2024 F1 Monaco GP analysis by Peter Windsor

- Ferrari's Charles Leclerc cruised to victory in his home race in Monte-Carlo, moving Prince Albert to tears on the podium and bringing the traffic in all of Monaco - and much of the south of France - to a standstill. It was also a big day for Pirelli, with their hard and medium compound tyres running the full GP distance non-stop due to a red flag incident on the opening lap. With every driver thus being given a free tyre change in the pit lane, and with Monaco uniquely offering a low-abrasion track surface, the onus was on Leclerc to run his hard-compound tyres through to the finish and to win at the slowest possible pace. On paper, Pirelli said that this would be possible. In reality, Leclerc was stepping into the F1 Unknown. He pulled it off, though, with McLaren-Mercedes' Oscar Piastri brilliantly chasing him virtually all the way. Indeed, the four leading drivers - Leclerc, Piastri, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris (all of whom switched to hard tyres for the re-start) - were often covered by no more than four seconds - a spectacular sight at Monaco, where the leader in other years has usually broken away to secure an easy margin. George Russell drove exceptionally well to finish fifth for Mercedes, running Pirelli mediums non-stop to beat Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen (who stopped on lap 52 to switch from mediums to used hards). Despite the fresh rubber, Verstappen could do nothing about Russell, who made no errors on his older tyres, thereby proving the concept of a "free stop" on this day to be moot. Charles deserved the win and 25 points, but Carlos and Ferrari were each gifted 15 undeserved points.
Carlos punctured his tire by running into Piastri's McLaren. It was his fault, and yet he got way with it. Those additional points could be worth millions to either of the two teams come the end of the season. Yet another freebie for Ferrari.
They should be winning every week as they get so much additional help from the FIA (Ferrari Investors Association) and the extra money they receive for 'good attendance' since the beginning of the F1 Championships.

First time he has been kind of off putting though…it’s such ridiculous bs that it comes off like propaganda….objectively no one with a brain can say that was enjoyable…a much faster car regardless of how many laps they have being faster had zero possibility of passing the car in front of
I think if he'd had to watch it on television like us he would see it the same way we do. F1 cars are always exciting to see in real life even if nothing happens. Those of us not fortunate enough to be there had a lot of trouble staying awake. Nice podium though 😄

Agreed. Monaco is the gold plated turd of the F1 world. Sure it has all the glitz and glam and the high society but the race has no soul xD
Still super happy that Charles achieved one of his great ambitions, but other than that there was no spectacle here.
Sure Monaco has a long F1 tradition, but should Monaco keep out a better racing track purely because of said tradition? That is a debate to have.
I think most people would probably prefer a track like Hockenheim back in the fray over Monaco

Yes it was emotional, yes it was fantastic to see Charles win yes a superb win. That does not mean it wasn't a sn00ze fest. It was 75 laps of tire management simulation.
Monaco is all about Saturday. The qualifying session is often so much more entertaining than almost all other venues for Saturdays. It does make Sunday tedious if it doesn't rain, but it's still great to see F1 cars there, and there are 23 other races if this weekend isn't for you.
Not just Saturday, Friday was fantastic ! the bad race talk is true, but its the one race we get a fully qualy centric weekend. but they could also make 2 stop mandatory to keep interest during the race itself.

@ab8jeh This is such a lame argument for keeping Monaco. I'd even argue China was a more enjoyable qualifying than Monaco this year. We pretty much knew the order it was going to be before Q1. The race itself was absolutely pointless and brought nothing to the table. You had drivers going five seconds off the pace because they knew they could get away with it since it's impossible to overtake without having a massive tire offset, and even then it's not a simple pass
It was boring in terms of action, but I found it very enjoyable, it's so beautiful to see the cars running at such ridiculous speeds around Monaco, the level of skill it takes from all the 19 drivers and Stroll, it's akin to watching art
Peter, did we actually watch the same (disg)race? 2 overtakes in the whole race, no place changes in the top 10? That was not a race. The race was on Saturday and Charles won and really deserved to win. I'm very happy for him. Sunday on the other hand had nothing to do with racing, it was just a procession. A sad day for Formule 1.
This was by far the worst race of the season; such are the races Monaco tends to give us. I like that Charles won, but that was the only thing I liked about this monstrosity.
We might have had a different race without the early red flag; not necessarily exciting but with more intrigue and jeopardy, especially if the usual crash bandicoots bring out a SC.

