i really dislike the people who hated on the session. it was the best!
I was a little late to the party with FPV, heard lots about the Session, but it was already discontinued when I joined. I heard the closest thing was the Runcam 5. Got that little guy a while back for $99 and it's been great since. If you enjoyed the Session, you may also like that. Can't beat the price too! :)

I think GoPro has forgotten what GoPros were supposed to be. They're action cams, made for extreme sports. They're not freakin selfie cameras, that's not what most people use them for, contrary to what you're saying. We have phones for that. And if GoPros get as big, as fragile and as expansive as freaking iPhones, well, I don't see why people would keep using them over smartphones or regular cameras. Like seriously, you can easily find "regular" cameras that are barely bigger than these chonky GoPros...
yeah, and now - one crash, and battery pack smashes this fragile screen... in old days, we threw gopro against wall to see what happens - nothing
GoPro didn't forget. But the people demanded more. You either give the people what they want, or you stick to your original roots and go out of business.
100% agree, phones already have everything needed - and then some - for vloggers and streamers. Its hopeless for gopro to compete with the development pace of phones. Gopro should be building their cameras to be more durable, higher quality, and more versatile. Better low-light performance, more durable, and yea...take one thing from phones...multiple cameras with different lenses. 180, 100, and 50 FoV dang that would be a beast! If Gopro wants to do anything streaming, stream to a screen wirelessly with good range! This would be great for events where the PoV on contestants can be streamed online without a bunch of expensive wireless HD equipment. Also, live streaming quadcopter freestyle and races in HD would be a thing!
GoPro cant please everybody with one camera because the 9 has got a lot of praise for daring to go bigger and put a bigger battery in the camera by other UA-camrs who use the camera for different activities such as MTB and other sports where the size of the camera doesn't matter to a large extent but the capacity of the battery does. The Hero 9 is definitely not suited for fpv and it would be good if they released another improved Session camera.
@@Perceivedshift Low-light performance is not a factor of an action camera. And GoPro already makes the most durable, high quality, versatile action cameras on the market. You can do all kinds of post-processing with GoPro footage that you can't do with that from cellphones or many other lesser action cameras. The combo lens however, is a good idea that I agree with.

The only thing that does not get bigger in gopros, is the sensor.. they are still using the tiny 1/2.3" sensor they started with. I dont get why people use gopros, when there are cheaper better alternatives. Its simply lack of any imagination.
I'm doing a low effort naked-ish Hero 8. *Hero 8 without the battery / battery door / bottom clip is only 84g!*
1 - take off battery door and clip, remove battery
2 - power with cable to 5v regulator
In a year from now, if the hero 10 isn't lighter, I plan to do the same thing with the Hero 9. Have to worry about throwing an SD card in a crash, and I've got no waterproofing, so this isn't for everyone. If you're already considering the naked GoPro trend this is a nice low effort middle route.
Low key, what if because the 9 is so beefy, they will come out with a new version of the session??? We can only hope
I will stay on the Hero7 as long as possible. Great for any kind of FPV freestyle and cinematic footage. And also removable lens cover for ND filters in comparison to the Hero8.
Not good with reel steady go though which sucks. Go pro 6 or 9 - 10 are the best options.
I expect this video to blow up like Drew’s video on the Hero 7 Silver listing it’s disadvantages

I know this video is 11 months old but still hoping this is seen. As someone that’s recently gotten into fpv and has a 3” cinewhoop, what would be a good suggestion? I know the Hero 10 came out but you’re looking at $400 minimum. It’s not beyond my price point but can’t help but think since I’m new, I’ll be crashing therefore creating more risk of damaging the camera. That’s my thoughts at this point but I also want good quality. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm surprised you lot from the fpv community haven't got together and found a company that can make you a GoPro camera Pacific for your needs and then sell it to the fpv community like the session GoPro you sell drones, parts and t-shirts but you don't sell a camera 📷 after all the camera is the most important part of your whole operation because if it wasn't for cameras you wouldn't be on UA-cam. This video makes me feel so validated. I got a cheap gopro4 clone and the criticism of 4k @30fps is nearly about the same faults my cam has.
Sharpness is too high and UA-cam is doing strange compression... Motion blur also seems to be reduced... mhm I dont like the gopro 9 so far ...

