Beth Gibbons doesn’t do the sort of over the top, in your face emotion of someone like Adele or Yebba. Hers is an ache rather than a wrenching pain. You don’t get a shotgun blast of pain to the face, rather you feel the pain pulling at you from underneath. It’s so much more subtle and less dramatic. Nobody can do this quite like she can. It’s just amazing.
while there are those who take their emotions out to the rest of the world to see
beth brings the rest of the world to her emotions which gives her music a sense of intimacy
Layne Staley definitely does while singing Nutshell live and Wake up from Mad season
First time I heard this amazing song was in an old Toyota Corolla, during a thunderstorm, watching the wipers move in time to the beat. I'll keep that memory forever.
Nice memory!!!!
That’s gorgeous. I was there with you when I read that.
yeah, that's not gonna go away.
now I hear the rain and your wipers. They were always there.
Now that's an image, you describe it so evocatively I think I'll start remembering it too now lol.
No way! I'm i dreaming?! a reaction to Portishead, one of the most exquisites bands of all time!!! WOW!!
HELL YEAH!!!
Here in México we love Portishead too
nto the most exquisite but a very underrated one for sure. there's a bunch of lofi bands ut portishead is so underrated
@@chinasky800 we are big faaaans!!!!!! Ya tenía rato de no escucharlos y recorde por que me gustan taaaaaaanto
Here in Korea, we love Portishead as well!!!
What a song, what a singer, what band. It's as close to perfection as I think anyone has a right to get to. Beautiful and heartbreaking.
She's the essence of cool.
Portishead, supreme beings of leisure bring back good memories.
perfectly said x
Beth's voice is sooooo beautiful ... and the mix with the orchestra ... breathtaking..
I saw Portishead in Munich when I was 15. They played this last, and you could’ve heard a pin drop. Absolute perfection live
i saw them in stockholm in '99. they did this as an encore after being brought back to the stage. i was waiting for this song the whole show. same thing, everyone was solemnly in silence and if someone had dropped a pin, i would have heard it.
Her voice breaks my heart.
Weird, I was having a Triphop morning with Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead! Dummy is a beautiful album
Fun fact: Will Gregory is there playing and he played as a session musician with Tears for Fears at their height, and would go on to form Goldfrapp with Alison Goldfrapp. A great band.
@@theshocker4626 love Felt Mountain :)
Good times
@@matthewyip8695 Sour Times XD
Sounds like you’re having a great morning! 🥰
Goosebumps every single time I hear this.
This entire concert is amazing! Between this & probably Radiohead Live from the Basement are me most played live shows that I rewatch over & over that never gets old.
Fuckin A!👍
Believe it or not I saw Radiohead when no one knew who they were...in a basement at a place called The Nile Theater in Mesa AZ
@@theshocker4626 that's a shocker...
I love it at the end, where Beth apologises for being shit!!
I still have this concert recorded off radio 1 back in the late 90’s on cassette
"It's the things that aren't technically perfect in this, that make it amazing."
Pretty much the best summation of Portishead's music I've heard.
If you dont cry to this song you have no soul its heartbreakingly beautiful first time I heard it I sobbed Beth's voice just tore at your heartstrings
Dummy shaped my life. Every time I listen to any of their songs, I still feel the same soul gripping feelings. Beth is incredible.
Portishead is one of the best trip hop groups. The voice of Beth is the shining star.
One could say her voice is... a... wandering star...
Zero 7 w/ Sia is better! Jeff Buckley w/ Liz Frasier is better!
Beth is so incredibly emotive when she sings. She looks like she will break down at any moment. Amazing.
Beth Gibbons sings with her whole body .
. She draws u into her emotional
being . You can feel her frailty and I love her for it . The whole self titled album is just beautiful and Beth Gibbons is a huge part of what makes it that way . How can someone sound so sad and not be depressing ? She is a force of nature .
Bjork does the same thing.
👏👏👏
FINALLY Portishead!!
YES, YES!!! I've been waiting for this reaction. I've been a fan of Portishead since the 90s.
One of my favorite band of all time. Beth Gibbons is such a great singer, her voice always gives me the chillz
I remember hearing Dummy for the first time, a buddy of mine played it for me. I was so blown away I went out and bought it, phenomenal album.
I've been a huge fan of Portishead since the 90s, and this song is simply amazing. I love her breathly vocals.
Absolutely brilliant. I’m so glad I got to experience them live in my lifetime
The way she creates the mood she wants you to feel with her vocal stylings is incredible!
Beth Gibbons is a badass!
A few years ago Portishead was headlining Melt! festival. The organizers shut down all other stages for their performance. In over 20 years I haven't seen this happening. Not once, for no other band. And it felt right.
Thank you for reminding me how much I love Portishead.
