- Host Ed Sutkowski talks with Nicholas Smith who is the the beloved Mr. Rumbold from "Are You Being Served." The interview was recorded during Mr. Smith's recent visit to Peoria.
"No sane man wants his son to become an actor." So says Nicholas Smith quoting his own father.
Nicholas Smith - the character, Mr. Rumbold, of Are You Being Served? fame knew he wanted to become an actor at age seven. A family show produced by his mother gave him a taste of audience applause, and he loved it. Nicholas Smith's daughter, actress, Catherine Russell, continues the family tradition of performing. As a thespian and parent, he recounts - if one can persuade someone to not become an actor, he or she definitely should not; if he or she cannot be persuaded to do otherwise, then acting is the destination.

Nicholas Smith compares and contrasts American and British televisions, situation comedy and why performing in Shakespeare's The Tempest is a goal.
Original Air Date: 12/23/2009
Such a man of great talent. Love that British matter of factness. No false humility.
Nicholas was great as Mr. Rumbold. The whole cast was wonderful and the show one of the best ever.
Daniel Rinehart Good for you. It's one of my favourite shows of all time.
Daniel Rinehart Losing most of the cast was like losing old friends.
Daniel Rinehart I was lucky enough to pick up the boxed set of "Are You Being Served", second hand for about $70.00 a couple of years ago.
Daniel Rinehart The box set usually cost about $340.00 Canadian. I was lucky enough to buy it at a used CD-DVD store. Did you ever watch Allo, Allo?
And sadly when he died he was the last. I still enjoy watching them.
Mr. Smith was an integral part of the cast of Are You Being Served? and perhaps the most gracious foil in TV history. When Nicholas Smith passed away in late-2015 I took note and mourned along with all of the admirers of this good and decent man.
To me, he was the most interesting member of the AYBS cast. Very charismatic individual. Rest in peace Mr. Rumbold, you are now in that big boardroom in the sky.
Such an accomplished man, graced us with his great talent RIP
I saw my favorite AYBS episode, "The Father Christmas Affair", a few weeks ago. Nicholas and the cast were hilarious. There will never be another ensemble cast like them.
I have a feeling Nicholas wasn't terribly impressed by the interviewer...
Probably not
Spot on. The interview is one of the most boring I’ve witnessed yet.
The interviewer is pretty dim.
Like wading through mud.
AYBS is a phenomenon!! The cast stellar and such brillant in their roles!!!Missing them ..Such a unique success from Croft and LLoyd...
So very talented. Thank you for posting this video. He is greatly missed.
Much as I love AYBS, I love that this interviewer spends almost 20 minutes before he let it become the focus. So we get more of Nicholas Smith - who's an interesting guy!
God bless Nicholas Smith. You will be missed. R.I.P.
Amen to that !!
His character Mr. Rumbold was awesome!! RIP Nicholas!!
rest in peace Mr Nicholas Smith known as Mr rumbold the store manager of are you being served? you will be remembered. he was both a straight man and also funny himself in the show.
I was glad to bring my dear friend Nic to Chattanoga during which time this interview took place. We toured 11 different cities in just 13 days. Great tour with a great gentleman.
Denny....was Nicholas Smith your friend? How wonderful! I found AYBS back in the early 90's on PBS when we finally got cable. I fell in love. You see, I worked in Ladies Undergarment Dept just like on the show...and had just previously worked in Men's Wear! I felt as if the show was a custom "Fit" for me! I do have a question for you...you mention this was in Chattanooga, but the TV call letters match the station in Peoria IL. Could you elaborate? Would you like to share a little more of your friendship with such a talented character? We are all ears...lol Rest in Peace Nicholas Smith aka Mr. Rumbolt.
Rest IN Peace Nicholas Smith
So happy i got to see this interview the famous mr.Rumbold.mr. Smith A Great Actor!
Very sad to here that he has died the last remaining cast member of a y b s now gone R.I.P Nicholas smith
NIcholas Smith: consummate actor & great talent! Wish we had some more interviews with him & find out more about his fascinating career. Thanks for posting this!
