Good reaction. 'Karate' was the lead single for their second album (2016). It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this because as a Japanese martial art it reflects their culture - that was a very important thing for them as well. As with a lot of their songs it is also about always moving forwards. The figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that). They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible (but they are not martial artists). Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time .... and she let it go. We all know Moa wouldn't hurt a fly. This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards". As in the comments below, you will not know just how good BABYMETAL are until you see and hear them live. The official videos are all very good of course (and this is one of the best), but they are first and foremost a live performance act. I will second Ganimal83's suggestion for Road of Resistance official live in Japan for your next reaction.
Great composition by Yuyoyuppe who also wrote Rondo of Nightmare, From Dusk Till Dawn, GJ!, Kagerou, Monochrome and Believing. He also arranged some more Babymetal songs.
Great reaction, Karate is an amazing song on finding courage to overcome challenges to move toward your goals. Very much Babymetal’s early path, as they were criticized quite a bit early on by gatekeepers/elitists of the genre. Also, you need to watch their live videos. They are by design, a live performance band. Not watching them live is like eating a PB&J sandwich w/o the PB or the J. Next suggestion -> *Road of Resistance (Official Live)* 🤘🦊
_Ossu!_ 🦊🤘🥋 Interesting and cool way to edit this reaction, belated welcome to BM journey. I was blessed by the Fox God enjoying this song live three times during South American Tour (going for the fourth next time in Chile) and it's just a kickass song and becomes even more beautiful with SuMetal interlude singing along with the crowd. Definitely an experience. Also during latest solo shows they've been playing this song as part of the encore and along with Monochrome in the same setlist which was composed by the same guy (YuppeMetal), it is really a must have experience. See you next time 🦊🤘🔥
What always fascinates me is how good of a blend of genres Karate is. You can look at this as a Metal song or as a Pop song, and in both respects it's equally great.
Karate is definitely up on the list for Babymetal for me, though really, there's not one song of theirs that I would want to put on the bottom of a list. As has already been mentioned, definitely need to see an actual live performance of theirs to get the whole experience and to see them at their best. And as it's already been suggested I'm going to add another tally to your first live experience of them being Road of Resistance Live in Japan.
Great mv, and it is even better live because so many times that brings in the Su element and crowd reaction to the song . 2016 Download UK is a great example . I prefer Su singing in Japanese it is so beautiful. Not that i dont enjoy her singing in English . If you watch the subtitles, her voice is so crystal clear that you can hear and see which word she is actually singing . She has always amazed me with her vocals 😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼
If you are going to just react to Official MV's with studio audio rather than HQ Pro Shots of LIVE performances with actual LIVE audio, Kami Band instrumentals and actual crowd response then you are never going to get the full impact of who BABYMETAL are. Megitsune LIVE at PIA Arena 2023 HQ Pro Shots from For The Fox God channel.
Good reaction - but you seriously need to see them LIVE (not "official") - it's what they do - the music comes to life and there's just SO much more to it - and it definitely hits a LOT harder. Their voices I think definitely sound better in Japanese too and it feels somehow more immersive - for me I'm fine with short snatches of English...but nothing extended really - it's not native, is structured differently and while they do well it's just not the same. But I'd still watch anything BM pretty much :D
Live perfomances are better than OMV. O.k. IINE is only exception 🙂 Legendary: -KARATE (live UK Download 2016). -IJIME,DAME,ZETTAI - Live at Sonisphere 2014 (UK (OFFICIAL) 🦊🤘
Nice reaction. Yes, I´m all for "BABYMETAL, please sing Japanese!", too. I can´t stand the "hey, they´re finally singing in English!" thing anymore. They´re frikkin´Japanese, for gods sake! 😉Japanese sounds so good! But one thing: I think you don´t do "Ratatata" any justice with rating it in the upper middle. Technically, it is on par with many of the best pure BABYMETAL songs. You might have to listen to it some more to recognize that. Especially if you listen to the drummer 😉 The "Karate" MV is a masterpiece, as is the song itself. Nonetheless, I second all the comments here, calling for "do live!". You haven´t experienced them in their full glory, if you don´t see/hear them live! And I second Ganimal´s recommendation - Road Of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL) too!
"hey, they´re finally singing in English!" I mean this is kind of stupid considering that ever since their first album they have had some lyrics in English. And from second album onwards they have had entire songs in english. So it's certainly nothing new:D
