Davinci Resolve Crashing? Fix For AMD Driver Update

- Heres a fix for davinci resolve if you are having issues due to the new AMD graphics card driver update. You need to rollback your driver to a more stable one and it should clear it up just fine.

I've tried uninstalling both my AMD Drivers and Davinci Resolve, the issue is still persisting.. I've tried the latest adrenaline version, 23.2.1, and the issue still persists. Any suggestions?
Update: I found out it was because of a USB adapter that was plugged in to my PC. It was a USB C Hub with dual HDMI ports. When I unplugged it, Davinci works on 18.5 b2 and latest amd driver

@@itsPlooshie Thank god for this comment, spent weeks looking at BMD forms and other stuff about drivers and versions for it to be something that isn't even connected to anything to be my issue.

@@FinishTheRaceVL7 Hey! I’m glad that you commented, now I can update you guys on my new findings!! If you are facing this issue and you have a USB C Hub + Hdmi, you can actually continue to use your usb c hub and davinci by doing the following:
1. Plug in your USB C Hub
2. Navigate to “Device Manager”
Underneath “Display Adapters”, if you expand that category, you might see an additional display driver there that’s not your onboard graphics/discreet graphics..
3. Right Click the display adapter in question, and “disable device”
As you can imagine, you can now use your USB C Hub AND DaVinci, but you lose the functionality of those HDMI ports on the hub..
Overall I think the bug is with DaVinci’s ability to detect which display adapter to use for media playback when multiple display adapters are detected.
P.S. if you disable the wrong display adapter, and you black screen yourself, CTRL + WIN + SHIFT + B should bring you back to life.

@@sl3ndermmo Just for info, it seems that the 18.5 beta version of Davinci solved the problem. I just tried it for a few minutes, looks like it works even with the latest Radeon drivers.

I was having this exact same problem with a 6700XT also. So I know exactly what you mean by "it was really pissing me off." It's like the interface would just stop refreshing. Controls were still working, audio could be heard, but the interface and visuals would just freeze completely. Ironically, while actually doing a render it would work fine the entire time, but just when doing editing it would constantly freeze.
In 2024 the crash still and sadly Davinci Resolve lost a fan since yesterday, yesterday I found and started to learn Adobe Premiere and I liked

I was having an issue with my old msi r5830 twin frozr ii that I put back in since I was having monitor issues (bought a new monitor). I fixed this issue with Resolve by putting back in my Nvidia GT1030 card. BAMM! No more crashes!

Also if your having this problem and don’t want to downgrade you can upgrade to the public beta of davince resolve 18.5 , just did it and it’s back to working again

I have the same problem, and i just discovered that the problem is that when davinci starts playing ANY video in the viewer it starts eating up ALL THE RAM and eventually the ram fills up and crash the program.
In reddit i read that also using davinci 18.5 solves the problem.

thanks for this I was going crazy for awhile now thinking I had to switch back to hitfilm.
like one day davinci worked fine and then the next day it just didnt, same exact issue as you prettymuch accept instead of just freezing every button in the window would turn black when hovering the mouse over them and then alot of weird artifact like glitches would appear like random static and different colored bars. never occured to me that my gfx card was causing the issue.

Your PC is doing better than mine... Im on a 7800X3D + 7900XTX and i got 25fps playback+ it actually stopped working on all projects as soon as i got 3 clips in it -.-
I love resolve, and it worked just fine on my old 1660ti ...so in that case don't blame it on davinci resolve... it seems to be on amd :( kind of sad looking at my setup
I think you are right. Don't get me wrong man, I love my DaVinci, it's leaps and bounds better than premiere.
@@sl3ndermmo UPDATE: It was a driver related problem with AV1 Codec. It was working before, then they patched it, and now its broken again.(might work allready, just switched to h265 footage) AV1 export works fine ;)
Amd needs you to uninstall the Catalyst software and in case you are installing it, chose "just the driver" option rather than the full package
At this point is also think Davinci isn't stable enough on Windows, Davinci still crashes even with nVidia GPUs, Am now running a Hackintosh and i never experienced any crashes not even once, but when i boot on windows, Davinci would crash from time to time.

Driver update fixed my issue in Blender and caused an another one in Resolve. Love Windows. Maybe I should own a separate machine for every app.

Great video, good presentation--not fast paced and zippy like a buzillion other YTers. However, this did not fix my DR staggering issue. Running DR Studio 18.1.4, have a AMD 5900x, with cooler, RX 580 (which DR techs say is still ok). I originally had crashes and DR tech said to roll back AMD driver. That fixed the crashing but did not fix the staggering nor the slow (stuttered) action on my Speed Editor Jog Wheel. All was fine and buttery until the (unnoticed) AMD driver update about six weeks ago. Oddly enough, the Jog Wheel runs pretty smoothly in the Color and Deliver pages, but not in Edit, which it used to. I'm at whits end, so if you have any suggestions.... Thanks!
I would keep trying different drivers for now until they either update DaVinci to fix the issue or the gpu drivers to fix it

Yep, I un-installed windows 11. I'm back to windows 10. Microsoft devs suck.
I switched to DaVinci resolve for the same reason and I love it. A lot smoother and less issues and it uses my amd GPU, unlike PPro crap. Adobe writers just suck and don't care.
I use Acronis to do image backups periodically and if I want to attempt something stupid like install windows 11, I'll image my drive before hand and if I don't like it, I can just reinstall the backup image and it's like nothing ever happened. I love Acronis

Hmm, I haven't had that issue, just the slow editing then a crash with no error message. I would start with updating the gpu drivers

ooh good question. I dont even know what kind of video cards mac's use. Im not sure, but if they use amd graphics cards, then yes id say it should still apply.
