  • TimeSplitters 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Free Radical Design and published by Eidos Interactive. It was released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox game consoles in October 2002 in North America, Europe and Japan. It is the second game in the TimeSplitters series, and a sequel to the original TimeSplitters.
    The game features a single-player mode consisting of ten levels in which the player assumes the role of one of two space marines as they attempt to stop the alien race of TimeSplitters from ruining history by collecting the time crystals in various time periods, ranging from the Wild West to the 25th century. It has several multiplayer modes.
    A sequel, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, was released in 2005, developed by Free Radical and published by EA Games. In June 2007, another sequel was announced to be in development, titled TimeSplitters 4.

      Not exactly fair, Call of Duty even with the expansions and loot crates provide more content bang for your buck out of the box than most AAA games in general: single-player campaign, co-op, multiplayer, and wave defense in the form of Nazi Zombies, with plenty of customizations to unlock. Its the matter of the content itself feeling derivative and uncreative that makes it a waste of development most of the time.

    THQ *MUST* release an HD Remastered Trilogy of this series. While one TS game can provide many hours of content, having all three will TRIPLE those hours. The days of couch multiplayer will truly return. And most importantly: If this is marketed right, this could teach a lesson to the modern gaming industry that there were days when games were jam-packed full of content with zero DLC and ESPECIALLY zero microtransactions.
    I can easily picture a selling point/slogan for the Remastered Trilogy that takes the piss out of the modern gaming industry with something like "Remember when games had so much content and charm? No DLC, no Microtransactions, everything is yours right out of the package."
    Seriously, the gaming industry is in dire need of a hard slap in the face and remastering this Trilogy will provide that very slap. Games so full of content that *CAME* with the game itself and not locked behind a paywall. That is mind-blowing to modern gamers and they'll want to get all in on that.

    The TimeSplitters games were not only incredibly fun but they were technically superb. They looked amazing and the performance was silky smooth. I went back and played the series a few years ago and was seriously impressed by how well they hold up. My one gripe is the manual aiming system in the first two games, however at that time the control schemes for console games were much less standardised than they are today.
    If I remember correctly, when I initially played the first TimeSplitters I wasn't even using the now standard control scheme (Left stick: Move. Right stick: Look). I believe I was still using something similar to the controls in GoldenEye/Perfect Dark because that's what I was accustomed to (Something like left stick: Move forward/back and look left/right. Right stick: Strafe and look up/down).
    I remember the first time the now standard method clicked with me. It was a complete revelation. I became 10 times better at FPS games pretty much instantly. I remember thinking "Why has it taken me so long to discover this and why doesn't every game use/allow this layout?". It's kind of interesting looking back at control schemes of PS1/PS2 games because they were so different from game to game and learning the controls was a bigger part of the learning curve of each game back then. It does make it a challenge going back to some games though.

    • @neil1jnr
      @neil1jnr 5 років тому

      I remember the controls too. I got my PS2, Xmas day 2000. Bought Timesplitters on boxing day, went home and was gutted aboutthe controls, made no sense. Tried changing them on settings etc. After a while the set up just clicked amd i got it. Prior to that my only experience with FPS and analogues was Goldeneye 64.

    I'm pretty sure some of the missions give you more than one checkpoint. I liked how the system worked. It made the missions really tense. You complain about difficulty in games quite a lot. Some games are just supposed to be difficult. There's nothing wrong with it if it's by design. I do agree that the first level of the campaign is the best though. It's one of the best game levels ever.

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  10 років тому +1

      Okay, so some games are supposed to be difficult, but should that not be something worth mentioning in the review?

    • @gilgamesh310
      @gilgamesh310 10 років тому +4

      Yes, but it's not always a negative. At least not when the design is intentional. Timesplitters 3 featured much more checkpoints, but I think the game suffered a bit for it. It was too easy. Anyway, I agree with most of what you said. It's a good review.

    Solid review. I'm glad you addressed how frustratingly difficult some of the challenges are. Yeah, the level quality is inconsistent, but the only stage I really didn't enjoy was the one set on the alien planet.
    To me, the biggest obstacle to enjoying this game was getting accustomed to its strange aiming system. Aiming is VERY different depending on which weapon you're wielding, and makes it difficult to play well until you train yourself adjust to the system (which is completely different from every PC-based FPS I've ever played). TimeSplitters (3): Future Perfect adopted a more conventional aiming system and is thus easier to enjoy the first time you start playing it. TS:FP also features better graphics, online play, and a better (and funnier) plot, so I enjoy it more than TS2.

