Totally agree and have always believed this to be true at 8:36! I get so annoyed when people do a comparison video of two or more cameras with only a close up shot; close up shots always look good in terms of sharpness (assuming the subject is in focus).

I'd say it depends on who is uploading. For me personally, if its someone I've been watching for a while I'll tend to be more curious in what they post and will hold my attention for things like that, but if its a video I just stumbled upon for a tutorial, I'm usually looking for the straight facts etc. I love watching your videos but also really appreciate the index you post in the description in case I'm in a hurry for an answer to something. Thanks for the great content!

This is the best video to teach people that make videos with a lot of motion how to use their camera. "Brandon Li" really explains everything extremely well. Every person that posts on YT or makes videos for sale should watch his videos BEFORE they even take the camera out of the box. Camera shake, lots of unnecessary movment, chopped up editing in post production, can all be remedied by someone that really understands how to use the incredible equipment available these days. I'm a graphic designer without a background in photography and no exposure to videography. I just got an action camera to finally capture all of the long distance endurance events I do. So I'm poking around in UA-cam to learn about the basics of video recording. This is one of the most informative educational videos I've ever seen on here. Brandon, it sounds like you know exactly how you will use each shot on the timeline when you go to shoot it. I suppose you'd need to know whether to shoot something in 24p, 30p, 90p-180p etc, depending on how you are going to use it. Doesn't this make it very difficult to improvise? Often, when I capture images during travel, for example, I haven't pre-determined when and how I will use that clip is there like a "safe" frame rate that you use?
Knowing what kind of music you want to use in your clips will help you with your improvisation. Learn how to time re-map. It's really a lot easier than people envision. Take his examples of when to use slow motion - i.e children playing in water, birds flying, traffic moving at an intersection and use time remapping with sound effects to capture the audience attention
Hi, as a person who trying to make good travel videos, I think that’s the reality for most of us. Including my self. We’re just trying to catch many footage as possible without any pre planning during the travel and trying to figure out the edit in the end. But there are many times, once you sat down to edit, all I can think of is, so many other ways I could have taken this shot, should have used a different frame rate, too short, can’t slow this down now, not long enough this and that Gerrrr. I think little pre planning could go long way and what makes it to the next level. This might not answer your question but at least I know what should I do next Cheers
For me, I find that planning in advance if I could really helped a lot and saved time during post. What type of shots I want and how I would make use of them in post. I felt it worked for me as I have a rough idea of the frame rates to use. Another factor that came up while filming is actually the amount of light that I have. If I am in an area without much ambient light and I do not have artificial lighting with me, I would go for a lower frame rate just so I can bump my shutter speed down to get more light (with the fact that I have a DSLR that sucks at high ISOs). In post, I find that optical flow under time interpolation (premiere pro) works really well, if you ever need to stretch that 24fps. Hope my 2 cents helped!

Hi Brandon, you mentioned 3:25 that 30fps recording / 24fps project is not a even number and give stutter. But again 6:03 you said the 30fps conforming gives you the smoothness. I am a little bit confused. Does the (recording fps/project fps=even number) always need to be true for slow motion shooting? Thanks!

The 60p will not be as smooth as a 24p clip at its normal speed (in a 24p timeline). Its okay to include some 60p footage at its normal speed especially if you're wanting to use a speed ramp. It will never be AS smooth as the project frame rate at its original speed. But that DOESN'T mean your footage is useless if you don't always slow down your 30p, 60p, and 120p footage. In other words, if you want the most cinematic/smooth video, always keep your clips conformed to the projects frame rate. But if you have a couple small clips that you recorded in a higher frame rate but you don't want to slow it down, you will be alright... Hope this helps.@@JTCFilms
Just building on this because I was thinking the same, so if I record at 60fps and my project is 24fps, when I conform it the slo Mo won’t be stuttery but the 100% will be of course?
Hey great video, but you seem to target more TV playback than computer screens or mobile devices. The main issue with 24/25p these days is, that it doesn't align to the 60 Hz of the display which causes a bit stuttering, like exporting 24p material with 30 fps but only half as much, but still it's there and it's annoying. So if you plan to record stuff for youtube, plan ahead and use 30 fps or even 60 fps for export - that would be my additional advice. But your very good at your job, I must admit, neat shots. :)

So my question is: if you want to upload in 4k 24fps, but you have to record in 1080p 60fps to make slow motions. Does that mean that one part of the video will be in 4k 24fps while the slowmotion will be 1080p 24fps and the remaining part of the slow motion clip is 1080p 60fps? How do you make that the entire video is uploaded and shownin 4k 24fps?? I hope my question makes sense? @brandon li
Generally its better to downscale your footage from 4k to 1080 as you won't lose image quality, then to upscale from 1080 to 4k, as you will lose image quality... However, you could upscale in your case and loose image quality if the only option you have is to shoot 96+ fps in 1080p. If you can shoot at 4k at 60fps you could use the software he mentioned in the video (twixtor) to slow down the shots even more to create a more dramatic effect, without it looking too horrible. But the more you slow down, the worse it looks if you are using twixtor.
José, Most filmmakers, like Brandon, film in 4k with the intention of downsampling to 1080 in post. There are many reason for this, including the ability to crop and manipulate the 4k footage. However, as you've just discovered, it's for creative reasons relating to frame rates and motion. Unless you've got a very expensive camera rig, you'll not be shooting 120 fps in 4k (let alone 240), and as Sammy pointed out, your footage won't look good if you upsample/upres to 4k. Just take a 1080 photo into Photoshop and bump it up to 4096 to see how much it degrades. So, use the higher FPS footage (90, 120, 240) at it's native resolution and downsample the 24 fps 4k footage to match, and your film will look great.
ktbeatty so if i shoot in 4k without doing any slow motion do i still need to down sample or does it just apply with shooting in 1080 with the higher frame rates?

