    An interesting factor that people usually don't take into account when analysing Björk and some other Icelandic singers is that Icelandic as a language is full of glottal stops and pre aspirated consonants. Also the accented syllable is always the first one in any word. Ie a lot Björk's specific stylings are very influenced by her mother tongue

    • @NainUsar
      @NainUsar 2 роки тому +21

      Wow, now that you mention that, that makes so much sense. I even see some instances of the Icelandic language were glottal stops or consonants are just "created" even when the actual words and letters don't require those, just to make it conform to the Icelandic "tongue". Very interesting.

      Also worth noting is that Beth talked about each word being separate and not legato - this probably originates from the Icelandic song storytelling tradition.

    There are many extraordinary artists in this world, but Bjork stands alone as a titan in my mind. When she sings about a seashell, it's like the seashell expressing itself before humans ever gave it its name. Straight from the salty foam, raw, sensual in its honesty! I hope lots of people discover her.

      This was my exact thought after recently watching a YT video of her performing "Pagan Poetry" on the Letterman show. Her songs are always wonderfully inventive, so meticulously crafted and performed that in my mind there are very few artists in the last half century that approach her level.

    One of those songs where her rich, beaming voice and evocative lyrics are just glowing - another example would be "Play Dead", this magnificent track that would have been at home in a Wagner opera ("Die Walküre"?)

    • @Thaum1el
      @Thaum1el 2 роки тому +6

      Yes, this is the one I was thinking about too, everything she does here, she does in Play Dead but almost even more so. For the chorus with those controlled peaks combined with growls. It's beyond almost everything.
      For Beth, I'm sure you've heard it, but if you didn't, that's a track you can put on repeat for a day if you need to clear your head at some point.

    A lot of trained singers don’t like her being so far afield from their training so it’s nice to see one that appreciates her. I personally put her up there with the top phrasers like Sinatra and Willie and she has more to work with in terms of natural gift and power, such an amazing artist. As others here say there seems to be a huge tie to her Icelandic upbringing in both delivery and atmosphere.

    Anyone here seen "Dancer in the dark"? Its sort of a musical . Bjørk's caracter sings a lot to herself in that movie. The sort of singing one does on the buss. Humming.
    And I can see what Beth means, I think. Bjørk tries to hum for herself, but it comes out as hardly a whisper. And when she pushes harder it becomes way to loud. And everyone becomes like "shut up!". So she ends up just singing in her head.
    Great movie. Don't watch it unless you are very very happy.

      DCD, TMC, Radiohead, Portishead, Massive Attack, ... os much good soundscape stuff came from that era, not even mentioning grunge ofc. Oh, I did mention that. And The Gathering. :^)
      Still so much to cover from that era Beth: Singers like Liz Fraser, Tom Yorke, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry and ofc Anneke in her original natural environment, either with TG (TG25 Travel), or acoustic, like this one with Arjen: ua-cam.com/video/bkbM1VjtV3k/v-deo.html Enjoy! ;)

  • @glacieractivity

    This is one of the few videos I uptick before even starting them. Her use of vowels is stemming from ancient Nordic singing tradition. She does not sing "get" - she sings it as "gæt" and stretch that Æ. This is vowel-swapping more than "accent". Aurora, also inspired by traditional singing, that vocalists like yourself often mistakenly call "yodelling" (Norse "Lokk/Kulning") developed independently from the central European technique of yodelling with the same mission - to travel in mountainous landscapes). "Vowel swapping" is perfectly normal here in Scandinavia when artists sing in their own languages. I have heard Sigur Ros use it - with this old idea that pronunciation must bend to the musical quality.
    So when Bjørk changes "get" to the prolonged tonal "gææt" to open the vowel - it is more from tradition than from accent. The vowel is informed by the composition and its mood.
    Regarding Bjørk not carrying the words into the next tone and next word - again Aurora is doing the same. They both sometimes "snap" the lyrics to a specific note - causing that "staccato" feeling - as a human "autotune" effect. Again, old Nordic folk-music traditions. Because as we know with Aurora, she often breaks that up with sliding vowels ("Through the Eyes of a Child" in Nidarosdomen as en example when she is "yodelling" an emotion - Again Sigur Ros calls that non-verbal glissando of the voice "Hopelandic")
    The early push of Bjørk, I never noticed that as a non-singer. But you outlined that issue really well. Neither Aurora nor Eivør or ABBA (!) known to use vowel swapping in English-lyrical pop-music did that.
    As a non-vocalist - the composition though. Bjørk sure knows to tie together some notes. And sure knows how to let the composition lift off this planet while she singlehandedly grounds it with her raw and grounded emotions as the composition soars around her.

    • @auradmg
      @auradmg 28 днів тому

      The pronunciation of vowels and comparison to Aurora is really interesting, I've noticed that Aurora does it as well with 'uh' sounds (not that I knew about the concepts that you've described here until just now, I just thought it was a pretty, stylistic thing) in the way that she pronounces 'love' more like 'lauve' but only when singing. When she speaks, it's the regular vowel that sounds 'correct' with her accent.

    the thing that makes Björk so special is exactly the reason,that she never sang like any other....the way she sings "staccato" ,and her vocal highs sounded more like "controlled" screams made an impact in all of us....she somehow embodied the animal side of feeling and singing, nervously waiting and the releasing her energy in music.... i can imagine,this affected her voice in the long run( especially when you have to replicate it night by night on tour for decades ) .....after all she said , that she used to sing near the sea back in Iceland, and there was pretty strong wind so you had to be loud.....that imprinting marked her vocal style.....now she doesn't do that much anymore , is more relaxed and ventures into musical spheres that i don' t quite understand ....but hoiw many unique songs has she gifetd us with.....i've seen her twice and i'll never forget those concerts

    One thing I love about Björk and other singers like the late Franco Battiato, Natalie Merchant or the late great Antonio Vega is that they sing for themselves, they don't care (in the good sense) about the public. They'd sing in front of thousands of people as if they were singing alone in their studio.

    A bit of a shame that the focus of Beth's analysis seems to be on the fact that Björk eventually developed a vocal nodule IMO. I'm much more interested in how and why she is such a prolific and effective singer! How and why she is such a powerful messenger of emotions and primal sensations!
    Indeed, Björk sang professionally from a very young age, and toured extensively for so many decades. It's not too much of a surprise to me that such an extremely exercised body part might wear a bit thin. Let me tell you about the various ways my own body is holding up at age 66...

    Bjork gives me shivers. Deeply affective. Primal.

    I love Bjork, you should totally react to her live performance of "All is Full of Love"

    Björk has been an artist for a long time. From what i heard when she was young she used to go onstage without warming up , wanting a raw sound. Which might have contributed to her problems later

    Sounds like something from a 70s Bond Movie. Opening credits. 😉

    There’s no point trying to analyse Bjork.
    She’s completely unique.
    Crazy that she produces most of the music too.

    I watched a vocal coach react to this song earlier, all he could focus on were her hands and laugh at her open mouth, in total he was an ass. Beth is somebody that knows her craft, a skilled coach and somebody that understands how and why a human voice sounds the way it does.

    I don't have favourites in music, but I do have a top shelf. And this person is cemented on that shelf... Maybe the best vocalist ever??

    Beth, love you and your channel. Love how much you know your craft. Question: (please forgive if you've answered 1000 times!) Has any of the singers that you reviewed contacted you? Would love to see a video on that. (Even if they have to remain anonymous!)
