      Agree. It's quite simple :
      Did Trump jailed/killed/disappeared anyone that spoke against him?
      Yes : He is authoritarian
      No : He is not authoritarian

      @@ChristDuque that's not what authoritarianism means

    • @ChristDuque
      @ChristDuque 5 років тому +5

      @@MegaMapper What is the definition of authoritarianism then?
      I can take the one from Wikipedia, from the webster dictionary, oxford dictionary.. None of them seems to apply to Trump.
      That word is as over used as "nazi" nowadays. They are used to make people look bad.
      I'm from Spain, until 1979, we had a real authoritarian dictator, who jailed and killed dozens of thousands of people. Trump doesn't do 0.1% of what a real authoritarian "leader" can do. Trying to assimilate Trump and the word authoritarian is just as bad as wanting to say that everyone on the right is a nazi.
      PS : And i'm saying that being a Libertarian.

    • @MegaMapper
      @MegaMapper 5 років тому +22

      @@ChristDuque I'm not saying that Trump is or isn't authoritarian i'm just saying that your previous example isn't authoritarianism for 2 reasons: 1.authoritarianism is more than that. 2.it's out of context.
      If you want to know my opinion: Trump isn't authoritarian in my opinion, he have some tendencies for that for obvious reason - he is businessman but it's not enough to claim such a statement and in my opinion people who call nazis or authoritarians everybody who have different opinion are fanatics and morons.
      I'm not even subscriber of this closed-minded channel, it's first and last video i've watched here, i was looking for Destiny 2 guide (video game) and this was recommended to me, lol.
      Also about your last sentence: "And i'm saying that being a Libertarian."
      I don't want to be your enemy or something but i hate this kind of statements because it's like it suppose to mean something "i'm black so for cases with black people my opinion is a fact", "i'm libertarian so my opinion about the opposite side is a fact" etc. etc.

    • @ChristDuque
      @ChristDuque 5 років тому +1

      @@MegaMapper Well that's fair enough for the first part. I'm not subscriber here and ended here like you watching another video.
      But I respectfully disagree with your last part. Being black has nothing to do with ideas, you can be black (or any other race for that matter) and be on the left, on the right, or elsewhere, it's not political in itself.
      Libertarians put freedom/liberty of the individual above all, it's a political statement. You will see me denouncing against real threats or ideas (mostly on the left, socialism, communism, or also real authoritarians on the right, but almost inexistant nowadays) .. So in this case, yes it means something. It's like someone giving you legal counsel.. and he says : and i'm saying that as a lawyer. It doesn't mean it's necessarily true, or that the person (me included) cannot be wrong, but it gave you a sense of where the idea come from.
      Anyways, I think we both agree on this, it's just that written text in youtube comments is not the best format to pass ideas trough sometimes. ahah

      @@Vorock16 you're just being obtuse at this point.
      You cant just revoke press passes because you feel like the media is being mean to you, then bitch about the harsh criticism actions like that will inevitably bring on. If Obama revoked Fox News' press pass for being downright disrespectful to him, which they were ALL THE TIME, the conservatives would be crying holy hell. Fuck, Fox News BACKED CNN on the press pass issue precisely because of the precedent it would set if a Democratic president took power in the future.
      As for authoritarian actions outside of his repeated attacks on the press, just look at his actions regarding the Justice Department.
      He literally fired the director of the FBI because he refused to pledge loyalty to him regarding the Russia investigation.
      He went on and on about Jeff Sessions recusing himself from the investigation, as if the Justice Department exists to protect the president and is not an independent executive department.
      He's repeatedly threatened to fire Rob Rosenstein, who oversees the special prosecutor. He actually fired Jeff Sessions when politically convenient, then disregarded the line of succession to install a political stooge and possible con artist who will do what he commands, something that a shitload of legal scholars are calling downright unconstitutional.
      Just today it was revealed he wanted to ORDER the Justice Department to prosecute his political rivals. He's such an authoritarian, he doesn't seem to understand the concept of conflict of interest or how doing shit like that could trigger immediate impeachment proceedings, and it clearly bothers him greatly that he can't just impose his will on everything.
      Those are just some examples of his authoritarian nature.

    "In order to sue you have to prove-"
    No, you can sue anyone for anyone reason. Once it's in a courtroom, then you have to prove certain things - but until then, or until a judge throws a case out pre-trial, people have to pay for lawyers and go through the process of filling and responding and whatever. There can be a massive financial burden placed on somebody who's being sued that they have to deal with even if the case never makes it to court. Wealthy corporations will fairly routinely sue private citizens with claims that they KNOW are spurious, because they also know that the private citizen cannot afford to stand up to the expensive corporate lawyer and would rather agree out of court to stop doing whatever the wealthy wants them to stop doing than accept total financial ruin.
    If Trump gets to expand libel laws to make more lawsuits possible, the chilling effect isn't just people being afraid of lawsuits - it will include people being hit with frivolous lawsuits that they're unable to defend themselves against, and small voices being crushed and permanently silenced because they had to bankrupt themselves to resist claims made just to ruin them. Especially if a sitting president can sue the press - and "the press" can include independent journalists who have to take on the financial burden entirely on their own - you're opening the door for an individual to leverage the financial might of the federal government against dissenting voices, and that's a fight the government is going to win much more often than it should.

    "the press doesn't have to know at the time of publishing that what they're saying it's false it just has to come out that it's false later."
    So if he suggests something similar that achieves the same goal but not word for word...according to this guy...it still isn't authoritarian.
    He just said lets take a look at libel laws...it could mean anything....has an eerily same feel as if someone punches you, and you say I'm gonna kill him..what the debater is saying is that it wasn't for the punch that he said he was gonna kill him....it was just an expression...and that you shouldn't be jailed for that threat because you haven't done anything yet...like you haven't acted on it...

    Love what you do, I meet with these people all the time and I can never come up with what to respond with at that moment (always think of the perfect comeback right after) and it seems like it did nothing but reinforce their own views. Watching your debates with these people (even though you question why the fuck you do it or waste your time with them) it helps people like myself who have trouble getting the point across to others that we may actually have an influence on. That and I really think you can influence casual viewers of other streamers that don't really have an opinion and just go with what their influencers (streamers/online personalities) say. But, I digress, I think you are doing a great job and are in the position to do a positive thing in the world, regardless of how small you may perceive it.

    "Authoritarianism is a term political scientists use for a worldview that values orderliness and authority, and distrusts outsiders and social change. As a form of government, it is characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms. Individual economic or personal freedoms are subordinate to the state and there is no constitutional accountability under an authoritarian regime."
    "Authoritarian personality is a state of mind or attitude characterized by belief in absolute obedience or submission to someone else’s authority, as well as the administration of that belief through the oppression of one's subordinates. It usually applies to individuals who are known or viewed as having an authoritarian, strict, or oppressive personality towards subordinates."

    Trump is not pushing for expansion of libel law; he is pushing for expansion of the sedition acts (and the Espionage Act), but opening up the libel laws is easier for the public to handle. Sedition was considered too authoritarian and therefore repealed in 1920.

    He has one example which, assuming his memory is right, was retracted without assistance from the law. He admits it's not enough on its own and doesn't know other examples. All he knows is that with the exception of that one time, which we haven't been able to confirm ever happened, Trump only ever speaks of expanding libel laws when faced with criticisms.
    I think this guy needs his positions summarized to him like that rather than as he didn't provide an example. If I'm assuming good faith here rather than intellectual dishonesty, this guy doesn't have a strong overview of his own beliefs.
