Unfortunately in India we have a Status Driven or a Status show off culture. Especially in the metro and tier 2 cities. And this affects personal finances and also mental health which many may not even realise.
3 years back, While buying my hatchback it was very difficult for us not to choose a bigger suv shaped crossover with sunroof... And thank God, it was one of the best decision.. I get better fuel efficiency, much lesser EMI, shorter loan duration...and my Ford freestyle fulfills my everyday need..
I also bought Ford freestyle a month after Ford closed its sales in India. Titanium Petrol cost me on road 7.07 lacs, and it fulfils all my needs. Financial and car knowledge is necessary to make great decisions.

I moved to the US 10 years ago. Back then, most Indians had hatchbacks like Alto, i10 and Swift. If you had a sedan rather than a hatchback, you were considered rich. Now, when I see the cars my folks are driving back in India, it's amazing. There doesn't seem to be much hesitation to spend 20 lakhs for a car.
Indian youth are not fools, they do proper research and buy. Spending money isn't a problem at all even if they take it on loans as most of them take it due to cheaper interest rates and get a bigger benefit. Glad that I have Rolls Royce. I don't drive it normally but I use it as a show piece on the shelf. Like how it's die cast and small and compact. Zero maintenance and no fuel or service required, only dust is the problem but it's easier to clean it often.
In India cars are getting expensive because of compounding effect of high taxes. I bought Nexon in 2021 for 11 lakh and out of this 4 lakh was Taxes/RTO. When i checked on road price of an upper model which was 50k higher but on road price was 1.2 lakh higher due to increased taxes

My friends teased me when I purchased Bolero Neo, I wanted high sitting as I have back problem and a seven seater within budget. So I went with Bolero Neo and I have no regrets. It is very practical family car, unfortunately very underrated.
I can bet my last nickel that people questioing your choice must be korean fanboys. They're the most vocal and irritating group. I don't know what they think of themselves. You won't find a German British American Japanese or even Italian supercar owner roaming the net and dishing out advice on buying what he bought. But these korean fanboys? They're online 24/7 singing praises of their unsafe crappy cars.
One big issue is regulation..most companies provide all the safety features like 6airbags only in the top end variants...family users who care about safety are basically forced to go for top end variants!
And even then they don't work. My father was involved in accidents on his Hyundai creta twice. It was high end model with airbags. The airbags didn't open in both cases.
I saw this video after buying a car recently but I can easily relate to this as I had all these things in my mind. Instead of going for SUVs I opted for Grand i10 nios which is as per my budget and keeping my needs in mind. I am enjoying it thoroughly. Thanks for making this video.
Totally agree with last point. I bought used city 4th gen for 5.6lakhs 3 years back and still I have offers of 5.5-5.7 lakhs. But don’t want to sell this value for money gem ❤

You perfectly decoded the 'Consumer Mindset'. Gen-Z should understand difference between wants and needs. It's high time Wealth management should be taught in schools.

You never disappoint.❤❤ This was the very reason that we decided not to have car. We are in Delhi, paying Home loan EMI around 25k, out of my 85k salary, and my Avenger 220 cruise with 44-48 kmpl score, metro, ola are fulfilling the needs. These days even Volvo, Scania buses from Govt. Operators like UP roadways, Uttarakhnd roadways, HPSRTC, Rajasthan Roadways, Punjab roadways are exceptionally comfortable, superfast and on-time. Expressways and Highways are producing so much competition for Railways, and even Railways are launching trains like Vande Bharat...so overall, we are happy without car.

The mantra for Buying a Car should be - "The Cost of the Car that we Buy should not be more than 50% our annual Income".... For Eg - If Someone's Annual income is 12 Lacs, it shall spend Maximum 6 Lacs on its Car.... With this math, there will be no Financial Burden on the Buyer.... I personally follow this principle, my Annual Income is around 20 Lacs and my Car price is 9.7 Lacs ....

