I experienced 3 migraine aura attacks in a week. The 3rd attack was the scariest bit where my right face was drooping and my right arm felt numb and tingling sensation. I thought Im gonna have a stroke 😢 After rushing to the emergency, they did MRI scan n it came all clear thank god. Scariest experience in my life 😢

I have exactly the same symptoms of "classical" migraine with aura. First comes the aura, then the pain.
Of course, I feel that an aura will develop, so as soon as I get the first symptom I take a painkiller, and then the pain doesn't come, or is moderate. But the pain is better by far compared to the aura. It is literally incapacitating, and it can really ruin my day. Once it happened while I was driving a car, and I was really scared, because there was nowhere I could safely stop. And the only other thing that helps (besides the painkillers) is to go to bed, turn down the blinds, turn off the lamp, close my eyes and rest. But still, I can see the flashes even with my eyes closed in the dark!
    Really awful experience!

The same thing happens to me quite often, i unfortunately had the aura effects happen right before I took a college exam, it was not good to say the least. I feel for everyone who experiences this, the visual aspect is essentially incapacitating. I hope you have found relief from this terrible thing, as for me I’m still searching for something that helps take the edge off pain wise during the migraine portion.

No, it is not like a hangover, but yes, if you abuse with a fake or cheap alcohol, it might hurt as well.
But the pain is preferable to the aura. The aura is really nasty!

I also suffer from exactly this, during my research into it I also have found a combination of things that when done at the right time drastically reduce the pain of the migraine headache. Basically as soon as I think an aura may be coming on I take 2 paracetamol, 2 ibuprofen and drink a coffee. The sooner I do it, the less painful the coming headache is. If this can help someone else, that would be great.

I used to be scared of my zig zags aura.
My migraine starts with a blind slot in front of my eyes and I only have peripheral vision, then come the zig zags.
I know they will pass so what I do now is lay in a dark room and watch the zig zagging. It’s awesome that your body can do this .
The headache after the aura is always unbearable and last for a good few hours. The day after a migraine is like having a hangover.
Luckily I only get these migraines once or twice a year.

I occasionally (about once a month or two) have the aura, no pain. As a former meteorologist I've found that it often happens before the onset of a warm weather front, though dehydration may trigger it too.

I suffer from auras without a migraine. It always starts with the visual one, then there's the numbness and I also experienced speech problems (thankfully just twice). The scariest thing is that I have no idea why it happens, nor do the doctors know. It's scary. Incredibly scary. I have it once a year and the last time I had it was during class. It was a very scary experience. But the scariest one was when I went for a run and I saw this little light in my eyes and I immediately knew what was going to happen. I stopped running and sat on the ground. I was completely alone in a forest, having a blind spot in both of my eyes. I walked home, partially blind - hoping that it goes away quickly.
My first ever aura was when I was 14 years old. That was the first and also the last time I experienced an actual headache after the auras went away. After that, no headaches. Just the visual aura and numbness + 2 times when I also got the speech problem.
Wish it just went away and I didn't have to stress about when it's gonna happen again...

I too suffer from auras with silent migraine, mine started after having a vertebral dissection causing a stroke. My neurologist had me boost my magnesium, add vitamin B2 and also Alpha Lipoic Acid. It’s been two years for me and I’ve learned my triggers. Staying hydrated is important, avoiding nitrates and nitrites in bacon and deli meats and certain lighting changes involving sunlight. Good luck, I hope you find what helps you to avoid them. My first one was similar to stroke symptoms, trip to ER, diagnosed with TIA but not really because it involved both sides of my body. A team of doctors couldn’t diagnose it. Hope this helps anyone looking for something to try.

CELERY JUICE PLEASE READ I hope this comment helps someone. Someone once told me to try celery juice and it may have something to do with the magnesium in it or something but if I juice a whole stalk of celery in a juicer it gives me about a solo cups worth of celery juice and if I drink that as soon as I wake up 3-5 times a week I will not have the aura or headache at all. It’s kinda of hard to keep up with but when I stop doing this I will get the migraines again. I think the juice flushes your system really well and makes sure you’re not nutrient deficient but please try it if you struggle with these. Don’t drink it every day tho or you will have weird side effects like spots on your hands from too much of something in the celery. I did it 7 days a week for a while and it was too much. 3 - 5 is probably good. Just find out what works for you