Because I really want to have a very good quality of camera just last Monday, I went to the trusted shop here in Hongkong but I'm not satisfied because i tried to record a video at home just to try it first but I'm so disappointed because the camera is burning hot after 30 minutes of recording a video. Can u tell me what's wrong with it?
Great vid! There’s a lot to be said about firmware and software improvements on the 9 over time. Hopefully since the body is bigger, processing speed is a lil faster, maybe they can squeeze a 4k 4:3 60fps and maybe some other features to appease the fpv enthusiasts.
You can ditch the battery and connect the balance cable of your lipo directly to the usb-C connection of the hero 9. Makes it lighter than the hero 8!
I'm with you. I'm still flying the 6 and 7 because of the screw on lens protectors, and they fit in the same protectors and mounts. I smash the lens protectors and screw-on ND filters about three times as often as I break a GoPro. I figure that means I'd be replacing a GoPro 8 or 9 three times as often, and that'd be a bummer, right?!
I wish someone told me just how bent, chipped, and mangled my props can get and still look buttery smooth with Hypersmooth. I would have upgraded to a 7 way sooner, and the money I saved in props would have paid for the upgrade two or three times over!
I still miss the Session. Maybe we'll luck out. Maybe with GoPro's new camera being so tubby and massive, and with competition coming in from the (much) smaller side with things like the Insta360 Go, maybe we'll get something like a Session from GoPro with Hypersmooth and proper ReelSteady Go support. Maybe? Maybe?!
I'm not holding my breath, but the possibility of GoPro releasing a smaller camera is getting more much likely.
I‘ve newly a 3“ race quad and a session 5 and it fits on there perfecly but im so bad at the moment, but with lots of training ill hopefully get really nice shots :)
GoPro are quite happy to use our footage in their trailers but won’t make us a camera! At least DJI are onboard with FPV

Despite the weight and the delicate screen up front that it sucks a bit, it's bombastic!
This Gopro is a very good camera. But so is a good DSLR. The 7 is still the best for 5 inch quads. 2.7k super view is stunning. Still a lot of quality and 50g lighter. Cheaper, lighter, gets the job done.
run no battery, run the aftermarket door with the exposed usb c connector and run the connector that allows a usb c to balancing port connection.
The worst part is that they removed protune from the GoPro App so if you have a GoPro session 5 you cant change settings!!!

I saw an add for gopro's max lens mod. Looks like a fish eye lens. I'd be curious to see some crazy wide fov freestyle. Might also allow the use of hypersmooth boost without excessive cropping

Hmm.. Looking at the 9 for a motorcycle vlog camera. Maybe not for freestyle flying (hate me if you want, but I still have 2 Session 5s in the box), but the advanced Hypersmooth could be very good for sport bike twisties/track day footage.
Great vid Dribbo but why would you not mention that you can remove the battery and power it from the fc? You can even buy a premade wire harness for it...
Make sure you do this video again once you have the “Max lens mod” for the Hero 9. 👌🏼 I’m in a similar boat as you. I use gopros for aviation shoots mounted to airplanes. The smaller and wider angle and the less screens the better for me. Let’s hope that the Max lens helps!

The perfect one for fpv is GoPro Session 5.2 with HyperSmooth and Replaceable battery, sadly ... it only a dream.

I really never understood why GOPRO would cancel a patented formfactor in the first place. They need to revamp the session and add all the goodies via software. I remember the first time I saw a session on a helmet I was amazed. The new GOPRO cams look like any other chinese cam and I would think twice, to mount one on my head or quad.

GoPro needs to realize that FPV pilots are close to 2% of the entire nation. that may not sound like much until they think of how much profit they could make from 600 million GoPro Sessions.

