    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    After scolding Tom (Matt Damon) for being boring and pretending to be someone else, Tom attacks and eventually murders Dickie (Jude Law).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    After the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Minghella attempted another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented Mr. Ripley, which features heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a psychopathic bisexual murderer. Tom Ripley (Damon) is a bright and charismatic sociopath who makes his way in mid-'50s New York City as a men's room attendant and sometimes pianist, though his real skill is in impersonating other people, forging handwriting, and running second-rate scams. After being mistaken for a Princeton student, Tom meets the shipping tycoon father of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), who has traveled to the coast of Italy, where he's living a carefree life with his father's money and his beautiful girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Dickie's father will pay Ripley 1,000 dollars plus his expenses if he can persuade Dickie to return to America. As Ripley and Dickie become friends, Tom finds himself both attracted to Dickie and envious of his life of pleasure. In time, he decides that he would rather be Dickie Greenleaf than Tom Ripley, so rather than go back to his life of poverty, Ripley impulsively murders Dickie and assumes his identity. The Talented Mr. Ripley was based on the first of a series of novels featuring Tom Ripley written by Patricia Highsmith; the story was previously filmed in 1960 as Purple Noon, with Alain Delon as Ripley.

    it's so eerie how Tom cuddled
    with Dickie's bleeding dead body on the boat after that, and what makes it even more interesting was that it wasn't in a sexual way but more like a frightened child nestling up to his mother. this movie was beautiful it didn't just portray sociopathy in that single direction modern Hollywood way, there were twists and turns so painfully accurate and you just couldn't hate Tom

      @alanverdi9430 6 років тому

      Tom si era invaghito di Dickie nel film questo è indubbio. Se Dickie non lo avesse respinto dicendo che non lo amava la storia poteva prendere una svolta positiva.Dopo averlo ucciso riesce a mettere in atto ciò che non aveva potuto fare quando era vivo e cioè abbracciarlo , accarezzarlo, stringerlo a sè e forse baciarlo.

      Wait who's the sociopath, tom or dickie?

    • @SK-vk3jp
      @SK-vk3jp 4 роки тому +13

      The book is even better that way. They don’t fight. He doesn’t cuddle him. The murder is no accident. Ripley planned it beforehand, it is the very reason he got Dickie into the boat, so he can dispose of the body. AND still... you can’t hate Ripley. The way he is written is that good! I understand that in the movie, they cannot really give him an entire inner monologue, so they made him likeable in another way.

      @Henz Vlog. Tv
      As I read the book beforehand, I naturally cannot (or at least struggle) to separate the character of Ripley(book) and Ripley(movie). There will always be a trace of Ripley(book) when I watch the movie, and consequently, when rereading the book, I suppose I would put a bit of Ripley(movie) into the character of Ripley(book).
      In short, I do not have a non-prejudiced view of the character in the movie.
      I can tell you, however, why the character appeals to audiences even though they wouldn’t trust, or at least befriend, a character as Ripley in real life.
      It is true that he is a murderer. For that fact alone we should despise him, but Highsmith(creator of the character) did a very good job on his initial motivation, and succeeded in making him sympathetic in the same way (for lack of a better example) one might feel sympathetic towards a child or adolescent that lashes out towards the world. Of course, nor the book nor the movie condones murder, I want to make that very clear.
      You might compare it to rooting for the Underwoods in House Of Cards, a character on Game Of Thrones, the members of a criminal motorclub in Sons Of Anarchy, Walter White in Breaking Bad, or simply any other initially bad character that audiences might sympathise or root for.
      I cannot ‘hate’ them, because I enjoy watching them. I enjoy watching the world through the character’s eyes, enjoy watching them go about their lives in their fictional worlds.

    Damon's performance is amazing partially because he brings some humanity to the character. His Ripley is clearly amoral, but you feel much more like he's a victim of circumstance. In the novels Ripley elicits no sympathy, and yet his character is somehow very likable. Patricia Highsmith's great talent was in making the monstrous somehow beautiful. Anyway, read the books, guys. Good stories.

      On the contrary damon seems to be a well adjusted confident person bordering on arrogance and self righteousness whereas Tom R...is tortured, had a majooj indentity disorder and is abi sexual meaning that his emotional needs and to great attachment lead him to fall in love with Dickie not because he is a man but because he incarnates the type of confidence Tom craves for not realizing that behing Dickie's charisma lies a selfish superficial and quite unsympathetic character.

      But Tom only Said those things cause dickie didnt want to leave Marge for him and move in together,which is completely psychotic. The -you love ME,youre not marrying me makes me ring and squirm everytime.. Concidering how disingenious and fake tom is,he shouldnt criticize dickie...and he dont know him that well,being a clingy mooch handing out spiteful lifelessons. Dickie accepted him much longer than any human would and dickie bitchslapping him is the films highlight. Much better scene than in the Book.

    I love this scene because I think that as soon as Tom hit Dickie and he started bleeding Dickie was already dead he was going to bleed out, and Tom genuinely didn’t want to kill Dickie but because Dickie was going of pure he thought in this moment it’s kill or be killed, and at that point it was a survival of the fittest one of them had to die in that boat, you get what I’m saying right?

      The movie is amazing, but Jude Law absolutely hit it out of the park with this role. So charismatic in every scene he appeared in.
      The filmmakers spent the first half of the movie making the audience (and Tom) fall in love with Dickie, despite his obvious narcissism and complete disregard for the feelings of those around him. There were numerous hints that Dickie had a dark side to him, but (much like Marge and Tom) we mostly ignored this because he was so likeable.
      Then when Dickie died, the film took on a much darker tone and the focus was on how long could Tom get away with his dual identities. The sudden tone change was obviously jarring for some, but I think that was the whole point. It reflected how Tom's view of Dickie was completely altered in one scene and how his actions threw his life into chaos.