I have the visual aura for one week straight now. What I see with these eyes are a scintillating fluffy ovals revolving around my focus point. It's more like flashing, strobing ring around it but not a perfect ring shape. So, if I see and focus to a dot, the objects near it are obscured by the aura, but all objects outside of the "ring" is visible. The objects at the outer of the rings is recognizable although not very clear since it is peripheral vision. I still can see things outside of it. To illustrate the visual aura "ring", think of a donut. See through the hollow in the middle of the donut and place it in front of the eyes for about the farthest reach of your hand. The aura I'm experiencing is something like that illustration but without the migraine whatsoever. I'm still trying to find out how to make it disappear but haven't got any solution. I tried resting more, drinking water more, seeing more greeneries, and exercising more but none seems to be the solution for me.

They usually come twice a month in random moments (so e.g. I'm experiencing one now though it's on its finish, and I only woke up and I was working in front of my computer; but also they happened to my while riding a bike or after the gym or during a walk). My neurologist told me to get an MRI scan and so I did. It turns out I have narrowed vertebral artery and some minor changes in my brain. I'm only 28 and I have a perfectly healthy lifestyle. I'm gonna see him later this month, hopefully he can suggest something because it's pretty annoying as during aura I cannot really use my eyes because the things in front of them cover the most of my view.

I get auras and the first time I had one, I believed it was a stroke. I was frightened but because of the setting I was in, I could not do anything about it.
The pain can be in my head or belly. Never both. I get photophobia and nausea. Triptans work for head but for the belly I found that promethazine and rest are better options. If I get a migraine, then most of the day is gone. There is nothing to be gained by trying to carry on. Go to a dark place and let it pass.
I am pleased to see a simplified explanation in here. Much of what people say about migraine is rubbish and clearly they do not understand.
No doctor ever explained to me why or what was happening. This is useful. Thank you

@@RG....... Sorry for the delay. I just noticed the message.
Some years, they can be as infrequent as two a year. Other times, I have had runs where thay could be a few over a couple weeks, or monthly.
      The worst period was 2019-2021.
For my head, early cocodamol during aura 30/500 x 2 and when the pain strikes, 10mg riztriptan.
If I do not have cocodamol, then I will take paracetamol/ibuprofen 1g/400mg combination AND riztriptan.
Later, when I was getting more abdominal migraines with preceeding auras, the cocodamol was ineffective alone. The riztriptan helped a little but never near enough. In the end, I would take pain relief as above then riztriptan with pain; and at the earliest opportunity, 25mg of promethazine. That helps to relax me completely and dulls the sensations. When the acute phase starts diminishing, the drug sends me to sleep. The day is lost, but it was the only way to get through it.
I understood that chronic stress and perhaps, a combination of unhealthy food during stressed times led to increased migraines.
Now, I try to be mindful of health and of quality sleep each night. Irrespective of whatever stress there is, I focus upon my overall health and of having good sleep at night. I do not say this has ended the problem, but I think it has been a contributing factor in dramatically reducing the frequency.

Aura starts and I know it’s going to be a bad day.
Numbness in hands that travel to the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue. Sometimes I even feel it above my knees.
Weak feeling, like I couldn’t open a jar of anything.
I get a form of amnesia too where I can’t remember a specific word. I get confused easily and sound like I have a speech impediment.
The headache starts and it’s deep on one side, and it’s random which side.
The nausea lasts the longest, alongside the headache.
Everything else is just a “phase” of the migraine cycle.
I’ve noticed that magnesium supplements have helped significantly reduce the aura, numbness, severity and duration of a migraine, but I still get nausea that lingers and a milder form of headache.

Hate these, my main trigger is light, could be phone, sunlight, leds, headlights. I think another trigger for me is Aspartame, I've reduced the rate of migraines significantly by cutting "sugar-free" drinks out.
Aura starts in either eye where I start to not be able to see out of an eye in a blur, works its way to the other eye with pain, dizziness then numbness and the dreadful headache.
Sumatriptan definitely helps with the headache for me, but causes extreme numbness to the point I can't walk and potentially sickness. So I refuse to take it, sleep, leaving work missing out on half a days pay.
Need someone to work out how surpress CSDs and Microglia

For me first migraine aura without pain was after having my sons visit over Christmas and we ate Chinese out often, and MSG made me have aura off and on 2 days. Soy can do it and is now being found in many many breads, buns, cereals, grain mixes, prepared foods, restaurants. Nitrates in cured meats, also lunch meats, bright lights, sudden loud noises, etc. I don't have the pain either.

