    I assumed when he set up the boat as being wrecked on rocks it was so they could find Dickies body, but not rule it murder. Now it just seems a strange detail though, why not just dump the body overboard and abandon the rowing boat? the voice over even says Dickie's body is on the boat when he scuttles it. To then steal bro's identity when his corpse may be identified just seems unnecessarily risky.

Everyone that James Rebhorn worked with would win Oscars. Marisa Tomei, Julianne Moore, Al Pacino, Cate Blanchett. In The Book version his parents died in the Hudson River who would later be raised by his Aunt who was a bully. They had a young man who was a college student who was a Boarder and Tom would get him to talk about his College Life and deluded himself that "he" went to College. In The DVD Section, you see how lonely his life is without any Family or any real Friends.

      I did not care very much for Purple Noon (although Alain Delon is a great actor), in my eyes the film deviates too much from the book. The American Friend, an adaptation of Ripley's Game with Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz has also some changes (primarily names, locations, nationalities, but also changes some aspects of Ripley's personality, as does the newer adaptation with John Malcovich, who is clearly too old too play a 30-year-old Ripley (still good film). Barry Pepper does a good job in "Ripley Under Ground" and comes quite close. Still, that makes 5 Ripley movies with 5 different actors for the title role. Also the whole continuity of the books is left out over these movies, a pity. Still enjoyable, though.

    Schools should have psychology as a compulsory subject. Everyone needs to know more about psychology, mental health and early symptoms of mental illnesses so everyone can differentiate and choose the right friends. Narcissistic Sociopaths and Psychopaths deserves to be alienated or even be expelled from further learning. Now that I know the damage these individuals are capable of I can clearly say that I have mostly seen narcissism in people I have been betrayed by since teenage years! It's something one is born with, it doesn't just develop later on in life when they're adults. One is *born* a narcissist and they should not be taught academic skills to make them even more capable of doing harm. These individuals use *anything* and *everything* against another individual, for example doctors use their knowledge to humiliate their victims in the long run only because they can! I know so many Psychopaths that use their academic background to abuse others, it's very unfair. Narcissists make the most out of every resource that's provided to them, or even *not* provided to them. They feel obligated to misuse their resources! If not given they go out of their way to steal things and use lies. They don't just randomly go around murdering people! Police think one needs to be a murderer in order to be diagnosed LOL it's so stupid.

      I agree with your writing.
      My ex is a sociopath and does whatever she wants.
      Whatever, she, wants.
      And like Ripley in the movie, she doesn't get caught and instead gets rewarded!
      (Btw the one thing I hated about the ending was nobody had to die. He could have just told either the blonde lady or his bf the truth, and then whoever he choose would have kept their mouth shut. Then by the end of the voyage everything would have been fine.)
      But I agree, psychopaths and narcissists should be alienated from society or at the very least learned about in school.
      Sadly, I believe such a thing will not be possible for another 1,000 years of human civilization. Long, long, long after both me and you are gone.
      All I suggest now to others is read, read, read (such as "the sociopath next door" or "without conscience") and be careful of your social circle. That and go "no contact" if you have to.

      he certainly did no such thing. The last scene where he sits on his bed and the dying breaths of Peter are heard are just a voice in his head, an echo of what he had done before.

      I don't know if he's a sociopath or not, by medical standards (sociopath's outdated anyway) but just from this recap alone, all the lying, manipulating, the commitment to imitating others (behaviours, signatures) to serve himself some time in the future, his willingness to maintain the lie by any means necessary...it might not be too far- fetched tbh.

      @@oskarprotzer3000 I just said it might not be too far off. Never said that he was for sure. In any case I can't diagnose anyone because I'm not a psychiatrist but also because this is just a recap. Also sociopaths don't find it difficult to understand people's emotions. They just don't give af about said emotions.

    I love this movie too, it's so fascinating. I've read the book by Patricia Highsmith; books always go into more detail than a movie can show. I got such a psychological insight into Tom Ripley. You get a clue into how these types think, feel and operate. I am confused about the homosexuality part. Tom already intended to steal Dickeys identity and kill him. I didn't' understand how the homosexuality came into the picture and murdering others.

    • @Dragon_Pierce
      @Dragon_Pierce Рік тому +1

      The book is in this aspect more subtle and dubious and more a desire to become Dickie instead of becoming his lover, I think, especially as the sequel books (Ripley Under Ground, Ripley's Game, The Boy who followed Ripley, Ripley Under Water) do not portray him as very interested in sex (he is married to the daughter of a wealthy factory owner and although they care a lot for each other, there is never a wish to procreate)

    • @dhawkins78412
      @dhawkins78412 Рік тому

      @@Dragon_Pierce i agree. Ms Highsmith depicted him as more interested in being somebody over sexuality. He is greedy. It’s so psychological. I tend to favor Freud, where sexuality is the inner force to behavior. To me she made it a bit confusing. I’d say his sex drive was transformed into greed and stealing others identity. A deep insecurity. So although he’s dangerous he really has no identity. He wants what others possess which are shallow ways of behaving. Anyway it’s so fascinating. Yes I read he did get married but he had issues with having sex almost as though he was repulsed. I don’t think there’s much mention of children. He is a child. I’ve not read the other books yet. I get sidetracked.