Jug Ears RIP.
it was a decision made at [looks up] boardroom level
"Happy birthday dear uh-uh..." -- what a brilliant actor. Too bad the interviewer acts so absolutely dense.
Nicholas was a marvellous actor in Are You Being Served.
Mr. Smith must have done this interview on a bet. He was quite civil to this fool.
His character on AYBS was excellent. . Are You Being Served, my family watched the reruns, and Keeping up Appearances also. They showed it in the NYC/NJ area on Lionheart/BBC America. I'm not 100% sure but I think PBS was the network that broadcasted it at the time.
That is correct and PBS how to drive the keep the sequel on the air Are You Being Served again they cancelled it in the BBC but the Americans loved it so much they tried to keep it on the air
Love Nicholas Smith - his pompous yet bewildered Mr Rumbould was always great. Plus his part as the vicar in Curse of The Were-rabbit
Several years ago Mr. Smith came to my town, in Ohio, to perform and I regret not going to see him.
even tho we never met them...still they became like good friends and we miss them. : (
And they all were pleasant, every one of them!
Fun and informative interview! I always loved Mr. Rumbold (in addition to most of the other characters).
RIP Nick and Mary
I only knew him from Are You Being Served, but I'm sure he was also jolly good at the other things he did.
Just read today that Mr. Smith has died at the age of 81 ... the last of the old AYBS guard ...
+Marty Robinson When did he pass away. So sad...such a talent. Be well mate.
+NicBunnymen Dec 6th this year. So very sad.
May he live on up in the sky
I came across this video by accident. Love Are You Being Served. Such an interesting chat. A very talented man. Thanks for uploading.
Wow that interviewer is boring as hell! He reminds me of a job interviewer, not someone interviewing a celebrity! How in the world did he ever get that job?!
What a great actor. My wife and I loved him as Mr. Rumbold.
Only Mike Berry remains of the main cast.
Critics hated “Are You Being Served?” but the fans loved it.
Nice chap.Sounded very genuine.
RIP "Jug ears" and Thank you.
R.I.P Nicholas Smith
Mr. Smith was also in an episode of "Last of the Summer Wine."
A wonderful and very talented actor from a most beloved television series. God bless him.
Very good interview. Thanks for uploading. Such few interviews of the AYBS cast available.
R.I.P Nicholas Smith another legend in there field gone, you will be missed
it was hilarious to see him playing a Cockney character in Doctor in the House!!
Great insight into aybs. I also think the interviewer does a fair job - can't understand the criticism people are throwing at him. Further I think he is absolutely right in his assertion that aybs is a parody of the British class system.
Exactly! Well said!
You mean to tell me he was only an hour away and I didn't know it?!! Drat...I would've loved to meet him in person...that was my favorite show!
Who else remembers he times where young "Mr. Grace" would be sitting at Mr. Rumbold's desk thinking it was his own ? Miss that show
may he rest in peace thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Most informative and enjoyable.
This video puts me at peace for some reason.
Whilst I found the interviewer rather dull and as others have said, it was rather like a police interrogation, I did get to know a lot more about Nicolas than I previously had. Every interview he did must have been about AYBS. So, good and bad. But what is without doubt is what a lovely chap he is.
Loved the show. Use to watch it at 11pm on WFYI in Indianapolis. Often wondered how much the cast got along. Would have been cool to work in a store like that lol
A nice chap, and very talented, too!
Great stuff ! He seems like such a nice chap ! Thanks for sharing ! With those ears, Nicholas could have become a regular on "The Flying Nun"....he could have been "The Soaring Monsignor" ! :-)
The show was also a satire on dodgyness on diferent levels of Class and hierarchy within companies (whatever their business was), with Mr Rhumbold being a great example of a character who not only shows hypocracy, by trying to con the system, but also his underling workers, by using his position to con them.
"J. B. Priestley... I've heard the name, but can't quite place him...."
A very interesting person indeed. Thirteen string quartets!
It happenned to come to me...
Yeah when you were looking at your script!
Very interesting interview
Great actor and person
The interviewer is brilliant too! He just acts uninformed to make a good interview. LOVE Nicholas Smith. Love the whole cast!