Nico was Behind, not alongside. His rear wheel was tagged as he passed the stricken Red Bull. He had zero to do with the accident.
He was overtaking Checo and did not leave any room for Checo to safely move left to make room for Kmag. Kmag forced a bad position, kissed the wall spinning his front to the left and into Checo's right rear. 100% Kmag's fault.
@@garymartin9777 He was overtaking Checo when they had already collided. Look at it again, check the replays during the Red Flag, if you can, on F1TV.
@@transient_ Nico only overtook due to the crash. At race speed he was not gaining. If you look at the racing line and how drivers approach the next corner, Checo was actually a bit farther left than ideal, meaning K-Mag was given space. He tagged the wall and spun into Checo. There was never going to be room for him as the line sweeps to the right before the left turn. Just really dumb.
@@f.kieranfinney457 I agree, Nico wasn't at fault at all. Checo had enough room to avoid Kmag if he wanted. If I remember correctly; Kmag had his front wheel slightly past the rear wheels of Checo. Checo steered a bit to the right, they collided and Kmag had nowhere to go except towards the wall. I'm not saying Checo was at fault, you can also say Kmag should have braked. It was a racing incident, in my opinion.
@@transient_ Nico’s front wheel was alongside Checo’s wing. How would he move left to give space without crashing Nico? The track narrows. There’s not space for two let alone three. It’s not the driver ahead who should yield, that’s not the rule. This is a Haas crash entirely.
I'm afraid Monaco has long outlived its expiry date. Unless you are actually there in person enjoying all the glitz and glamour, it simply doesn't make sense anymore. The track is way too narrow, and always has been. It's a ridiculous track to stage an F1 race. The race was very much a processional snore festival to watch, even though it was wonderful to see Leclerc take the win. Moreover, IMHO, F1 was much more interesting when it had two major tire manufacturers competing against one another.

The cars are too big for that circuit. If they can widen the road somehow, then go ahead. But right now Monaco and those cars are not compatible at all as far as I can tell.

absolutely delighted about Charles winning this one, and Carlos at P3. F1 has become very much of a passion again since mid 2021 and I'm not exclusively a RB fan (for both drivers!) but other teams I also support gladly. I feel It's good that there's more competitiveness all of a sudden and absolutely very pleased that also McLaren is in the mix now. Seeing Oscar also on the podium, can only say I was chuffed about that too! My heart skippedbeats then went racing when that crash occured bringing the red flag. Horror ! but happy to know everyone were sound and in 1 piece...
It wasnt spectacular but we didnt expect much either with these huge cars on these narrow streets in a tyre management competition.

KMag once again makes a huge impact on a 2024 race. The man has put a sizzle in the season, should get a legitmate award for it!
I literally fell a sleep middle race. I like the prestige around Monaco, but they should spice it up, as at least two mandatory pit stops, different track layout, as having smaller cars. They could also make a special GP, where it counts the cumulative average lap time.

I loved this race. I always enjoy Monaco because I've driven around the track a few years ago and realise how talented the drivers are and really appreciate their driving skills around such a tight track. I'm a big Carlos fan but thoroughly enjoyed Charles' win which was well deserved. Always keep this race no matter what the naysayers spout. Nice report Peter. Keep up the good work.
Maybe not an exciting race, but it might turn out to be an important one.
To who? Not the fans, Not the sponsors, Not the drivers, this race at Monaco was about as pointless as could be ... just do qualifying and call it a day, no need to race.
For me it's important for Charles. Breaking his Monaco "curse" has many of us hoping it takes his driving and confidence to the next level. 👍

Agree it was a brilliant win for Charles. But have to disagree about Monaco being great for the spectators - it really isn't. Every year it's a major bore and this year was no different.

I've heard it said that for a proffesional driver the point is to win the race while driving at the slowest possible speed , that was certainly on show today.
That’s Prost that said that. It’s his personal philosophy. Others completely disagree and would want to win by as much as possible. It happened here because of tire preservation, not driver preference. In fact Charles wanted to go faster, it made him uncomfortable going so slow.

About the tyres lasting a whole race, in Australia 2022 Albon made a pitstop on the last lap to comply. Made the Hards effectively last the whole race

In Senna's days the cars ware a heck of a lot smaller and lighter though. Now everyone just is forced to drive the pace of the dude in front who can then set the pace to be so comfy that mistakes are a lot less likely. There are every much not driving on the limit of tire/car performance.

Wow, I must say that making something out of absolutely nothing is a talent. Appreciate the insights of each and every GP by Peter but this was an absolute disaster of a race. I’m sure people at the track enjoyed it, but the terms ‘spectacular’ cannot be applied here. Very happy for Charles. I know I’m stretching it a bit but I’m starting to believe that journalists are in love with the weekend at Monaco because the parties and the glamour of it. Yesterday was an absolute snorefest.
You are 100% correct. It’s not a race for TV audiences, we have 20 or so other races in the season to enjoy.
Monaco was and is an event for the drivers, teams and those attending the race weekend. I’ve been to many F1 races around the world and was lucky enough to attend Monaco in 2011. Without doubt it was head and shoulders the best F1 weekend I’ve ever experienced.
This was a procession , never a race. The cars are bloated overweight. No chance this was a race.
I know nothing much happened but I was so tense hoping for nothing to happen so Charles could finally win. Sorry to the people who thought it was boring but it was so worth it to see Charles win it finally.

There should be a rule that if there is a red flag then the teams can't change to a different tyre compound so that it doesn't count as a mandatory pitstop.
Yea, i remember this being spoken about not too long ago. It does make more sense now that the stewards throw red flags more often.

Part of winning a race is that you drove flat out cutting every corner to the mm. This race was 4 seconds a lap slower and missing the corners by a meter. Any F3 driver could win from the front the way the race was run. Even the drivers found it totally boring apart from Leclerc.