I like the way you add a philosophy of why a sting should be used not so much technical but the affect it has on the viewer to capture and hold their attention. They, the viewer, doesn’t know nor do they care they are being held prisoner by their own eyes.

I'm sorry if you've already answered this, but there's over 1000 comments currently! In this video you say that you cannot shoot at 30p and then drop it into a 24p timeline because you will get dropped frames/skipping (3:24). But then later you specifically suggest to slow a 30p recording to 24p to get a nice smooth video(6:00). What am I missing?? Love your channel, thanks for everything you do!
The slow motion buffer thing, I whish my new Sony A7SIII had it. I've used it on my 10yo Sony camcorder. useful when you know something is going to happen, and you don't want to risk filling a card up waiting for it. A cannon shot, a high dive, race start. (on the camcorder), its continuously buffering, hit the shutter, and the last x seconds are saved in slow mo.

30fps = 80% slow motion when stretched out on a 24fps timeline. It stutters when you try to play it at 100% speed, not stretched out (conformed)

It will never be AS smooth as the project frame rate at its original speed. But that DOESN'T mean your footage is useless if you don't always slow down your 30p, 60p, and 120p footage. In other words, if you want the most cinematic/smooth video, always keep your clips conformed to the projects frame rate. But if you have a couple small clips that you recorded in a higher frame rate but you don't want to slow it down, you will be alright... Hope this helps.@@JTCFilms
Just building on this because I was thinking the same, so if I record at 60fps and my project is 24fps, when I conform it the slo Mo won’t be stuttery but the 100% will be of course?

Hey great video, but you seem to target more TV playback than computer screens or mobile devices.
The main issue with 24/25p these days is, that it doesn't align to the 60 Hz of the display which causes a bit stuttering, like exporting 24p material with 30 fps but only half as much, but still it's there and it's annoying.
So if you plan to record stuff for youtube, plan ahead and use 30 fps or even 60 fps for export - that would be my additional advice.
But your very good at your job, I must admit, neat shots. :)

So my question is: if you want to upload in 4k 24fps, but you have to record in 1080p 60fps to make slow motions. Does that mean that one part of the video will be in 4k 24fps while the slowmotion will be 1080p 24fps and the remaining part of the slow motion clip is 1080p 60fps? How do you make that the entire video is uploaded and shownin 4k 24fps??

Generally its better to downscale your footage from 4k to 1080 as you won't lose image quality, then to upscale from 1080 to 4k, as you will lose image quality... However, you could upscale in your case and loose image quality if the only option you have is to shoot 96+ fps in 1080p. If you can shoot at 4k at 60fps you could use the software he mentioned in the video (twixtor) to slow down the shots even more to create a more dramatic effect, without it looking too horrible. But the more you slow down, the worse it looks if you are using twixtor.

Most filmmakers, like Brandon, film in 4k with the intention of downsampling to 1080 in post. There are many reason for this, including the ability to crop and manipulate the 4k footage. However, as you've just discovered, it's for creative reasons relating to frame rates and motion. Unless you've got a very expensive camera rig, you'll not be shooting 120 fps in 4k (let alone 240), and as Sammy pointed out, your footage won't look good if you upsample/upres to 4k. Just take a 1080 photo into Photoshop and bump it up to 4096 to see how much it degrades. So, use the higher FPS footage (90, 120, 240) at it's native resolution and downsample the 24 fps 4k footage to match, and your film will look great.

No! From what I understand, the only reason why people downscale 4K footage to 1080p is to match the rest of their footage (in 1080p).

48fps the song should x2 the normal play speed and x3 the play speed for 60 fps

I like the way you add a philosophy of why a sting should be used not so much technical but the affect it has on the viewer to capture and hold their attention. They, the viewer, doesn’t know nor do they care they are being held prisoner by their own eyes.

I'm sorry if you've already answered this, but there's over 1000 comments currently! In this video you say that you cannot shoot at 30p and then drop it into a 24p timeline because you will get dropped frames/skipping (3:24). But then later you specifically suggest to slow a 30p recording to 24p to get a nice smooth video(6:00). What am I missing?? Love your channel, thanks for everything you do!
The slow motion buffer thing, I whish my new Sony A7SIII had it. I've used it on my 10yo Sony camcorder. useful when you know something is going to happen, and you don't want to risk filling a card up waiting for it. A cannon shot, a high dive, race start. (on the camcorder), its continuously buffering, hit the shutter, and the last x seconds are saved in slow mo.