My auras last a few hours so I’ve plenty of time to examine what’s going on. They look like there’s a "pixel" addressing problem in the brain and it sweeps across the visual field correcting as it goes along. The bright edges of the front are the moving areas of conflicting information. The triangle shapes also suggests the brain uses triangular patches for sub images. The triangles are smaller in the centre of the field of vision.

I read it was a de-polarisation of the electrical signals in the brain, but if that's the case, isn't there something that can be done to 'jump-start' or pause that wave via external magnetic or electrical signals? I had one 5 months ago, and I couldn't talk. The symptoms of Vertigo were so bad I couldn't move. I have had them for over 17 years. But this time, it really scared me, because it felt like I couldn't shake it. I thought I was having a stroke. It was awful.. The EMT rushed me to the Hospital. It was all I could do to hold-on in that ambulance. By the time I reached the Hospital, I was starting to fell a little better, but extremely weak. They wheeled me into the Hospital. Once I was set-up in an exam room, I wasn't as despondent. This aura lasted about 30 minutes. I took all the supplements that I normally would take, but it wasn't subsiding. I was so scared if I didn't get something done soon, then it may be tragic next time.
While I was in the Hospital, I began having another aura, but it only lasted about 5 minutes. I was relieved that one went away so quickly. The Doctor on call thought I was making-up the situation, because, by the the time he came-in to examine me - my condition had stabilized. I take Xanax for Panic and Anxiety disorder. Before I went to the Hospital, I took my medicine, along with Magnesium Bisglycinate, R-Alpha Lopoic Acid, and Coq10. I credit these pills for saving me. The Doctor acted like he had never heard of Eye Aura. I knew then that an Eye Aura is serious. It's nothing to play around with. If anyone reading this is having increased auras - with siesure-like episodes, go to a Chiropractor for X-rays. I've been going to the Chiropractor for almost six months, and I've only had 2 light auras - nothing like before. My belief is that an old injury is the result of my Auras. I looked at my X-Ray, and it showed my neck was crooked. I knew this condition had to be the reason for my Auras, Panic Attacks, and severe vertigo. Since my treatments, I have been feeling so much better. I still need my Xanax, but not as much. My Vertigo is almost completely gone. Give it a try.. It's a great option.

Because an aura is a migraine also. So, to say "headache" is to separate it from aura (you may not always get headache pain with aura/occular migraines) and also, "headaches" is the umbrella term. Migraines also do not have to be seering pain. I just had 6 auras 2 nights ago (and 1 prior and 1 today) and expected a horrific headache to come during the migraine attack. But the one that came on was actually low grade pain.

I usually have 2-3 a year and recently got one. Three days later I got two in one day and the next day as well. Is this a concern? Went to the ER and they didnt seem too concerned.

Stay away from foods that have nitrates in them. That's deli meets, hotdogs, bacon etc. Over riped banana, msg, dark chocolate. These are hereditary in my family too. Drink a cup of coffee when you get the auras and before they stop and you should not get the pain.

    • @JahTsir

For my experiences, once the aura starts, I would instantly start drinking an energy drink or a heavy caffeinated drink. The aura would go away way faster and no migraine. The caffeine relaxes the nerves/tension in the back of the head. This worked almost every time when I drank energy drinks. I'm older now and stopped drinking them. That was a mistake, but healthier. Lol

As soon as my aura starts, I lie down and close my eyes. Usually the other pre-migraine symptoms make me drowsy so I tend to fall asleep. After a quick nap, the aura is gone, and I feel way better.

Anyone who gets these type of auras and numbness etc figured out how to cut down down on the number they get per year or a way to stop the whole process or cut it short? For me lately I have been chewing an aspirin and swallowing one advil when I first feel one coming on, and it seems to move the whole process along a little quicker and I don't get the bad headache. I have heard drink more salt magnesium but I do alot of salt anyway and water. I am starting magnesium and celtic salt today and see if I get any changes in the number. I have been keeping records of my migraines since 2019 and I used to have maybe 2 or 3 a year now I have about 20 a year. I started strict keto about 2 years ago it has helped me stay at a great weight and I feel physically fit but has not helped my migraines at all. Mine usually last for 3 hours then they are over but sometimes I get one the very next day. Hopefully someone can figure out something for everyone suffering these awful migraines. I get so tired of hearing someone say yeah I get migraines too when they just get a bad headache. Not even close to these Ocular Migraines.