I have loved Portishead since about '96 when Brittish trip-hop came to the states... Bands like this, Tricky, Sneaker Pimps, and Massive Attack were all in my album rotation. Thanks for doing this one.❤❤
Yessss! Although for me I didn’t catch on until 1999ish. But this brings back so many good memories! 🎶
Snap! Discovered them in 96 and then promptly moved onto Tricky, Massive Attack, and Sneaker Pimps and Lamb.
I grew up in Bristol and I often wondered what the hell you guys in the states made of this lot.
Bristol is a tiny city in comparison to most US cities. Was a great time to live there in the 90s. I lived on the same street as Daddy G and we shared a corner shop for late night booze and munchie runs. Fun days. Often bumped into him.
If you don't know Portishead, you've got to listen to the whole "Dummy" album...
And dont forget the rest of them. Seriously, Dummy is great but the other two get overlooked a bit too much.
@@vanihm I actually prefer Third to Dummy nowadays. It's intense.
@@mysticsaxophone4181 Me too... But I'm so happy there made 3 albums, only three but without concession
@@gabrielk2295 don't forget the live album PNYC which is where I think this performance is from.
I see Beth roars I click. I see Portishead I click. I see both, I sprain my finger.
Update: how is your finger?
Update: Underrated COMMENT! 🏆
Much love to my fellow Portishead enthusiasts!! Portishead is one of the most amazing bands that most people have never heard of. I was lucky to be in Europe and saw them live very early in their career and was blown away at how good they were.
Beth Gibbons! Have always loved her voice.
Beth’s voice yanks at your feels from the inside
One of their best is The Rip, the vocals in that reach places mere mortals can not.
I've been waiting for this for a long time. Portishead is beyond amazing.
Last year Beth recorded Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs (by Henryk Górecki) with The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. It's also beautiful.
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy next? Shara Nelson is so good in this one.
Good recommendation, the most Bristol of Bristol Sound.
She recorded with Polish Orchestra? I didn't know that. Very cool
Its the most heartbreaking and moving recording of the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs I've encountered. She brings true emotion and pain to it as opposed to the operatic sopranos who are on almost all of the commercial recordings of it.
i find Beth Gibbons' voice both beautiful and incredibly haunting at the same time. so good
That entire concert is legendary. The arrangements and Beth's voice are a thing of beauty. Great analysis, I'm not a musician but you explained everything in a way I could understand what you were talking about.
Great video, thank you!!!
you said something along the lines of that it's her breaks from perfect form that make it so good, and i feel like you're right in that, and also that it's entirely genuine. she's putting her being into it. she's singing from herself. that makes such a difference when it comes to singing
I got chills just as the camera panned teh studio. Even before the first note - I`m gone. It was perfection.
Yess, thank you for doing Portishead!!
This was the song I listened non-stop when I was depressed years ago.
Glad that you saw your way through
Yeah, me too. This album and, weirdly enough, Stadium Arcadium.
The emotion in the whole song is what gets me. Beth's singing, the guitar wahwahwah thing, the strings. I think I heard this 1st in an early scene in Tank Girl. Excellent post-apocalyptic movie music
FINALLY she's such a legend
love beth gibbons
I mean Portishead was my favorite music for many, many years, that combination of Soul, Scratch, Jazz, Bett's emotion when singing, the tracks, I mean everything... and without a doubt Jeoff Barrow is an impressive combination of tones and sounds. spend hours listening to the same thing without getting tired, because it's just great, and then I listened to Psychedelic Trance Music, and my bases were always classical music, I don't listen to that music anymore, only Gospel music, but I know how to recognize the talent that God gives to the people... Thank you very much for sharing your analysis.. 🙋🏼💜
For me with this song, the sweet spot is when the bass guitar kicks in, it's so gentle, emotional, soulful and perfectly fills the void when Beth stops singing.
Beth's voice is sensational and how she uses it in a more emotional and delicate way rather than just trying to project is such a powerful thing, it makes these such a unique band and makes them still sound fresh as ever! I love how they play together too, it's almost telepathic how perfectly in step with each other they are.
Dummy is still one of the best albums to ever come out of this tiny island though and barely anybody realises how important it is!
I moment in time captured by Portishead, good times. Devastating raw emotion. Thanks for doing your analysis on 1 of many of my favorite 90s band's Beth, have a awesome day😃
my favorite singer at all
Beth Gibbons was the most charismatic woman when I was in highschool. Holding mic with a cigarette between her fingers, head a little down. Damn.. You get what I say.
This performance is fantastic. I bought the CD and DVD when it came out and it is still in my playlists. Live @ Roseland NYC is a must see.
She is one of more iconic singers ever ! And it is NOT an opinion, it is a FACT !! 😍✨💜✨
Thanks for Covering my fav singer. It looked like you were struggling to not sing along in the second verse. Had a chuckle at the "not doing anything bad for her voice" since she is smoking during a few of the songs at the concert.
