- A public television special with Frank Thornton, discussing his role as "Captain Peacock" in the British sitcom "Are You Being Served?".
This particular edition was broadcast as part of a pledge drive on AETN, the PBS affiliate network for Arkansas, but was produced by affiliate WLIW.
(Note: I would assume it's due to rights issues, but there are no actual clips from AYBS? in this program.)
Video quality varies because of VHS dub. I cleaned up the audio as best as I could, but this IS a nearly 25-year old VHS dub.

What a lovely man he was.I got to know him as a good friend when I worked with him on Last of the Summer Wine.
A nice interview, indeed. He was quite charming and very talented. In my opinion, he was the perfect choice for Captain Peacock in AYBS.
Are you being served is the only episodes i have seen with attentiveness without touching my phone to browse or check my messages.. awesome, simplicity at its best..
Captain Peacock is still to this day one of my favorite character on not only AYBS but on TV in general. Frank played him so well and his name is just iconic. Captain Peacock.
It was my favourite comedy.. seen that I was born in the early 70s. So I enjoy it ..May they all rest in peace.🖤🖤🖤🖤
Such amazing talent, sad they are all gone
Yes, Nicholas Smith (Mr. Rumpole) was the last of the originals.
My cousin got me into the show and it's turned into one of my favorite shows. Deeply saddened that they've all passed
Thanks for posting this, I didn't know this interview existed. This man as well as the entire cast of Are You Being Served has provided year after year of laughs. I bought the entire series on DVD years ago and have seen every episode countless times. Even my daughter at 13-14 years old, loved watching the episodes together. She's now 22 and a mother and still loves it. Good memories...
I've loved it since I was twelve myself (my mother told me about watching it when she was in Scotland) and watched every episode multiple times at that age.
Love Are You Being Served. Great show great actors! North Carolina, USA
Nice. Thank you from America. 💚💜👌🎬📺📽️
All such very talented and versatile actors. Thanks to BBC from 🇺🇸
Was not aware of this wonderful interview. It says something when a show, and its characters, are remembered and loved decades after the show has aired.
He was in a lot of British productions over the years, including Last of the Summer Wine.
True British comedy at its best ❤
1994 was the year of this interview
I always liked him as Truly of the yard one of the main characters in “Last of the summer wine”,
When this aired, I was just a Sophmore in High School and always watched AYBS at 10pm on PBS on weekdays. Peacock and Lucas were my favorite characters.
Frank Thornton sounds so sweet and handsome in this video. Thanks for posting!
This is a lovely little gem I don't think there are many interviews with the cast from AYBS
THANK you for uploading this. So many times I catch myself hoping, while watching, they would pick up AYBS again...again. But then I remember that they are All Gone now. So I have to be satisfied finding old interviews like this.
He was my favorite character
I was in the audience . WLIW21 sponsored the event. I wish they played the whole interview and the Q&A.
A true gent!
Absolutely delightful!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember watching this on WLIW 21
At the time I saw this special listed but always on a channel we didn't have. Thought I never would see it. We had John Inman twice and Mollie Sugden once visit our PBS here, and do interviews.
WLIW21 on Long Island arranged this interview as well as interviews with Mollie, John, and Wendy. Trevor was also invited but the interview was cancelled due to attendance issues.
@@charlespeterwatson9051that’s a shame. I’ve never seen an interview with Trevor
RIP Captain Peacock!❤❤🎉🎉😂😂
Yes, I am there, thank you so much for posting this! God I look terrible. LOL. Frank Thornton was so kind to me & my fiend.
Didn’t expect to hear his first acting job was in the Confraternity Hall in Thurles County Tipperary
I am from Thurles and the Hall is still there although it was extended and is called the Premier Hall 👍👍
Captain P always got the dolly birds. Remember miss bellfridge. She was like a centrefold model. Trouble is Mrs P always caught him and would attack him with an umbrella 😂
"Captain Freecock, are you pee?"
I wish footage of that existed!
Thanks for posting this but what a poor Quality of the picture and interview
Great comedic actor. One of the hardest things to do.
I grew up in the 1980s so VHS quality does not bother me. Still wish that hum was not present. Makes it unwatchable:😢😢
He talks about when they tried to make "The Brighton Belles" as a British version of "The Golden Girls" and how dreadful it was, and then how they tried to make "Are You Being Served?" American as "Beane's of Boston". The pilot is available on UA-cam (ua-cam.com/video/7rry-zw1buo/v-deo.html). I can't see "The Brighton Belles" as worse than it.
I love the Golden Girls, but not sure how the British version would have been. The American version of AYBS was absolutely dreadful. And the Australian version, which can also be seen on UA-cam, was basically pointless. The same script, besides a few names changed for the Australian audiences and a little more sexy with the women. It's only selling point was John Iman reprised his role. But again it was the same exact episodes with minor tweaks in slang.
Does anybody knows the name of the lady who does the interview?
Dara Welles. At the time she hosted a talk show for a New York PBS affiliate. She's apparently also been a news anchor at various points.
Thinks of you
Mike Berry who replaced, Trevor Bannister for the final 3 seasons, is the only 1 still with us,Trevor turned down the chance to be in, grace and favour,I was lucky enough to meet Nicholas smith, Mr rumbold, in 2008,at a doctor who event, he was in a 1964 story called, the dalek invasion of earth, iam not only a major fan of film and TV but a lifelong doctor who fan
I wonder why Trevor Bannister turned down AYBSA? He seems like his TV work bookings really slowed down up after leaving AYBS and he ended quite reliant on provincial theatre pantomime for employment in the 80s
I wonder what year this was done?
1995. The same year the same interviewer did an interview with Mollie Sugden.
Do you have the date of this? I think this was a luncheon and I was there....
1995 was the year
@@munimathbypeterfelton6251 Thank you
Who is the lovely bird?
Compared to most US kids I grew up a wider range of shows (blame WGBH 😼) from are you being served, keeping up appearances,The Benny Hill Show the original Who's line is it anyway, Monty Python , it was just funnier the dry more laid back approach ,then the American all in the family Sanford and son's I miss the simplicity, there was no hypersensitivity, unlike now ,the motives have changed
He's right. Beans of Boston was awful.
I love Are you being served? I still watch it now
This makes my heart happy
