  • You're watching the official music video for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - "Teach Your Children" written by Graham Nash. Originally released on the 1970 CSNY studio album "Deja Vu", "Teach Your Children" is featured on a 2018 Graham Nash career retrospective entitled "Over The Years..." Get a copy here
The video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher.
The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960's, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash's relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well.
“I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting." - Graham Nash (2018)

I found out recently that this is my grandfather's favorite song. He doesn't listen to CSNY, or any bands like that, as he is a bit older than most that do. He's a Republican, and I'm a liberal, so we don't always see eye to eye but I've always loved this song, and finding out he does as well gives us something to bond over. Thank you CSNY, for allowing me to connect with my grandfather

I grew up listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash and young. I am honored to say I David Crosby preform 3 different times in different stages of my life. I am 69 now and at the red rocks amphitheater in Colorado on a beautiful fall night, David stepped to the front of the stage while Stills was playing his solo part of a song. He stood there overlooking the crowd like a proud approving elder, his long beautiful freak flag of hair still blowing in the wind and his stern mustached smile beaming out at us! I remember thinking to myself - thank you David - thank God for you and the guys! What an era of music and struggles! An entire generation loves you and there he stood like master of us all gladly following his storied life. I am truly grateful and sadden on this day. Thanks for the memories! You tried to change the world. Someday the world will listen and change for the betterment of mankind. May it be tomorrow. Goodbye David Crosby - fare thee well.

    "Teach Your Children"
You, who are on the road,
    Must have a code
    That you can live by.
    And so become yourself
Because the past is just a goodbye.
    Teach your children well.
    Their father's hell
    Did slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams.
The one they pick's the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them, "Why?"
If they told you, you would cry.
So, just look at them and sigh,
    And know they love you.
    [Verse in the background:]
Can you hear and do you care
    And can't you see
    We must be free
    To teach your children
    What you believe in,
Make a world that we can live in?
    And you, of tender years,
    Can't know the fears
    That your elders grew by.
And so please help them with your youth.
    They seek the truth
    Before they can die.
    Teach your parents well.
    Their children's hell
    Will slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams.
The one they pick's the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them, "Why?"
If they told you, you would cry.
So, just look at them and sigh
    And know they love you.

God speaks to me in various ways. Sometimes it's audible and that's when I need specific information or instructions. Sometimes He asks ME questions, and sometimes He brings a song repeatedly to me. This is the song. The words "And know they love you" is what has struck me in the heart. I think both my grandson (who I say I am raising, but he is really raising me!) and I need to be reminded that we actually love each other. I am teaching him to walk in my footsteps by example, not just words. BUT I am also teaching him (audibly) to NOT walk in my footsteps in all the areas where I tripped and fell. He's listening.

At 1:48 Black Lives Matter is presented. Are you familiar with this organization? They spent last summer burning and looting our cities, destroying SMALL BUSINESSES, many of them BLACK-OWNED. They preach that white folks are incurably racist-- evil. They DESTROY THE MESSAGE OF DR. KING. Their lies are now the official curriculum in our public schools. They are the OPPOSITE of what I taught my kids: namely TOLERANCE FOR ALL. The video is racist propaganda. BTW, Trump, who is demonized here at 2:00, ELEVATED Blacks, who enjoyed a higher standard of living under his leadership. More black-owned businesses. --Tim

There isn't a central leadership with any specific goals, let alone the nefarious ones that you alleged. If you want to use the genetic fallacy to condemn the movement based upon the ideologies of some of the founders, then why not do the same to the U.S. and virtually all of its institutions based upon the racism, sexism, classism, etc. of the Founding Fathers and most of the influential people from the subsequent 200 years?

My ten year older brother bought Déjà Vu right when it came out in The Netherlands in March 1970. As a ten year old I heard him play this album ad infinitum and thus it became my wayfarer for the past 53 years. But only now that my 21 and 20 year old daughters have left the house to go study across the ocean, after gaining adulthood in the universally known painful process of attaining their independence from us, do I not only understand, but also undergo the full force of this Song of Songs. The unbroken circle of life as described in Genesis with first Eve then Adam attaining consciousness, realizing their mortality and self-conscious of their nakedness they flee home to fend for themselves, leaving their bewildered father behind who gave them said consciousness and self-determination. No original sin there, just leaving home, just empty nest…

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
    And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye.
    Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh
    And know they love you.
    And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
    Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

We were a very nonconforming group. But we were looking for something. A way to stop all the racism and hate. A way to stop the war. We tried so hard to get people to stop treating each other so badly. 1967 became the summer of love. After a few years, the moment was over, we had missed our chance to change things permanently.