    This scene is so damn goooood....til the violence kicks in. Yareds score is amazing,you can see Dickie go fom annoyed to bewildered to pissed off and just explode....SO FAR it´s so superior to the book. But they should´ve have made the change from solely wanting to kill Dickie n take his identity,to him killing Dickie when his love and advances are harshly rejected here. Meaning=The ACCIDENTAL murder part just comes of as silly here. Tom rips the oar from its holding and slices Dickies face in about 0.4 seconds??....making it an accident,Tom even wanting to take him to the hospital....and later at the hotel when he checks in,he randomly says he´s Dickie Greenleaf when asked,the opportunity is by chance. And also,how he is so omnipotent is just silly."Please Dickie,stop!"=Don´t make me kill you. He killed someone he didnt wanna kill easily but who wanted to kill him. Come on. the murder comes off as self-defense and just like Tony vs. Ralph in the sopranos,the protagonist gets through a minute long fight without even getting a bruise,cuz you know....for the plot to be able to exist. Minghella overreached here when wanting to make Ripley likable. And though Dickie isn´t lovable,his minor suspicions(which he ignore cuz of his narcissism)are valid n he didnt deserve to die. Minghella could´ve combined his own idea with Highsmiths novel but he went overboard.

      @Qwerty123 It's not just the accuracy. Damon's Ripley is _always_ too creepy and too overtly mysterious. Even when he's being the charming guy. Even Peter and Cate Blanchett's character seemed attracted to this creepiness.
      Compare this to Alen's version: Alen's Ripely is constantly changing persona: The weird creep and the cheerful guy. Alen showed his amazing range while playing this character. He actually transforms into someone else.

      Dickie was just human but he did appreciate the Faker Mr. Ripley because he was in Italy for beating up a kid for making him angry yet he held back from punching Ripley in the face, notice those little slaps are nothing compared and how he holds back from beating Ripley to death, Thomas Ripley is such a huge fake and worried about all the little stupid things that Dickie didn't even pay attention to, Freddie saw what a big fake Ripley was unfortunately Dickie did too but it was too late for him.

      Dickie was just a sociopath of another kind or a narcissist his own self. They don't all act alike according to that book called The Sociopath Next Door. He himself is really has his head up his own behind with his own superiority complex, lying and cheating on his girlfriend/fiancée, when his Italian chick on the side died he's their blaming Italy's emergency services and everyone else except himself when he knows she killed herself because she was pregnant. His death didn't really unsettle me it's just that Ripley is just as crazy.

    I'm sorry if I were Dickie I wouldn't have talked to Tom on The Boat. I would have asked Marge to give us some privacy and talk to Tom and tell him that he's overstayed his welcome, he knew that he lied about Princeton, and that he's going to tell his Father and he has to be reimbursed.

    Well in Swiss law he would 1) be exempted from guilt in regards to manslaughter (murder would not even be considered because there was no premeditation nor other aggravating circumstances) providing it could be established that the initial head wound did not cause Dickie's death 2) he would be condemned for bodily harm (grievous or non according to wound) for the first blow 3) he would be able to plead legitimate defense for the counter attack but would be condemned for an 'excess of....

    According to the book “The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside ‘The Room’, The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made” by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell, Greg watched this movie and realized that Tommy Wiseau was just like Tom Ripley - but when Tommy watched it, he was inspired to write the script for The Room, even naming the best friend after Matt Damon (which he misheard as “Mark Damon”)

    to a mental institution but given the 'method in his madness' as depicted in the film he would probably be considered to have been suffering from a personality disorder which is not usually grounds for pleading insanity (and if we place ourselves in the historical context certainly not). In the book Tom decides to murder Dickie before going out in the boat...then it would be first degree murder...complicated indeed...his lawyer might claim a 'crime of passion' under Italian law which would get..

    I haven't read the book to know what liberties the film took with the plot or the characters. I was frightened from the the toe curling meeting on the beach onwards. Without benefit of knowing the book, it was so clear this wasn't going to end well. I thought Jude Law and Matt Damon were well cast. Utterly believable. A very frightening film.

    You are welcome..I too am fascinated by this movie as you can probably tell. Back at the time the film was depicted to have taken place the laws were quite different from today; especially concerning pleading diminished responsibility because of some mental condition. The film is excellent because it is not a black and white story line. Dickie is both charismatic and fun and, at time, very selfish and exploitative (with the pregnant Italian girl). Tom starts off sincere and well intentioned but

    Complex legal analysis; Tom is not in a state of legitimate defense when he first strikes Dickie with the oar but then when Dickie counter attacks he is and would be excused for trying to stop the attack especially as he shouts "stop" to Dickie who says that he is going to kill Tom but the final several blows are an excess of proportionality. He could plead legitimate defense but would be condemned for having exceeded what they law allowed him in defense. This case could be taught at law school

    I thbink most did. Thats the art of a great trailer. Just like A Room For Romeo Brass. looks like a light hearted romp and is a dark thriller. How realistic was that scene with the oar?!? That is exactly how it would be, a little trickle and then you see just how severe it really was. He would not have been so handsome for Marge after that!

This film was Jude Law’s calling card he was nominated for an oscar. He was brilliantly cast as spoilt Dickie Greenleaf.
