    These are two fabulous jazz tenors!! Bravo! Thanks for the post!

    Great playing from the two tenors and what a rhythm section. I just love Steve Brown's work, tasteful, listening and swings like mad. Plays for the band and not for himself.

    Diggin' the sax duo transcription of Ben Webster's original solo after the in-head.

    I love the way these guys have so much to say without having to resort to the altissimo register,maybe its not a modern approach but the effortless execution as well as the content of all of those passages must be admired by all who appreciate good jazz

      Agreed!

    • @martindalmasi5340
      @martindalmasi5340 Рік тому

      It’s the BEST approach. All that altissimo is often a showboat that goes nowhere. If you can’t play the horn pretty where it is, then what’s the point? These guys DO

    • @martindalmasi5340
      @martindalmasi5340 Рік тому

      Let me tell you a Scott anecdote- Flip Phillips gave him a bear hug one night- “why”? “Because you played the horn right- there was a guy here last night screaming all over the horn, it was disastrous”

    Man, oh man. You lucky person! Harry Allen is one of the best players I've ever heard. This style isn't my favorite, but I've studied it a lot, and Harry's inventiveness is amazing...just when you think you've heard every possibility, Harry lays out about ten more! Marvelous.

    • @jeepjockey9219
      @jeepjockey9219 7 років тому +1

      Two quite different sounds! Both absorbingly inventive and swinging. Scott is possibly the most lyrical ballad player around and shows how he thinks as he plays. To say one is more proficient than the other is critically naive. Might as well say Paul Desmond is more "proficient'than Johnny Hodges! Pointless and musically not evidence based.

    I met and saw Harry Allen perform in person and he is a truly incredible person. He was talking about he knew Scott's style inside-out because Scott was his main inspiration as a kid, so they were a perfect complement to each other. It's an amazing dream-come-true story! He also discussed how much he loved Ben Webster and you can totally see that here :)

    This video is amazing! The bass player is wonderful.

    I saw them both separately this week. Harry Allen with Jim Galloway and Scott Hamilton at Quotes (with CJQ) last night at Quotes on King St. in Toronto.
    Both excellent, but S.H. handles his instrustrument like a love of his life!
    One of the best sax players alive.

    That guy in the black suit is horrifyingly good. Scott Hamilton plays great, but Harry Allen is a friggin' force of nature. You can see how the rest of the guys are digging his playing, Scott included. Granted, Harry Allen looks kinda funny, but he's one of the very best guys out there.

    @Roboviewer Al Cohn actually played with Scott Hamilton and has praised him in interviews as one of his favorite younger players.

  • @bopbrother
    @bopbrother 13 років тому

    I went to Rutgers with him and Ralph Bowen. Harry not only blows his face off, but he even won against me in chocolate milk drinking contests... you'll have to ask him about that... LOL Terrific playing!

  • @saxforth
    @saxforth 12 років тому +4

    Scott is great, but I think if you were to listen to this without watching it, you would hear that Harry Allen is the more proficient of the two. I wouldn't say "better", that's a subjective judgement, but as far as virtuosity, Allen has the distinct advantage. And I think Scott Hamilton would agree with that. Harry Allen is probably the most underrated "name" player out there.

    • @jamesgeng2213
      @jamesgeng2213 4 роки тому

      Yeah i think it’s cause that style of playing is considered “old school” but it’s horrifically hard to do it lmao

    • @guidemeChrist
      @guidemeChrist 2 роки тому +1

      Sure he may or may not have more technical skills. We may never know though because Scott's musicality and lyricism makes it so he'll never need to go the "wow, chops" area. Everything he plays is vocal and memorable. For Harry, most of what he plays is.

    I like the way Harrys hand movements are very minimal. One of the marks of a great player. Both are great players particularly like the sound of that horn harrys got in his hand.

    But you do have to ask...70 years from now, will old
    white guys be trying to imitate David Murray or
    Tupac or some rapper using the same basic lick
    vocabulary mixed up in a blender? I hope not.
    This music is not offensive but it's quite boring.
    At least Zoot Sims had some original licks.
