Then there may be no great love stories, as these stories usually stop at the climax of their relationship. “There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it.”

He's actually only a few years older than her, so around 16.
The play is well aware of the fact that they move so fast in their relationship, and even Friar Lawrence calls them out on it and warn them about it. Their impulsive relationship is a large part of the story's theme, and contributes greatly to their eventual deaths.

so in a couple of words: a 18 year old man falls blindly in love with a 13 year old girl after meeting her only once, causing the man's best friend and the girls nephew to die in a duel, after which the 13 year old girl takes the man's side, even though she had only met him once, instead of her families side. They get married imediately after that, the man get's banished, but manages to sneak back in only one a couple of days later, right after the 13 year old girl was supposed to marry the 25 year old man but decides to fake her own death which, after it let to some miscommunication, caused the death of the 25 year old man, after which the 18 year old man killed himself. The 13 year old woke up, saw the 18 year old man whom she knew for about a week now lying dead, and decides to kill herself as well.
You know, i actually can understand how this was perceived as preposterous bullcrap.

I don't think the play ever specifically gives Romeo's age. Also though you got the jest of the play you did mix up the order of events. Romeo kills Tybalt after he has just married Juliet. It is ridiculous if you look at the play from the lovers perspective, but I always thought the sentiment of the play had more to do with the fact that the families hate for each other cost them their only children. More of a moralistic tale on how such prejudice and hate would only lead to despair.

    • @donnyjones6717
      @donnyjones6717 Рік тому

This was when you can be married off meaning when you turn 18 no questions asked thays the man you're marrying seeing this is the political and other advantageous positions combining two different families and having that connection that signify you have control or influence in the game to set you and your family up. But to make a long story short that's the tragedy that you're going to love this person and go through all this that's true love loyalty and sacrifice working things out with one another and they didn't know each other but clearly it was truly love at first sight a man that was trying to get over his ex and a girl that didn't want to marry what her father told her to marry they both found each other there and both happen to be of rival families going through all this turmoil to be with one another and they both died st the end. The greatest things that give us strength is the worse things that will weaken and kill us in all ways that's why romeos bodies cursed both families juliets family for trying to kill me Romeo people cause that's my boy Romeo and I lost my life trying to defend my brother my boy who I love again no man have greater love than this that he may lay his life down for his friends and ironically even though they weren't married they both died cause they couldn't think ot believe to be sithout the other very eerily similar to paradise lost with adam and eve in that story. A man lay down his life for his woman and she do the same for him but yet at what price does love kill you and death dint just mean you physically die again in all ways the slow erosion degradation and overall changung of you into a person b/c of that emotion that strong emotion you putting that energy that will that spirit into that emotion and unto that thing can be like a fire either warmth or burning.

If you're here to study, I'd highly suggest watching the 1996 movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. It's got some changes from the original, but it's set in the modern day so it's really easy to understand what's going on even though they're speaking Shakespearean language (you may even find yourself laughing at a few lines). Plus it's like, really good. Seriously check it out, and thank me later.

There are many instances where it is quoted or referred to in conversations, movies, or maybe with your boss one day, so it might help to know to which they are referring. In 15-20 years time it would be interesting to hear you answer your own question. I didn't mind studying Shakespeare when I was younger, I enjoyed it, not sure whether to put it down to good teaching (Mrs Morton Spalding High School) or being able to relate to the characters and themes - hot headed servants scrapping at every opportunity; juliet so young yet so stressed by what was going on in her world that she commits suicide; Friar Laurence thinking he has all the answers but his plans getting f*cked up big time, even gang rivalry (couldn't personally relate to that one, but you see it on the streets even in my rural area where neighbouring villagers hate each other).
Now (I'm 34)I can see the themes, issues, in Shakespeare are timeless, it's like 300 year sociology!

85% of the book doesn't make sense, this makes 100% sense, people say that Shakespeare is the best thing that has ever happened to the english language well i say R.I.P english because most of his work is like new words that no one has any idea what it means.

Well Shakespeare had an great influence on the british language. The story is easy to understand. Two starcrossed lovers who find their peace in eternal death, but that is not the point really. Shakespeare's language was so modern and important for poetry. Before Shakespeare the British language was pretty simple and more of a "peasant tongue." By combining old latin words with the common British tongue he more or less created a new language. Words like education (from the Latin word "educare") or to ascend (from the Latin word "ascendere") are just a few examples. Theatre was like a new magazine or tv-show in the Elizabethan age. In addition to the language, he changed the role of the woman. Before Shakespeare women were not allowed to be an actor on stage. Because of Shakespeare's plays where men were turning into women, who were turning into men throughout the whole play the status of women was influenced greatly. These are just some examples of a student who is taking a test tomorrow, but if you are not aware of the reason why Shakespeare is taught. Study him. He's interesting and much more important: His work is interesting.

You are right about Shakespeare. He may not be the worst writer but he definitely came nowhere near as a good writer. Most of his works are lazy or are copied from other people’s works. Compared to other English writer such as George Bernard, his works look like pieces of trash. It cringes me out how many people simply claim Shakespeares’ works to be masterpiece just because critics say so or because they have an great influence on British language.

@@jimmyli319 i also love it how people mistake the scottish as proper english, and theyre accents. The sad truth is that the scottish lost their own language called Gaelic, most people mistake the scottish and irish english speaking as the "true english" because they pronounce everything so differently, theres a lot of false information surrounding our education these days

  • @Nicole3900

@triplek96 It's "love at first sight." I think Romeo is ridiculous because he had been SERIOUSLY depressed over Rosaline, hiding out in the woods, moping around for days, so, so sad that she rejected him, and then he goes to the party hoping to catch a glimpse of Rosaline, sees Juliet and --BAM!! -- he forgets all about Rosaline and falls completely in love with a stranger (and later stalks her home that night and they agree to marry about 2 hours later). wow. I feel bad for Juliet.

Anyone remember that mission in Spyro 2 where you have to create bean stalks just to get to Juliet? At first I was questioning why Juliet is a bird and Romero is a worm but looking back it makes sense. In the book, the two families that Romeo and Juliet are from hate each other. In Spyro, there's a war going on between two levels. Just thought I'd point that out

Wouldn't have worked, that drug made the pulse so low, no one could've detected it. Honestly, all of this could've been avoided if the friar had used more wisdom and told Romeo not to marry someone he met they day before, even if peace between the families was the goal. They would've been better off eloping and both families would've still had to face the damage their petty feud had done. Overall, it's still an interesting story.

Well for one it uses *old* English, a dead dialect. I know from personal experience that my generation finds it sloppy how Romeo and Juliet instantly fall in love, and it is, as you stated - a *play*. Not a novel, but a dramatic piece. It's more appropriate for drama, not an English room.