Amazing to see Nicholas Smith. Just a shame I feel that the interviewer is just so bad, as is the setting. It looks more of a police interrogation than speaking with such an amazing talent. The interviewer himself has done no research on Nicholas Smith or the things he has done. So funny when Nicholas Smith asks do you know j. b. priestley? The reaction from the interviewer is just so silly.
Really wish a better interview would have happened, something to treaseure, moment do not unfortunately always come around again.
DisabledPrepper:
Totally agree with you.. Almost worse than useless. He didn't even know what the West End was! Typical American. I can say that because I'm one. American, that is, but no way I'm a typical Yank. One thing: I certainly won't be watching any further interviews by this interviewer, whatever his name is. NS, so talented, yet he never had the chance to extend his range on AYBS.
Agreed! It is a sore moment also as Nicholas Smith died a few days ago (Dec 2015)! :( So very sad!
Otravez 39 Typical American?
Useless interviewer, grr!
I agree with you for the most part
great upload, really wish the host had done his homework before the interview though.
Boy. he nailed Friends in a nutshell.
He is american, So you can not ask him to speak proper English. But he ask very good questions and that is the most important thing in an interview.
I come from the Netherlands and I speak some times with american/English people. From that experiences i know it isn't a issue when you don't speak the language very well. People are happy enough when you try to speak the language. My English isn't very good (the English grammar is very difficult for me) but people understand my difficulty.
What's proper English? Even the English don't know which is obvious just by listening to the butchery common all over the UK.
reunited in heaven or spirit his legend and the others will live on for generations
God bless u Sir Nicholas, better known as Mr. Rumbold
That was good watchin…
I so agree with that past comment these american presenters are so bad. The man sounds like he's talking about some sort of dull book. Come on I could have more entusiasm!
I agree. I have never heard or have seen this interviewer lol.
***** poor imitation of a news reader..
It's more like a police interrogation like someone else said
what a charming man.
Wasn't "Jug ears" in a Troughton-era Doctor Who episode?
2 episodes of the avengers 3 eps of dr who
He looks like he got his wardrobe from Grace brother's
really enjoyed this interview.
what a nice guy....always loved 'are you being served'
those decision makers at the bbc have a lot to answer for!!
they didn't realise the potential for this series as they were and still are so stuck up!
the fools also erased many of the uks best comedys.
unfortunately they are a very pc organisation.
They're not as PC as all that, if you see some of the BBC comedies over the past twenty years there's lots of blackface, jokes involving disabled people etc. Do you think Brian Potter would have got past a PC BBC?
*****
theres blackface on AYBS.. watch the roots episode..
@@farmbrough who is Brian Potter?
Absolutely brilliant series, though im 55 in 2021, i wonder why i dint know about this series earlier. Nevertheless, privilege to have seen it now. Very sad d cast is no longer here...RIP all and Sir Nicholas Smith...he was so cute and innocent and funny in AYBS
I think it’s fascinating that America has been in a time warp is far is 1970s UK comedy
Wasn't he also in a comedy "On the Buses" ?
+bagshitass I think he was and so was MR Granger.
And Are You Being Served?
Bingo :)
@do br BUZZZer :(
isnt Nicholas Smith the only one still alive now? or has he passed away too
I believe he's the last surviving of the main cast members of AYBS.
Since the very first episode
Mike Berry (Mr. Spooner) is also still with us. Didn't care for his character though.
@@omikronweapon Indeed ! Mike Berry is a talented actor but I too did not care for the "Mr Spooner" character either. He really got on my nerves.
Too American. Being Canadian, we are in the middle and see a big difference between the two. Ask like a Briton, might get a better interview.
no comparison between Are You Being Served and fucking Friends. apples and rotten oranges.
No offense to mr Rumbold but damn he need to trim some hairs on his left side. Bravo to the job you did in are you being serveved
Fancy an American with humour, trying to understand something as brilliant as Are You Being Served!
God interview it wasn't all about a.y.b.s .
1:02 population 8500?? 8.5 million if anything.