I love Babymetal , revue IJIMME DAME ZETTAI by BABYMETAL Sonisphere 2014 festival uk, this was the day they broke the west! 3 young ladies from Japan with a metal band put on the main stage last minute and they smashed it!
Nice reaction. When Yui and Moa start off I thought ok they're going to have some fun with this like Give Me Chocolate. And then Su starts to sing and everything changes. It breaks through the music and bring it up to a new level. Doesn't matter if you're fighting outside forces or your own inner demons Karate is a song for you. Feeling down and out. Broke and bleeding on the floor. Get up and go forward because that's all we can do in life. And you don't have to go through it alone. Just like in the video friends or family can help you up. And as Babymetal put it themselves They will always be on your side. Fighting the good fight. All these years later and this song still holds up. Many Babymetal fans will talk about how Babymetal got them through some dark times in their lives. This is one of those songs that helped them. Securing Babymetal as an international treasure. Thanks, Japan. The Foxhole is deep and full of surprises
I prefer when they sing in japanese. I think it is because japanese does not have dipthongs, only pure vowels. This matches su-metals pure voice, with no vibrato . If you want bueatiful vocals and metal , monochrome live or from dusk to dawn. Want metal rap try BMC legend mm Babymetal is always best live.
Their Drummer and guitarists have to work based on clicktracks, since they allways have Backing Tracks in the Background. The dancing is nearly complete clicktrack controlled as well as su's singing.
Loved this reaction, thank you! look forward to more, you are going to have so much fun exploring all Babymetal has to offer, if I can suggest try their live performances - shockingly excellent. re: drumming. thousands of hours on a practice pad to master technique, timing, fundamentals, control. eventually every skilled technique is so ingrained they are as natural as breathing, and combine quite nicely into either sheet / scripted music or free style. That is the start at least, and i'm sure some talented individuals do not need to go this route exactly, but for those who have to work at it that is the work.
Very cool!!! Whenever you can, try checking out Babymetal's live performance videos. The clips are great, but an essential component is missing for this band: the fans. Babymetal is always better live. Enjoy Babymetal!!! 🤘🦊🤘
Nice reaction with some work. Like your approach to show the lyrics. The first productions have her own charme. The studio productions from BM are in my eyes „overproduced“ and pitchcorrected like 95% of the actual music. In the Live Shows, most in the last years the postproduction is lower. And the tonal development of Suzuka and Moa is huge. Most of the postproductions kill the transported emotions first. And both can sing now in a lower register. I‘m prefer the newer recordings. Be careful with Amuse (rightholder of BM), there are very protective. One of the best channel for DVD/BluRay Live Content is „For the Fox God“. All full copyright by Amuse, this is an „inofficial“ Amuse Channel.
Some BM fans get quite militant when it comes to live vs official music video (OMV.) I certainly agree wholeheartedly when it comes to live OVER OMV, and if you could only watch one or the other, always go with the live... but... no one is forcing you to watch ONLY one or the other. there is, to me, a short list of OMV that are definitely worth a watch: this one, Megitsune, Monochrome and Headbanger come to mind. (others may disagree with this list, but that is the nature of subjectivity) I believe they add context to the songs and were, to many fans, their first introduction either to BM in general or at least that particular song. If anything, watching OMV and then a live version underscores their amazing live performances and I don't think it detracts from the overall experience. Kitsune up! 🦊🤘
i think you will appreciate RATATATA more once you hear more of their stuff and then go back and hear it again! i suggest BxMxC next because Su-Metal Raps in it
Ratatata is a good song but definitely a bit overrated. Like you, I also prefer they sing in Japanese. Su's English is very good but I love the culture and how the Japanese language sounds.
I totally agree that BABYMETAL are better when they do their own music. When you are as amazing as BABYMETAL other acts can only drag you down because they are usually the worst part of the song. Exceptions are Road of Resistance and Metalli which are amazing because they still sound like BABYMETAL.
Great reaction but you have to watch kingslayer with Bring me the Horizon, they sing in English and Japanese, and it hits hard. watch it live, it's crazy good.

Babymetal has done a bunch of collabs with other bands. Those songs are good. Babymetal by themselves are always a 10/10!

Yet skipping the official video of Megitsune especially would be a darn shame.
First song I've listened to from BABYMETAL back at the time, amazing, still one of my favorite.

Great video mate, I appreciate the honesty!
I think you would also really enjoy their songs "Starlight" and "Mirror Mirror"!

good reaction LivinRoom-Metal, I highly recommend "From Dusk Till Dawn" Live at Budokan 2021, for an out-of-this-world experience.