That is actually a valid reason. In India, especially the north, I found that many places that are not central locations have somewhat inferior roads compared to metropolitan locations. In such cases, taking a car with a high ground clearance even if it costs more than a regular car makes sense since it plays into the safety aspect of the passengers. Less vibration and shocks received by the passengers = no health complications such as spine problems or neck problems.
But that's a completely valid and practical reason to opt for big SUVs. Unlike the people mentioned in the video. And couple that with often bad roads.. so any smaller car wouldn't last as long.
Loan sirf isiliye lete hain ki car loan ka interest Mutual fund ke returns se bohot Kam hota hai. Isiliye nahi ki paise nahi hain. Also, tax payers kam hain par tax na Dene waale ameeron ki sankhya bohot zyada hai. Especially north Indian farmers, landowners with rental incomes, traditional moneylenders, and even many doctors and lawyers who collect most of their fees in cash.

My dad would have agreed to it as well but i Reconsidered it all. Ended up with a top end XUV500 in 19L and kept the remaining 6L in my account and it actually came out to be a wise decision. XUV fulfilled all my unplanned needs which Octavia wouldn't've till date.
Lot of wisdom packed in small video. Hats off to the team for similar great content on your channel. I went against the market trend of show-baazi and bought Tata Tigor petrol. Literally No one buys this car. But it has spot on handling, steering, great suspension. Cabin comfort is great. Big boot that satisfied my touring requirements. Engine is not spunky and is not that refined. But the car is 4* safety rated. It is also very compact so I feel no stress when driving through tight spots, city traffic etc. With BH registration it costed me just ₹8L. Which is much less than 3 times my annual earnings. I don't worry too much on mileage as I know I haven't spent crazy amount upfront anyways. And I only took 40% of cost as loan, that too to save some liquidity. I may look small, insignificant in front of other 95% financed hulking "SUVs". But I know I have made the most practical decision both requirement wise and money wise. In a way I am standing out in the crowd now and I like it 😅
I liked how you mentioned buying used car that's literally the best thing you should do if you want a car that you can't afford buying new . We did buy a used Q7 and am happy with it . Cause I can literally get 70% of my money back even after using it for 3 years straight.
Used car option is good for essential needs car but not luxury as you arent rich but want to look rich which is what this video was warning about. At that expensive price point you are in the .01% of the creamy layer Indians and spend big money only to drive a used car that someone else is throwing makes no sense but simply to supress the bug in our brains that was created by the marketing team of brand. You will still be riding in the speed limits and you will still face the traffic just like everyone else. After a certain price point the features are only gimmicks, the video was even making fun of features in car over 15 lakhs as they are of much use.
During Covid, most of the vehicles that were taken over by the banks were commercial Ola/Uber ones. That is my understanding based on having multiple discussions with Cab owners/drivers.
I bought my first car in 2017, a used 2011 etios petrol for 3L and happily drove it for 45000kms and recently sold it for 1.5L to Car24. Now bought a used 2022 Innova Crysta 2.7 GX AT for 18L. Plan to keep it for next 10 years and I am sure it will sell for 10L+
I think the most logical reason for buying an SUV in India would be due to rain. The sewers are most of the time blocked by garbage which causes waterlogging during the rainy season, which is a problem for sedans etc. but not for SUV's.
i think another reason for increase in the sale of SUV's is Indian market's shift towards better safety, which we have observed in all of Tata's models, which shows a sign of maturity and understanding of practicality of an Indian Consumer. Spending 8 -10 Lakhs on a Car like Punch or Nexon (which is a crossover of a hatchback and SUV but essentially has that SUV feel ) instead of Swift or Baleno or Brezza which offers shit build quality but high mileage, seems much more practical or better for an Indian Consumer. THere is more nuance in purchasing decision than just 'show off'. Also Financing a used car is shitty process and has a very high interest rate.