One of the best their songs. It's just perfect...
I saw Portishead on this tour in Atlanta and it is still my favorite show of all time. Absolutely floored every time I hear them.
One of our finest female singers is Beth Gibbons. On tracks like this she never tries to outplay the music, she uses her vibrato to compliment the quivering strings and doesn't resort to histrionics. On more electronic tracks she snarls and screeches, curling words around the notes and banging them high notes like a steam whistle about to blow! Divine. Underrated. Beautiful.
I LOVE Portishead!!!
Absolutely love this song ever since it came out.
Beth Gibbons still my all time fav female singer for ever and ever! Such a unique voice, man!
Love from Hungary 🇭🇺 💜
Respect ✌️ 🙏
Thank you for ur vid
I've have always loved Beth Gibbons from the moment I heard her, I've had the privilege to see her live over 20 yrs ago and I still count it as one of my too few best ever concerts
Well miss Roars,
This is the first time ive heard this kind of assment i appreciated your thoughts thank you Beth for your assesment ❤it
Amazing song. First time I heard it was at the ending scene of the 1995 film "Little Criminals" and ever since it's stuck with me. Instantly recognisable by just the first note and then all I can picture is the scene from the film lol.
Beth Gibbons is a living angel
This makes me happy.
Very happy.
One of my favourite songs of all time.
By far one of my favorite singers for sure.
oh yay! I love portishead so much.
This was live at roseland I think, what an incredible show
I had that VHS at one point in time, It was killer.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
So much love for portishead!!!
The band that made the soundtrack to a film that never happened. One of the greatest bands of all time artistically, up there with Tool and A Perfect Circle and Massive Attack
My favorite female vocalist on the planet! You should also check out her live performance of Threads. Shows a heavier intense side to her vocals.
She moves quote a bit air with her Voice, which speaks lack of power.
I do like Portishead, but there are better singers out there.

@@Battlenude I don't really care.
Beth is the best... she can explain even for dummies like me... like music.. this is a giant band... musicians... precise ones... closing eyes and listen! this beats and .... oh man
I have long said that this is the most perfect album, most perfect concert to have ever occurred. Live at Roseland NYC is simply amazing from start to finish. I so very much wish I could have been there and it broke my heart when they closed down the Roseland Ballroom even though my only experience of it is through this album and video. Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to one of my all time favorites. Roar on!
After all these years that organ riff still gives me a chill. She pinches off those phrasings masterfully
Beth Gibbons. My all-time favourite female singer.
Just goes to show you don't have to sing 20 notes up and down the scales to convey emotion and to connect with people. Beth is an incredible though painfully shy vocalist.
I love how you let yourself express your full emotions
It’s so refreshing I agree
I love the way half way through the audience realize they’re clapping and stop, as it dawns on them just what they’re experiencing.
You need to check out this whole concert it's called Portishead Roseland NYC Live. It is amazing.
Ahh, I love this song. Performance is so intimate and beautiful.
Beth is the voice of my heart literally
I love Portishead so much
THANK YOU UA-cam FOR RECOMMENDING THIS
Lump in my throat ... Thanks Beth (to both...)
Live in Roseland NYC, cada cancion supero a la original, con creces. disco eterno y perfecto
I can never listen to this song without crying. It's so full of emotion and lonlyness. One of the best singers there ever was/is.
Love Beth!!! Love Portishead. Such a mood👌🏻
I'm so glad you chose this song. I suggested this version last week in the comments because it's one of the most heartfelt performances I've ever seen. Thanks, Beth!
I love hearing Beth Gibions !!
Still 1 of my all time favourites! Hits all those feels.
This is the BEST live album ever!!!
Amoooo está banda y amo tus videoss
All 4 of their records (yep, including Roseland) are phenomenal. Like the Sundays (another Bristol act that never gets the credit they deserve, though of the indie, Britpop variety) Portishead never had a bad release or even a below average moment.
I don't know how many times I've watched this video but the overwhelming consensus is that I agree with everything you say here.
Your taste in music for your reacts is impeccable!
Exelente grupo; exelente canción, muy buen análisis de esta distinguida dama. Felicidades.!!!!
De las mejores bandas que han existido.
Yes! Trip hop is my rainy day tunes.
Not sure if this has been said, but Portishead, Tricky and many other triphop bands were, I just found out, inspired by Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy. It used the strings with samples and beats and great vocals to show triphop could be more. More amazing, more reaching, more feeling. Many triphop artists glommed on to the style. So fucking good.
I've seen a few of your reactions and I love em. Plus luv trip hop, portishead.
I cry everytime I hear it. 3rd time tonight!!!
Love your reaction to one of my favourit live act...
this song has been on my most payed list for years 👍absolutely haunting
I have always loved Portishead vocally, instrumentality & lyrically n0w your breakdown has added a whole other dimension. Waycool!
