Up there with the best in jazz.I first heard this haunting number in 1959. Since then I have heard the best; Harry Allen joins them....proper job! Thanks for rthe posting.
harry allen looks like alfred hitchcock in this video. but he sounds, as always, tremendous. a true chameleon of tones. knows how to get all the sounds of past masters plus his own unique tone. interesting he uses a baritone reed on an old link that may be too wide for a modern tenor reed. what a huge sound
Harry is very crafty in mixing the ideas, phrasing and sound of three ballad masters Stan Getz, Ben Webster and Zoot Sims (who was himself influenced by Webster). And he was very smart not to play any solo: it can get too long and destroy the structure.

Pure Black Soul sub sound wind !!! Like Colememan Hawks , ben Webster or PRES ! PAUL GONÇALVES BLESS YOU ,SIR !!!❤❤❤❤
This guy may be the greatest ballad player on tenor. He captures both Webster and Getz
I totally got Getz from it too :-) especially around 1:20 to 1:40
Very, very nice! Sweet, soulful--echoes of the great Ben Webster. Just beautiful!
This saxophonist is phenomenal. Gets the tone of Billy Strayhorn's classic just right. Rest of the band is excellent as well.
Every notes are on theirs time. What a master.
It just doesn't get any better than this.

Strange embouchure, but it seems to work just fine nonetheless. ;)