"Interesting People"..... I wish the interviewer was interesting......
Never liked Mr. Rumbold! But I think as a real person he's just great. The differences here between the English and American points-of-view are quite funny. But they manage to keep each other on track quite well. So sorry the majority of the cast of AYBS have passed on. But what fantastic shows they must be doing where they are!
I think people weren't supposed to like Mr Rumbold in the show
I absolutely adored old jug ears
Nicholas Smith comes across as an amazing and talented actor and quite a nice guy. The interviewer though, is horrible and doesn't seem to know what he's speaking of at many moments.
This interviewer is totally pompus and over analysing. Are you being served was a tremendous show with an amazingly brilliant cast. This interviewer doesn't seem to have even enjoyed the show. His loss
And im unanamous on that jug ears he did great bring rumbough
Nicholas Smith was such a good actor. But this host? Not so good.
Very interesting man. i always enjoyed his portrayal of Mr. Rumbold. I agree with some of the criticism of the host. I think he's a poor time manager. He has a 30 minute interview and he so poorly manages the time that he has to prefunctorily cut his guest off in the middle of the discussion. Too bad there's no time for do-over any longer. :(
When I lived in Carshalton we used the same train station and after I told him how I recorded all "Are You Being Served" because I loved the show....he was so rude....he just GOT UP from our bench, walked away....without a "thankx"...
+keri caye The interviewer twisted his words slightly. What Mr. Smith said/meant was, being an actor isn't what you would want your child to aspire to, probably because of the hardships.
Having an attitude towards someone just because they were discourteous is somewhat understandable, but denying his acting skills or criticizing his looks is quite petty.
keri caye It is of course your right to find him unattractive, I think he aged terribly, so I can't help agreeing with you there. That was not my point. You may BELIEVE you "only stated what you felt", but you and I both know you just edited your comment to remove the bit where you stated he was a terrible actor because he was rude to you. Those things don't follow each other logically. It's particularly ironic to me, as I wondered about how much people would like YOU while making such faulty reasoning, lo and behold you've also added that to your comment.
Again, people have every right to FEEL anything they want. It's when they start to make inferences from that were it gets petty to me.
+OmikronWeapon YOU DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT I SAID AND WHY.
I DO NOT LIKE HIM...BECAUSE AFTER I GAVE HIM A COMPLIMENT TO HIS FACE....HE WAS RUDE...HE COULD HAVE SAID, THANKS THEN WALKED AWAY.............INSTEAD, HE DIDNT LOOK AT ME, DIDNT SAY A WORD AND WALKED AWAY.....................do you understand?
and...I DON'T LIKE HIM AS AN ACTOR BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE HIM AS AN ACTOR.
SO BE IT....AND I'M AN ACTOR.
@@chocolatcats Really? Oh my. Anyway, thank you for sharing.
Is he still alive?Mr Humbolt I mean it
Rumbolt
Old Jug-ears..
How true ! When people asked him if he was listening, he could LITERALLY say, "I'm all ears" !! :-)
This is a complete farce of an interview. I’ve never seen a more poorly prepared interviewer than this man. What a waste of a brilliant actor’s mind and frankly, time. No clue about “Are You Being Served”, no clue about some of these playwrights in whose plays Nicholas Smith acted, nothing. Complete tabula rasa from the interviewer’s perspective. Isn’t that kind of where ample research is supposed to be the “summer reading” of this kind of interview ????? Even the character of “Rumbold” would be streaks ahead of this charlatan.
Well I don't know who that interviewer is, but he is extremely amateurish and dull. Nicholas Smith was very interesting to listen to, despite the poor interviewing!
A very enlightening interview, what an accomplished man, but oh, what a boring interviewer. How could this man ever be chosen for the position of an interviewer when compared to Michael Parkinson . This guy is enough to turn an interviewee off being interviewed.
Interviewer trying hard to be James Lipton.
The usual shot american interviewer!
the interviewer scares me
Love Nicholas and his work, but this interviewer is a complete ding dong!
Horrid interviewer.
*shit
The Interviewer is grossly under informed about everything!