Personally I can't justify the cost of a GoPro since my videos don't get enough views to feel like it's worth the price & risk of breaking one during a crash, especially since we don't have the same warranty in the UK that you can get in the US (that Bestbuy one where you pay a one-off fee for a replacement unit), so I'm still using my old Xiaomi Yi's.
I swapped to Insta360 one r, because I had 3 GoPros (7, 7, 8) wich broke without a cause, they just stopped working, the last one was beeping steady for no reason and the displays didn’t turn on at all. For me it is over. But it was nice when working
Get a mount for your rc car and use horizon level mode on that.
Lost another Session 5 in a crash yesterday. Went looking for another on eBay and realized the price had doubled from a year ago. They're becoming scarce and there is no good replacement. All the knockoffs suck in comparison.

I think GoPro has been intentionally making their action cams bigger and the lens non-replaceable because of us drone pilots. They're probably sick and tired of honoring all of the Best Buy warranty exchanges that come in all of the time, too many losses for them to incur over a great length of time.
Lots of mid throttle oscillations but the funny part is that it’s a good hypersmooth test lol
I bought a box of about 40 session 5s last year for like $100 lol. Most of them just worked or needed a new lens, so I sold the majority of them and left myself with ten. Hopefully that'll last me till there's something fpv friendly again.

Great vid Drew. But you forgot to mention the max lens mod for the 9, allowing you to use the higher stabilization mode with a wider FOV.

Stupid question: Is the stabilization in the Gopro hardcoded (so you get a stabilized, cropped video file) or is it done in software (e.g. in 2 files: 1 is the original footage, 2 is what corrections to apply when and you render the file in some gopro program)? At least as an option? My guess is, that it's the former(?) In that case you lose the ability to correct your shot afterwards or reduce and adjust the cropping?

Its a shame GoPro abandoned your Session, but in the highly competitive action camera business volume is key. On the other hand, you could invest in a bit bigger quad-copter to handle the extra ounce of weight. Anyway, that spinning gave me vertigo so that marked my outpoint.

Bubby's buddies made a big deal about him using Hypersmooth. I told them it doesn't matter. If you want to use it.. Go ahead. I prefer to just fly as smoothly as possible and tune to improve the smooth before flying.
Either way, I don't see it as cheating. It's preferences like that and racers that use auto level. Whatever flys your kwad.
Question about one thing. Why is the video so grainy? Great video btw. It’s just the grain that I see is what bothers me the most.
I swapped my TPU mounts on the hero8 for the roll cage from GoPro that has the removeavke lens protector too. It offers the same amount of protection without gaining more weight. Then I just use a variable mount and bolt it it the rig.
How u connect gopro cam with fpv goggle? I dont see any wire connect between drone to gopro,

AKtoTok looked at some reviews , action cam looks decent the 360 will help with the B Roll 😃 don’t look as strong as the GoPro however you can replace parts more easy 👍🏻

Hopefully the max lens mod won’t take forever to come out like the 8 media mod. It’s my understanding that the max lens mod increases the field of view to 155 degrees and keeps the horizon level no matter the orientation of the camera. Good bye reelsteady in that aspect. If you get to test that please do a video.

I could use a Session 9 on my boat. They had something good going that they threw in the trash.
I dig the image quality, stability, and all that, but form factor and weight makes it a hard pass for me. Maybe once I get a stronger and more capable quad, I'll consider it.
Might as well design a tpu mount for your vlogging camera.
How much does your quad weigh? With batteries and a GoPro?

I could be wrong, but I think that early in the video you said the 9 did not crop hypersmooth, then later on you said it does.
I think I may have gotten the superview and hypersmooth info mixed up.... my bad
There's about 5 dollar difference here in my country, between paying for a GoPro 9 or a HD1 USA built. Every new generation of GoPros it gets less likely that i will buy one.
I don't really like the hypersmooth. It's become better since the earliest revisions, but it still is sometimes jarring when it messes up...