One thing probably you missed on why people buy SUVs is the condition of Indian Roads in general. SUVs offer significantly better ride quality and higher ground clearance to tackle these roads. Earlier being able to afford an SUV was even more challenging as there were no 'compact' SUVs or low budget ones. This I think is a valid enough reason.
One perspective I like to add is, see car is a big one time purchase and will improve social status as well as specs. Lets say you buy a car with low spec - you will end up thinking to buy a better car in next 5-8 years. Rather then that paying twice. Proper model car even if its a bit expensive need to be bought so you can keep it for next 15 years. Small car will always need an upgrade down the line. I do think Indians are making right decisions because we are known to be good with money. Atleast compared with others.
Impeccable research brother no doubt. Just one point you made about polo gt tsi it made me sad. That car has a niche following and not everyone in india has taste. Bhedchaal is very much prominent in our indian culture.
words of wisdom.. no shit, my father is prime example of buying car beyond his income abilities and because of which we have been in financial crises many times..
I always buy a second hand car. My first car was Renault kwid (used) bought for 2.5L and sold it for 2.20L after using it for 2.5 years. I currently own a ford aspire Tdci titanium which I bought for 4.9L. You can always go for used cars to have a better deal.
Wonderful video! SUVs have become a rage and our roads are filled with them. I took a Tata Tiago when others told me to for a Nexon or Ertiga. Didn't see the need to own a larger vehicle with a larger loan and interest. If the basic need is met, then no issues at all.
Good content. Remove sunroofs, wireless chargers, electrical seats, ambient lighting.. etc.. and put in a better engine, double paned windows, blindside monitoring, front sensors etc..
Yes, you are absolutely right. Sadly, today, so many people are living EMI-led lives, which means most of their income goes into paying EMIs, and they don't want to buy small cars or low-budget cars because these are laughed at by society for their looks and size. So, I don't expect people to learn anything from your video. For me, I had Maruti Alto Vx for nearly 16.6 years and it cost me 2.80 lakh back in 2007. After driving it for 2 lac kilometers, I managed to get INR 90,000 from Maruti True Value while CARS24 offered me a meager INR 38,000! The only reason I sold my Alto was because I wanted to buy an automatic car with power steering to save me from driving fatigue. I strongly believe that your monthly EMI should not be more than 10-12% of your monthly income. There will be monthly fuel and maintenance expenses too, which will further add to the ownership cost of your new car. So, I wanted to be in my financial limit irrespective of what stupid society will think of me or my car. Now, I earn approx. 60 per month and could have easily bought a low-end Thar, but I don't want my hard-earned money to go up in the air every month in the form of hefty EMIs. So, I chose the new Maruti Spresso Automatic Vxi plus (0), which cost me INR 6,95,000 on-road plus accessories worth INR 60,000. I paid 2,50,000 in cash, exchanged my Alto for 90000, and got an additional discount of 40,000. I availed the car loan of INR 3,15,000 for 7 years from SBI and my monthly EMI is INR 5000, which is pretty much affordable and does not pinch my pocket in any way. And yes, Spresso offers amazing value for money. Be it ground clearance, inner space, features (ABS, EBD, HillHold, Automatic On/Off, Touchscreen infotainment, Steering mounted controls), engine performance, and the peace of mind of owning a Maruti product.

That's the reason people buy Big cars... even if the budgets are out of BUDGET 💸💰💸
Salute from the mountains ⛰️ of Arunachal Pradesh.
Keep all the great content coming 🤍
That is actually a valid reason. In India, especially the north, I found that many places that are not central locations have somewhat inferior roads compared to metropolitan locations. In such cases, taking a car with a high ground clearance even if it costs more than a regular car makes sense since it plays into the safety aspect of the passengers. Less vibration and shocks received by the passengers = no health complications such as spine problems or neck problems.
But that's a completely valid and practical reason to opt for big SUVs. Unlike the people mentioned in the video. And couple that with often bad roads.. so any smaller car wouldn't last as long.
Second hand option is good. You just need to do your thorough checks. Its a bit difficult but pays in dividends.
Well if this trend continues further for few years it's better to buy shares of bajaj finance ,M&M & Tata motors

It is also very compact so I feel no stress when driving through tight spots, city traffic etc. With BH registration it costed me just ₹8L. Which is much less than 3 times my annual earnings.