I was a casual viewer until I stumbled on F1 racing magazine in mid 90s. PW’s articles was always an highlight. The piece he did on Ronnie Petersen’s accident at Monza left an impression.

As always the love for f1 flows out on this channel. I get to watch one race a year because we have 3 infants and I picked this one. I was on my edge the whole time and I’m not a Charles fan but I was rooting like H for him. Such an amazing moment in f1 history.
I would like to see free red flag tire change not count as charging compound. This would force teams to make a “proper” stop in the race.

@@davidhaworth7152 the downside is it's incredibly wasteful and makes the tire manufacturer look incompetent in presenting them as not being able to make tires that last. Forcing 1 change is the best available compromise right now.
That's stupid. You realize how absurd it would be that you're able to repair and change substantial parts of your car including the suspension, wings or brakes during a red flag yet you're not able to change something as simple as a tire in order to try and create fake excitement/a fake scenario? That's never going to be done and for perfectly good reason.
@@deyeatdapoopoo7582 you would still be allowed to change your set or compound during the red flag. The only change this would have is that changing compounds during the red flag WOULD NOT count as one of the two required compounds ran. It also wouldn’t really be meaningfully more wasteful because if you can make on one change during red flag then you can stop with 10 laps left and put on some scrubbed softs from FP since you only need a few laps. Also, this doesn’t happen every race.
You could also just change the rules so that you can change to another set of the same compound unless wets are needed during a red flag. This would remove some of the strategy from the team’s control which is why I don’t like as much.

I watched from home and thought it was a fascinating race. Watching Charles dance with jeopardy, managing his tyres whilst managing the gaps and cars behind him was magnificent. Seeing the back markers and midfield fly on fresh tyres through in the jeopardy of the top guys taking a fresh pair of boots and flying at the end, and the endless question of whether track position or fresh tyres were more important. Great race

Where did you see competition? Everyone pulled back to let him drive. Even his engineers said “we are not interested” to let him drive faster when he asked.

All good and well, but when drivers with seconds a lap pace advantage can not overtake, it is basically not a race. I would suggest to keep Monaco, but just make it a quali match with decreasing amounts of drop outs. Like: Saturday Q1 sees five out, Q2 sees four out, Q3 sees three out and then on Sunday the remaining eight drop out one by one. And off course do increasingly softer compounds when dry conditions.
Charles finally winning his home GP with Ferrari was absolutely beautiful and brilliant to see. I was so happy. He deserved it more than anyone else. As for the racing part of the race, well it wasn't exactly thrilling but it also wasn't as bad as some negative people are making it out to be. But I was mostly just concentrated on nervously counting down the laps and hoping that nothing bad happens to Charles' car. It was such a wonderful moment when he crossed the finish line.
Always appreciate hearing the upside of F1 racing from you, thx. There does come a time when the politics and the personalities overshadows the ability to see actual racing.and the joy it meant to Charles and to Monaco.

For what looked like a boring season of Max/RBR dominance has turned into a pleasant surprise with Lando getting his first win and now this for Charles. I hope there are more races with drivers winning this season where it has a good story.

Charles' win is nice, but race was crappie.
This was the only time in 14 years of watching F1 that I have fast forwarded a race. It was clear from lap 4 that there wasn’t going to be any attempts at passing. Then without the pit stops there was no reason to watch.
Whilst it was basically a F2 pace drive around, seeing Charles Leclerc win the monaco grand prix for the first time has to make this race memerable.
Indy 500 had a record number of lead changes across 16 drivers.
It was great to see Charles win at home but it was real snore.
Indy 500 is not motor racing.

What I didn’t like about this race is that more and more drivers are not fighting anymore but rather calculating risks and rewards
Some are but not all. It just made little sense here. I mean then sure when you have drivers like Vettel who is more concerned about safety then racing...but thank you God he is gone.

Hey Peter! Are you doing a rundown on the Indy 500 race? I would love to hear your thoughts on that race, was an awesome edition as well with the last couple laps pato playing poker.
Moving forward, for Monaco, they should only allow the two softest compounds that Pirelli makes and force a minimum of two stops. Do it!

Well Peter, how about a chapeau to Oscar, he ran the whole race with a badly damaged floor courtesy of Carlos! Still managed to push Charles until traffic gave a gap and then his tyres went off due to lack of downforce from damaged floor!
I enjoyed the race too. After the restart I thought it would be predictable until the final 10 laps when all hell would be unleashed. I really wanted Charles to win too, he deserved that. By the way, according to Sky's Ted, Jimmy Zs club costs around 14,000 Euros for an inside table, this includes a bottle of fizzy plonk!

Every circuit is different. As well, things change during a race. Monaco has evolved as it has for a manifold of reasons. Great race, for people who understand nuance and the differences.

Being the first driver from your country to win your home race is already huge, but nobody else will be that jewel in the crown. You can argue that it's a procession, but each track has it's character and challenge. I watch and enjoy

nothing wrong with hope but I am afraid this was an exception. Even though, the fact that MCL did so well here as well, makes me hope just a little bit.
