That's hilarious that it turned out that way, but at same so cool that they could turn that family dynamic into something positive, when I've _known_ people to get miserable over far less. May they find success in their respective careers doing talk-shows.
An old Chinese dude born in China, who immigrated to the US, has a son who is a comedian and he has no idea what a comedy career means, but he decides he wants to play too, starts acting, finds one-in-a-million success, strikes gold and becomes an international figure because he just went for it? Hopefully they left their old Chinese ideals and its ideologies back home, and adopted America wholly in its spirit. Because some Chinese Americans have been found to backstab America and return to China with stolen information and act treasonous as a whole.
This proves his Dad is proud of him. If he thought it was a waste of time he wouldn’t be doing it. In fact, he proved to his Dad he should be doing something different than what he was doing. Jimmy definitely “won” over the top.
It's not pride it's ego. It's bullshit that a father's form of "pride" is to downplay and demean his son's accomplishments. And I feel it shows on Jimmy's face that it still effects him, even if he has accepted it.
I won't lie, got a bit pissed reading this comment. Where was his dad then before he "made it"? Only put-downs, even when he's on CBS, and even when his father accepted that he "made it", he downplayed his son's struggle by saying "You did it, I must be able to, because it must've been EASY.", then proceeds to ride off his son's connections and existing reputation. And since older Asians are whole less-than-likely to be in the acting sphere because of the you must be 1. Doctor 2. Lawyer 3. Engineer or 4. Disgrace to family thing, there are probably shortage of older Chinese actors with a decent amount of confidence in Hollywood with a genuine authentic accent and that's an advantage to casting. Then becomes entitled and thinks suddenly he somehow can have theatre gigs with 500 people. All's well ends well, but his father wasn't a good supporter of his own son, but the first to be "proud" and capitalize on his son's success. You all laugh, but there's more pain in this than meets the eye. Even if Jimmy denies it, this is the reality of how a lot of Asian kids are treated by their parents.