    Although the original Deus Ex and Blade Runner (the Westwood's movie-based action adventure video game Blade Runner) come very close, the first part of the Blade Runner-esque level in this game is the most Blade Runner thing ever seen in a video game. You feel like a Blade Runner agent while you follow that guy as the awesome ambiental Vangelis-like music plays and wonderful rain and neon effects add to the overall immersive feeling. Any BR fans out there owe it to themselves to experience this level of TimeSplitters 2 for themselves. It's a very memorable experience. Too bad the rest of the level is mindless action, but what you gonna do...
    The Old West level would've nailed the Eastwood and Leone's Spaghetti Western look IF it had the gameplay of Lucas Arts' Outlaws. The Ennio Morricone-style music is there, the old western-y looks are there, the atmosphere is there, but the level's goals and gameplay just don't match the excellent presentation.
    Anyway, if the whole game had levels like these two standouts, beautiful tributes to excellent movies and other pop culture stuff, I'd love this game. However, at least half of the levels in Time Splitters 2 fall flat and become a drag.
    Still better than Time Splitters 1 levels, though.
    Oh, and that introductory level in Siberia (or wherever) has an excellent James Bond GoldenEye (the Nintendo game) feel to it.
    Great review, btw.

    Oh hell yeah. I got into Timesplitters first as a former friend had borrowed this Xbox ( _ye olde one_ ) and brought it with him so we sat down and played through Future Perfect ( _which was the game that was on it_ ). Years, many years later ( _over 15 years_ ), namely like this year my currently rl friend tells me to download Timesplitters 2 so we could emulate and play it, and yeah. This game has aged like very very fine cheese or wine or, whatever that ages beautifully. Hilariously he played with a controller and I played using my arcade stick which gimped me in certain areas and yet I still managed to top the score and win on half the maps we played on.
    Hands down my favorite is Gretel Mk. II ( _because I love Robots_ ) and dual sawed-off-shotguns. Makes me feel like I snagged them from the Blood universe.
    Fantastic, amazing reliable weapon. And I agree. the Sci-fi weapons mostly feel terribly underpowered.

    Great review, Gggmanlives. :)

    Surely one of the best game sequels and shooters of that era. It totally overshadows the first game and feels like what Timesplitters should have been like from the first time.

    you rant about enemies having too much health, while showing a serie of 3 arcade league matches where the point is actually to fight a single enemy with a shitload of health.

    Played this on a friend's original Xbox last year. Other than getting used to that particular controller, the game itself was still awesome! I still wish we'd get another Timesplitters game! XD

    The game is awesome, but I agree with your complaint on unlocks/arcade mode. I ended up using a cheat code disc to unlock everything and saved it to that file for whenever I just wanted to enjoy the full bot mode. I kept open a legit profile to, but still for a game with unlocks this insane I don't regret using a work around for when I just want some fun.

    Nice review and game, the graphics looks quite good actually for a game of its age, do you capture the footage from a emulator or from the actual console? If I remember it right, last time I tried to play it with a PS2 (with a component cable) in a HD TV, the game looks dull and full of jaggies.

    It's hard to beat great old games. I knew Borderlands was awesome but I started with Borderlands 2 and had a blast playing through it all the way through days and late nights. Coming back I got more hooked than anything in the past years. It has so much and the world changes and expands with the story so much plus the unique art style and creativity that makes it so lively that anything realistic feels like grey cardboard. Boring boring boring boring unoriginal boring and dull. Borderlands 2 really skyrocketed my expectations for games like F.E.A.R did with it's mind blowing ai and amazing shooting.
    Same with Blood as I downloaded the Deathwish mod which blew me away, it's maps are just as good if not better than the original game. Or rather it has it's own charm but is extremely impressive compared to the original levels. It's impossible to find something as satisfying maybe Shadow Warrior 2 might be good but it lacks variety in it's own formula with too much gore and gory red flesh unlike Painkiller which went from military bases of soldiers to haunted insane asylums with horrific monsters and much more

      Borderlands isn’t even that old. It’s PS3 gen, unlike this older PS2 game. The Borderlands franchise isn’t hard either.

    I still greatly prefer this to Future Perfect. I love the changes that harder difficulties bring. I also actually enjoyed the more free-form style of storytelling in TS2 compared to the third game, and I disliked how the third game suddenly dropped the Quantum Leap-esque body inhabiting aspect of time travel, which felt like one of the more unique things about its predecessors.

    _But TimeSplitters Future perfect came out on PS3_
    *There never was one.*
    Kind of what lead to me having a bug up my ass about PS3 for a while.

    I wish this footage was in 60fps not in 30 cause the game maintains 60 fps lock like all the time on all consoles even with two player coop/deathmatch with bots(never had the chance to check it out with more than two players but I assume its still runs really well) I implore you to check out other footage (or possibly the game itself) cause its real charm to look at with all of its wacky animations.