Everyone now a days are going for emis , chahe agle mahine paise ho yah nh ho .. lakin eik iPhone chahiye hi chahiye emi pr .. similarly for cars same mentality .. we are so dommed up.
Still love my Ford Figo top model. 9 years later, still going strong. Alas, due to Delhi 10 year limit for diesel vehicle, have to give it away. Otherwise it’s engine and body is still as good as the first year.
Kitbe me doge bhai?
Same bhai same … just because of diesel , had to sell it .. from engine to body everything was perfect in ford figo
Bhai mere paas chamakti Hui wagonR hai 17 saal ho gaye abhi bhi mast chalti hai koi dikkat hi nahi hai gaadi me.
Bas ab Delhi Noida me chala nahi sakta ek to 15year rule ki wajah se dusra society ke pressure ki wajah se
Yes road play important role in buying decisions of car. Sedan and hatchback perform miserable on poor Indian roads
Exactly
Chup bdsk suv lene ke lie indian road to badnaam kAro
Hahahaha suv ride quality is better in terms of Sedan 😂😂😂😂😂😂 dont speak this infront of car enthusiast friend he migh end up slapping you hard 😂😂
@@ishanbarai4334 he might meant to say less chance of getting under body scraped while dealing poor roads.
My first preference is for new car but if used car is in better condition so there is no loss
Most of us know these basics but such videos revise these basic concepts once more.
Thankyou
One perspective I like to add is, see car is a big one time purchase and will improve social status as well as specs. Lets say you buy a car with low spec - you will end up thinking to buy a better car in next 5-8 years. Rather then that paying twice. Proper model car even if its a bit expensive need to be bought so you can keep it for next 15 years. Small car will always need an upgrade down the line.
I do think Indians are making right decisions because we are known to be good with money. Atleast compared with others.
that is if they buy high efficiency and quality engine. No one replace a car less than ten years.
This is called 'Quality Content', always to the point!
Impeccable research brother no doubt. Just one point you made about polo gt tsi it made me sad. That car has a niche following and not everyone in india has taste. Bhedchaal is very much prominent in our indian culture.
Rocking with 3rd gen honda city 🙂
It is as good as new
There are a hell lot of non Income tax payers in india who are crorepati..
words of wisdom.. no shit, my father is prime example of buying car beyond his income abilities and because of which we have been in financial crises many times..
these showoff trends will ruin youth
Who support biturbo media ❤️🇮🇳💪🏻💀😎
I always buy a second hand car. My first car was Renault kwid (used) bought for 2.5L and sold it for 2.20L after using it for 2.5 years. I currently own a ford aspire Tdci titanium which I bought for 4.9L. You can always go for used cars to have a better deal.
Nowadays used cars are very expensive
@@fouseytube8163reason is they are selling 5 years used car at new cars price with some 1/2 lakh discount 😂🤣🤣🤣
Exactly and extremely needed information you gave brother ❤ keep it up 🎉
Subscribed for the sensibility that you are promoting ❤
Very well done man, I agree with all the points you mentioned…Keep creating such videos ❤
Wonderful video! SUVs have become a rage and our roads are filled with them. I took a Tata Tiago when others told me to for a Nexon or Ertiga. Didn't see the need to own a larger vehicle with a larger loan and interest. If the basic need is met, then no issues at all.
You are giving a true suggestion, logo ke behkawe se bachna bht jaruri hota h 😅
Mujhe kya mere pass to tractor h. No car driver is above me 😂
Thanks Buddy at least you pointed out this
For instance I am earning More than a Cr in an annum but I used to drive a Laura TDI and bought it at 3.25 lacs 3 years ago
But it’s fun to drive man
And I have kept my car thoroughly inspected and checked by Company 😊
Hard to believe your income bro!

Car gives the sense of achievement in young age. When i was an entry level professional, i used plastic chairs for dining table, but expensive leather seats inside my car !! Now i am not ready to spend 10% of my salary on transportation. It is same across the world, Gently driven high end off road SUVs and sports cars are one of the favourite status symbol for economically successful women in places like US.
Yes he forgot to mention that SUV craze is also present in the richest country of the world USA and there too 80% of the vehicles are financed.
Very true facts. Thanks for sharing. It is also my point of view. People nowadays are crazy for Status symbol. Personally, I prefer Hyundai i10 grand NIOS
Thar is the most uncomfortable family car that one can buy. It is meant for off roading enthusiasts. I feel sad for people who are buying it as their first car just for show off.
