbullMT No, no. I meant the idea of two comas was a lie. There was really only one.

Despite the heartfelt scene in 4, the reality has it that a bit further in his life he's gotta have to go back and do what he does bet. Sure you wanna pause Raiden's story as it was in 4, I could understand.
What are you talking about? At the end of MGS4 Raiden has a perfectly good human body.
"Afterwards, Raiden was sent to a hospital where he was fitted with a new cybernetic body that featured artificial skin, giving him a somewhat more human appearance" This is what I am talking about, uh huh he's still a cyborg.
Do a peace walker review, please!
This Video shows dedication.
Good job, Mr. Jahns.
Man I loved Rising.
Ok, now you're just trolling..
Antonio Protonotario Magaña Rising is my favorite Metal Gear...THERE I SAID IT!!!! It's actually a good hack and slash game and it fits Raiden's character like a glove. Now he's no longer in the Shadow of the Snakes and can do his own thing.
Kojima said he had just one coma. The coma that liquid was talking about in MGS1 was actually a mistranslation from the japanese version to english.
+123Kinow So in MGS1, Big Boss wasn't in a coma?
+Billy Becks (Cool-Scare-Crow) Big Boss is sterile due to exposure to radiation (I THINK it's mentioned in Snake Eater). The line about him being in a coma was a mistranslation in MGS1
+Billy Becks (Cool-Scare-Crow)
Big Boss was in a medically induced coma after they recovered his body at the end of MG2 Solid Snake.
So 2 comas.
Something is off, Kojima stated that Big Boss was only in 1 coma.
Billy Becks He had the Coma in MGS5, But he was in an induced Coma at some point after MG2 up til the end of MGS4
Jeremy Rising is a spin-off so it might not be canon, besides you DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING! Rising is a fantastic game, just check out some gameplay and you will understand! The game is simply, an experience!
There's not a universe in existence where the words "it doesn't represent my idea of a post-Patriots world" mean that it's been confirmed as canon by Kojima.
imagine if Jeremy does a let's play of mgs 5. and then a review of it. that would make my year
Instead of releasing Ground Zeroes as a seperate game and making it extremely short, they should've waited, and made "Ground Zeroes" the first act of The Phantom Pain. Kojima has been acting very strangely lately.
He explained that it was the plan but since Phantom Pain is so huge he doesn't
know when it'll even be done so he made Ground Zeroes so people kind of know what is to come in a way.
I'd rather wait another year and have one long game.
silentwolfSW97 its more like 2-3 years.
Donovaneagle2098 Why 2-3? Ground zeroes already came out and soon mgsv. so we would've just waited one more year.
we still don't have a release date, and at the time it was rumored to be years out. that comment was a while back.
You should totally do a MGS chronology video where you kinda discuss the entire story of MGS leading up to your predictions for what the Phantom Pain will be about!!
It's almost like...
Spoilers...
...there were two big boss'...
Don't worry about it. That's sort of the point of the codec for Metal Gear. You get tons of backstory for when you have time to listen to it. Nobody gets all the conversations the first time, so it helps the replayability.
***** please play revengeance so you can make fun of the storyline lol
It's really no wonder that you missed the last recording of Kaz talking to Cipher, since you can only get it as a last bonus after doing EVERYTHING.
Oh this made me laugh - as always, love the delivery dude. Keep it up!
Playing through all of he entire Metal Gear series. Can't wait to get to Peace Walker. Never even heard of til I bought the MG multipack.
Very good video Jeremy, Miller mentions in Peace Walker that the sons are two years old so yeah.
Hell yeah! A Jeremy Jahns vid on my Birthday!
JJ you are easily one of may favourite youtubers
you make great videos and admit and accept you make mistakes (you are human)
also I recommend you review/play the bioshock series
Only Jeremmy knows how to talks nerdy subjects in an awesome way :p
You're a good man Jeremy. You own up to your mistakes. Not many youtubers get off their high horse to correct that.
Actually, the most important part of peace walker, Kaz introduces Snake to the Tank Box
JJ i had no idea you were such a Metal gear fan, but that ending in 5...NO SANE MAN COULD DEFEND IT!
+Starving Wolf ...pst...pst...he defended it.
I know he did lol
Jeremy, your videos are awesome and addictive. That is all :)
I love when people try deciphering Kojima's insane mind :)
Hi Jeremy
Good review, please review older Movies again. Because there are a lot to still review, that we haven't seen yet.
Regards
Gerann
You gotta do a video about your thoughts on all the new metal gear trailers and story so far! Ps your vids are awesome!
honestly, there is soooooooooooooooooooooo much detail regarding the metal gear franchise that I don't blame or penalize jeremy for not knowing all the information.
35 hours. Lol
Agreed here. Also it is stated that cyborgs are not that well accepted in the public eye, that's why it's hard for them to be a family Raiden.
Jeremy! You said you were gonna have a video about David not being Snake or Big Boss anymore on Monday... it didn't happen.. what a let down.
That must be it.
This is why we love you Jeremy. Now review Peace Walker itself and Bioshock Infinite and we'll love you more for it. ;)
MGS4 mentions that that was the final straw that caused BB to leave Zero and branch off.
well, can't believe one year has almost passed,, time flies
Took the words right out of my mouth, or rather the keys off of my keyboard.
This is the most passionate video thus far! This was more passionate than sammiches as april o'neal!
I would love to watch you play through the Metal Gear games
This is why you are the Best JJ my boy.
It's cool Jeremy... I never heard that dialogue before this video either and I'm a huge MGS freak.
The metal gear timeline goes like this:
1972-Les Enfants Terribles project
1974-Peace Walker Incident
1995-Outer Heaven Uprising
So ground zeroes most likely happened in mid-1970's or later.
